Description Somewhere
in my rusty subterranean veins
a delicate path of hoofprints
blurs in the crosshairs of my squinting gaze.
A doe-eyed fawn
enamored with power and poetry
and the pale sprouting leafbuds on bare winter braches
walks with an tentative tread.
Come
cry the voices of sunlight streaming through powdered clouds
green leaves veined with red
wandering strains of melody
and the eyes sparkle and follow.
Then a great path intersects the virgin forest
and broadens
until a highway sprinkled with hypnotic marquee arrows
overcomes the stars with a fluorescent glare.
Eyes glaze and follow yellow double lines
spelled out with glassed-in flower petals.
It is only when the spotlights dim and flicker out
and the fawn is left among the once-gentle stars
that she whimpers and curls up, immobile,
trying to recall a fragment of a summer sky.
