That would make sense. After all, Celestia, for example, has yellow magic, and her cutie mark is the sun. Twilight has pink magic, her cutie mark is a pink star. Rarity has blue magic, and her cutie mark is a blue gem.

Well, for now, we can only assume that it is commonly a color found in the pony's cutie mark, as well as assuming she may have green in her cutie mark.

Actually, most situations the magic is the colour of their eyes. This works with Trixie, Twilight, Sweetie, Rarity and when transformed into unicorns, most of these ponies as well.

All other things being equal, magic color should match eye color with only a few exceptions.
(That was actually the first thing that clued me in that Cadence was an imposter...)

But Cadance's eye color is purple and her magic is blue. Shining's eyes are blue and his magic is pink. Celestia's eyes are pink and her magic is yellow.
Sorry, but you're off on this. The color of magic is matched up to the dominant color of the pony's cutie mark that isn't a grayscale color. Not their eyes. That applies accurately to Twilight and Rarity as well. When no non-grayscale color is available it seems to default to their mane color, as in Luna's case as well as Vinyl Scratch's.
So actually, you are right that Shy's magic color isn't right. But it should be pink, not teal.

I have also come to the conclusion magic is the colour of their eyes, at least in most situations. Twilight, Rarity, Trixie, Luna, Colgate, even Lyra. Some places their magic isn't even the colour of their cutie marks. And the lighter yellow in Celestia's cutie mark is not dominant, but somehow that is her magic's colour. So this proves either that it doesn't need to be dominant or that she's just an exception of the eye colour theory.
