Description

I did this with the idea that I might get in something recognizably Santa Barbara in here, but life has intervened and I have a very non-recognizable place that barely exists in 3d space (I'm happy about the twistyness) and definitely exists in an odd color space.  Some days you just feel like the ocean is looming up over you waiting to crash.   The endless roar of the waves is threatening, comforting, mysterious, and full of life.  I don't have much to say today, so I'll let someone else do the talking:

Ah! what pleasant visions haunt me
As I gaze upon the sea!
All the old romantic legends,
All my dreams, come back to me.

Sails of silk and ropes of sandal,
  Such as gleam in ancient lore;
And the singing of the sailors,
And the answer from the shore!

Most of all, the Spanish ballad
Haunts me oft, and tarries long,
Of the noble Count Arnaldos
  And the sailor's mystic song.

Like the long waves on a sea-beach,
Where the sand as silver shines,
With a soft, monotonous cadence,
  Flow its unrhymed lyric lines;--

Telling how the Count Arnaldos,
With his hawk upon his hand,
Saw a fair and stately galley,
  Steering onward to the land;--

How he heard the ancient helmsman
Chant a song so wild and clear,
That the sailing sea-bird slowly
Poised upon the mast to hear,

Till his soul was full of longing,
And he cried, with impulse strong,--
"Helmsman! for the love of heaven,
Teach me, too, that wondrous song!"

"Wouldst thou,"--so the helmsman answered,
"Learn the secret of the sea?
Only those who brave its dangers
  Comprehend its mystery!"

In each sail that skims the horizon,
  In each landward-blowing breeze,
I behold that stately galley,
  Hear those mournful melodies;

Till my soul is full of longing
For the secret of the sea,
And the heart of the great ocean
Sends a thrilling pulse through me.

-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

WHO hath desired the Sea? - the sight of salt water unbounded -

The heave and the halt and the hurl and the crash of the comber wind-hounded?
The sleek-barrelled swell before storm, grey, foamless, enormous, and growing
Stark calm on the lap of the Line or the crazy-eyed hurricane blowing -
His Sea in no showing the same - his Sea and the same 'neath each showing:
His Sea as she slackens or thrills?
So and no otherwise - so and no otherwise - hillmen desire their Hills!

Rudyard Kipling

Kipling deserves much wider reading than he seems to get, and so does California boy Robinson Jeffers:

Unhappy about some far-off things

That are not my affair, wandering

Along the coast and up the lean ridges

I saw in the evening

The stars go over the lonely ocean,

And the black-maned wild boar

Plowing with his snout on Mal Paso Mountain.

That was the after bulkhead,

She's flooded from stem to stern.

Never seen death yet, Dickie?

Well now is the time to learn!

Only thing even vaguely nautical I could remember.  I thought "The Scottish lairds were right loathe, to wet their cork-heeled schoon" obscure even for me.  And don't get me started about The Ancient Mariner.  The old time sailors killed albatrosses with impunity and made tobacco pouches out of them.  I am still struggling with 'crackdest', this new learning amazes me!
