Trisyra stretched out and yawned widely, a high pitched whine escaping from her maw as she woke in the early morning light. She blinked slowly, gold and lavender colored orbs taking in the sight of the pastel sunrise in the distance. She licked her lips, her long warm tongue wiping away any traces of drool that could have possibly escaped while she had been sleeping. With a snort, she rested her head back down on the cool dirt beneath her. Donovan wasn’t up yet so she shouldn’t have to worry for five more minutes of delicious sleep.

Beside her, Kyoya rested with his back to hers. While he hadn’t cared for her attentions, the night had gotten fairly cold and he had been grateful for her warmth. Occasionally she would lick his ears or give him a seductive nibble which was surely distracting to the black bear marked Tokota male, but he found that if he paid her no mind, she would eventually turn her attention to one of the other males that were with them.

All in all, there were four Tokotas. Trisyra was the only female Tokota to be accounted for, much to the displeasure of all the males. She and her human tended to be more on the annoying side than anything else. Kyoya had partnered with Magnos, a long maned starter. He was a little prissy for him, but Kyo was sure that the male would help him get the job done. The last Tokota was Hellgate, a cranky older tawny male whose rider seemed to get along quite well with the other human. Kyoya hadn’t cared much at all for their late night ramblings or Donovan’s singing, but what could he do about it? Nothing but grin and bear it, at least for another few days.

Donovan finally woke, taking his weight off the soft underbelly that was Tris. She sat up and looked at him with her unique eyes that asked if they really had to get up. It wasn’t that she was a lazy beast, she just enjoyed being side by side with the black male she had become quite taken with. Of course, she became quite taken with any male that crossed her path, that’s how she had managed to get paired up with him in the first place. She hadn’t had much luck with Hellgate. He growled at her every step of the way if she dared to get too close and the gorgeous Magnos had ignored her advances completely, never even once looking in her direction. The silly girl had only wished to be noticed, but it was poor Kyo that had been cursed with looking her in the eye and giving a slight wag in the tail. Donovan was sure he had only meant to try and be friendly with her, they had encountered each other once before, but ever since they had traveled across the tundra together to test their fortitude, she had been completely and utterly taken with the bear marked male.

“Come on, I know you would like to snuggle him longer, but we have to get going if you guys plan on hunting today,” Donovan said as he stood up and brushed off his pants. Kyo seemed to understand exactly what the human had been referring to and quickly stood up, causing Tris to fall back a little. Alan, Hellgate’s handler, had laughed a bit as he packed up his things and began to work on getting his partner tacked up and ready to go. Tris snorted and glared at Donovan as she stood and looked him in the eyes. She was trying to be intimidating, but it’s hard to be scary when you are a female getting closer and closer to being in season without a male around that wants you. He gently patted her head and then began getting his things together before putting on her saddle and bridle and then leaving the cave.

Kyoya and Magnos took the lead. The black Tokota had been tracking for them the majority of the time as Donovan and Alan seemed more than content to talk to each other about their crazier moments, and of course Tris had no problem hanging back and enjoying the view before her. Donovan told the story of how he stole his personal favorite Tokota named Bunny and Alan answered with his own story of how he managed to finally get his own as well, after being threatened to never be able to own one. They laughed quietly among themselves while Tris tried to subtly bump into the gorgeous tawny next to her.

Hellgate wasn’t quite sure how to deal with this. He hadn’t received such blatant female attention before now and she was all about getting his attention at the moment. He preferred that she would just keep to herself and let him focus on tracking and making sure the other young Tokota was on the right trail. He didn’t trust a young one’s nose further than he could throw the beast the nose was attached to, even if there was a starter walking along side of him. He didn’t trust him either. This female however? He didn’t trust her, but she was beginning smell good in a way he hadn’t thought possible.

Kyoya and Magnos stopped at the same time. They had come up on a ridge and had suddenly frozen in place as they watched a herd of caribou grazing just below them. Despite Kyo being extremely good at calculating his odds, he had been following the scent of a bear, not an entire herd of caribou. Luckily for the group, they were all downwind from the herd, which gave them the upper hand. Donovan and Alan quickly dismounted and joined the trackers up on the ridge to see and assess the situation. They looked to each other and began talking in hushed whispers as Trisyra and Hellgate approached Kyo and Magnos.

