Description
Why am I here? The soil at the spot
where I am standing
would not complain
if I suddenly crumbled
to dust.
The worms would not
turn their heads.
The blade of grass
pushing up through
the ground would have
no recollection
of my face.
If I fell
into a deeper hole
inside the earth
slowly
the soil would push
itself back into shape
and the endless burrowing
and changing would go on
above my head.
This world is indifferent.
I am not the last of my kind,
nor the first.
If I disappeared, the tiny
scar left by my lingering
presence
would soon be filled
by someone else and
I would be gone.
So why am I here?
