Description
Please click to full view. When I posted how I draw chibi-style , some asked me how I came up with the guidelines, as I had not been very specific there. I figured, since I needed to try out my new pen tablet anyway, I might as well show how I do it by drawing directly on the computer.
Poor Toby. He kind of looks like a rush job in the finished product. Also... he got awfully dissected, for all the world to see. He's definitely going to hate me.
You may ask, where did I pick up this stuff? I learned them by reading through those "How to Draw Manga" books, and also added in some of my own observations (I'd like to thank my college thesis for that hand... hahahaha!). It takes a bit of time to draw like this, but once I got the hang of it, it became faster. Sometimes I don't even use such detailed guidelines anymore, which goes to show that what one really needs is just practice, practice, and practice.
Before I leave, I would just like to reiterate: This is NOT a tutorial. It does not dictate "how you should draw" - it just shows my methods, and hopefully help someone along the way.

Can these guidelines apply to drawing females as well?

It should. You should just make the guidelines leaner, plus add a couple of circles (suction cups would actually be a better 3D analogy...) at the chest for breasts (the breast part is noted near the bottom of the pic).
Of course, the size of the circles depends on how big you want the breasts to be, but just make sure that the circles are built upwards from where the ball and the bitten-off part of the egg merge, and not from the shoulder blades downwards. Just don't make them too low - otherwise they sag.

Toby shouldn't be mad, he's got a nice body to show off *dreamy stare* I particularly like the bit of chest he's showing off. I love how you draw him.
Very nice guidelines, I always have trouble with the torso area especially when it comes to drawing men. I'm definitely going to give some of those techniques a try.

Wow...I usually just start with the outline right away. No wonder my characters sometimes seem dull.
This was a lot of help! Thanks!

When I saw the pointed ears and those eyes I wondered if it was Toby! This is great!
