Mom and dad were both standing now, eyes wide open. Dad had one hand around mom’s side and the other in a subconsciously formed fist. Big bro was jumping up and down with both fists raised. They looked like they’d been stunned into breathlessness. I remembered to breathe myself.

I worked my elbow further under Jade’s chin and shoved her head forward while she thrashed and ripped at my chin. I squeezed tighter, go to sleep, go to sleep, go to sleep. Blood from Jade’s cheekbone smeared along my arm. The referee bent down close, monitoring Jade’s condition. A gurgling sound emanated from her throat as she tried to take in air through her constricted trachea. Her body began to go limp … carotid, check mate.
“Stop!” The ref jumped between us, grabbing my wrists to let up pressure. I rolled off and crouched, ready to keep fighting, just in case I had misunderstood.
