This is a bit different of a piece to show today, but it’s part of my skillset that I’ve used professionally for years and rarely get a chance to post on DA. I love calligraphy. Oh the wedding invitations I’ve inked over the years! This was an interesting project because I had to research the various hands in use in cartography in 1818 as well as get a great look to the ink, that fantastic India ink on vellum look that is just mesmerizing. I was greatly pleased to get a bit of watercolor look on here and thought the blue looked fantastic on a map. And of course the chance to design a compass rose, well who could pass it up? The map itself is of the route that the Murrell Expedition took to go from Little Horseshoe Bend in Tennessee all the way to Long Prairie in what was then the Arkansaw Territory. There are many adventures at the stops along the way in the book, but seeing just how many miles journey it was, with all the children and animals that were hauled along for the ride, well it’s truly incredible that they all made it.
