Description
This is Cernunnos, the Celtic "Horned God" of nature and fertility. He is born at the winter solstice, marries the goddess at Beltane, and dies at the summer solstice to be reborn next winter.Winter tree reference thanks to ~Hokota
I've always been fond of the look of these early winter evenings and all the mythologies that center around the winter solstice. Hope you enjoy as well, and happy winter!

Very nice!Β I like that you've used stag-type horns for him.Β I've seen him depicted with goat horns and that just seems wrong to me.Β And in my religion he is said to die on Halloween night (Samhian), not summer solstice, but perhaps it's different for different beliefs.

Thank you - yes the stag horns seem to be closest to the original depictions of him from two thousand years ago.

Thanks! I've never done such a decorated figure before, with all the jewelry and tattoos. But he really needed them to be Cernunnos.

Cernunnos, perhaps my favourite Celtic figure. Beautiful work!
Have you ever seen Robin of Sherwood, the Goldcrest tv production of 1983-1986. Thr horned god was very important in that series. One of my fave television programs of all time. Well, several decades, anyway.

Thanks, glad you like him! No I don't remember that show - I'm surprised an old Celtic god would figure prominently in what must have been Christian times? How did they work that in?

Many things can exist together. Not all people are christians, nor Celts, nor Wiccans, nor Buddhists, or Muslims, or atheists. They all exist at the same time in the same world and even in the same town.
Or even to some degree in the same person. I am a pantheistic Taoist, Zenian, and atheist of Celtic [Cymric/Welsh], and Norse ancestry with a touch of English and Lowland Scot for spice.

The things I believe/agree with tend to be consistent with each other, to form a coherent whole, but they are philosophies, outlooks, not religions. I don't believe in everything, though I do believe in some things and totally disbelieve others for which there is no evidence nor consistence with the reality I see around and in me every day.