“I know we were looking for some difficult prey, but caribou would cut this a lot shorter since they could all get in and hunt at once rather than us try and keep tracking that bear that has been a serious pain,” Donovan said. Alan furrowed his brow and seemed to be in deep thought for a few moments. These rites weren’t just about how to get the job done quickly and easily, but how they could prove themselves capable of providing for pups once they are able to breed. Settling for a common prey animal was something that seemed like an easy way out.

“I don’t know…” Alan finally replied.

“Well look at it this way. If we find that bear, it won’t stand a chance against three fully grown and mature Tokos. Depending on how they all fight, it won’t be a huge issue to take that bear down, even if he does end up being larger than them all. At least this way, they all can prove themselves rather than pulling together for one bigger kill.”

“This is true, but since the bears are starting to come out of their hibernation states they should be everywhere. It shouldn’t be that hard to find more than one bear, especially near the water. They should be gathering up for the rivers and streams to catch trout. Still too early for the salmon, but they will be after meat,” Alan offered.

“True…we still have a couple hours to this river here,” Donovan said as he pulled out the map and pointed. “Think we would have some luck today?”

“I would say luck will be on our side. I mean, it isn’t every day you come across a herd like this in the forest where they could be so easily ambushed. I take it as a good sign,” Alan replied confidently. With a nod, Donovan rolled up his map and stuck it back in his pouch and went to get on Tris, who had moved over to Kyo and was sitting right up next to the rather noticeably uncomfortable black Tokota.

“Come on crazy. We aren’t here for caribou. Not today,” he said as he patted her and mounted onto her back. Next to him, Alan was giving a similar speech to Hellgate, who seemed more than annoyed that they weren’t just going to get it over with. He grunted as Alan gave a gentle kick with his legs to urge the tawny forward to follow the sensual female and the other two Tokos. He looked back wistfully at the herd of caribou that had still taken no notice of the dangers so close to them. What a waste.

They traveled together for a few hours with no breaks as they made their way on the deer trails that would lead them to the river where bears would hopefully be fishing. It was getting close to midday by now and the sun was warm on their backs as they found a break from the trees. Kyo lifted his black muzzle and tasted the air, searching for any clues that a bear or bears may be close by. Magnos took his own route to scour the edges of the meadow for any tracks or scents as Tris and Hellgate were relieved from having to carry the weight of their riders.

With the saddles and bridles and packs off, Trisyra and Hellgate were allowed to roam and begin their hunt. They were close enough to the river that if any bears were around, the Tokos would surely find them, but not too close that Alan or Donovan would be caught in the middle of a fight should more than one show up at a time. This was a test for the Tokotas, not so much the handlers. They were there for moral support more than anything for this step along the way.

Kyo wasn’t going to bother wasting his time waiting on Trisyra or Hellgate to catch up. He had a scent that was promising and was going for it with or without them. Magnos seemed to approve and followed behind, understanding his role with helping the black, bear marked Tokota male. Trisyra resisted the temptation to follow the beautiful male, but only because the one thing she wanted more than him was the ability to breed and create her own pups to care for and show the ways of the world. The only way to really get his attention would be to earn her right to breed by getting her rites, and the only way to do that was to bring down a bear on her own. Hellgate, on the other hand, seemed to be reluctant to do anything past grumble about how they could have already been done with all of this had they just gone after the caribou.

Kyo was the first to find his bear. The giant brown bear was completely oblivious to anything that wasn’t his decent pile of trout he had pulled up on the bank. The black Tokota wasn’t impressed with the bear’s slurping and crunching messily on the fish he had caught. At least that bear was going to get one last good meal. With a glance at Magnos that was answered with a decisive nod, Kyo pulled back his lips and barred his teeth. With a carefully calculated leap, the Toko launched himself off the ground and onto the broad back of the grizzly before him. The bear had hardly any time to react before Kyo skillfully slipped around to the front, bringing the bear onto his forepaws due to the weight and also cutting off his air supply.

Despite the bear’s size, there wasn’t much the poor beast could do to try and shake the Toko from his neck. With the animal being just as big, if not bigger, and just as powerful, they were an easy match had the bear known what to expect. The surprise attack had been enough to cost the creature’s life as he struggled for air as he tried desperately to break the grip. The more he struggled, the deeper Kyo’s fangs sunk into his flesh, and eventually into his jugular. Blood loss and lack of oxygen soon brought the creature to the ground and gasping for his last breath. Magnos trotted up and assessed the damage done. The starter seemed quite pleased as he nodded and helped Kyo drag the carcass back to where Donovan and Alan were waiting.

Hellgate was surprisingly the next to find his bear. This one happened to be a male that was chasing after a mother bear’s cubs with the intent on killing them. This annoyed and angered the tawny, so he waited and positioned himself to ambush the relentless beast. With a leap, he crashed into the unsuspecting creature, knocking it to the ground and giving the cubs a chance to escape. The mother bear followed quickly after them, eager to get them away from the one creature that the bears feared above even men. The giant male turned, eyes glaring as he faced off with his aggressor. Hellgate narrowed his eyes and let a deep growl escape his chest as he waited for the enraged monster to attack.

As he had predicted, the male was too angry to think straight thoughts or how to calculate an attack. He rushed towards Hellgate fueled on nothing but hate and blind fury. Using brute force, Hellgate rammed into the beast, knocking it backwards and stunning it at the same time. The blow had cost Hellgate a bit as he knew he would be sore in the shoulder later that day, but it gave him the opportunity to avoid claws as he went in to rip out the throat of the bellowing bear. He was licking his bloody chops and paws when Trisyra happened to pass him.

“Really? You too?” she pouted. She had seen Kyo and Magnos pulling a bear not that long ago and now she was seeing that Hellgate had made quick and messy work of his own kill.

“You’re losing daylight. Better get on it. There was a mother bear with a couple of cubs that ran that way. If you are lucky, you might catch up with them. They had been dealing with this guy before I showed up and saved the day,” Hellgate gave a wicked grin. For a moment, the rusty brown female was thrown off by how gorgeous and sinister he looked all at the same time, but then the thought of taking a mother from her young when they were so dependent on her made her sick.

“I think I would rather find another bear to hunt. I shouldn’t have to fight some weakened creature to prove myself,” she shot back and flicked her tail. She knew she affected him with her scent when he froze and a glassy look came over his eyes. That would occupy him for a bit, she thought as she went closer to the river bank.

She did see the mother bear in the water trying to catch fish as her cubs played together on the bank. Unfortunately, she didn’t see any other bears at all for as far as she could see. She really didn’t want to have to travel any further than she had to if she could help it. Bears were big and heavy and rather hard to move from place to place, but she didn’t want to destroy a family for the sake of earning her right to create her own. She couldn’t bear the thought of the cubs losing their mother to something they would consider a monster, it completely broke her heart. She was about to turn away when she heard a desperate roar. Trisyra looked up and saw a huge grizzly coming out of the brush and taking a large paw to swipe at the defenseless cubs as their mother desperately tried to swim back to them.

Today just wasn’t her day, Trisyra thought to herself towards the crying mother as she helplessly watched one of her cubs get flung into the flowing river. The rusty Tokota took action and dove into the icy water, grabbing the cub and pulling it up and onto the bank. It gurgled and coughed, but she was sure it would be okay. For now, she had to save the other. She barely turned around to face the giant when she felt a giant clawed paw connect to her head. She was knocked completely senseless as she felt the beast begin to tear into her.

Desperate, Tris rolled over and plunged into the water. She let the current take her down a bit before she pulled herself out and shook, getting her senses back in time to face the raging beast that was quickly approaching. She dodged his initial attack, which was to swat at her again. This left him open on the right side and allowed for her to attack at his neck, the one place she knew she needed to take him out at so she could bring him down before he did the same to her. Unfortunately, she hadn’t been able to get a good grip on him and was thrown against a nearby tree as he shook her off. The breath was knocked out of her, but she could see as he turned his attention back to the young mother and her cubs. The one that had been thrown into the river was struggling to get its bearings and the mother was set on protecting it at all costs.

Tris wasn’t about to let the male make a meal of the cubs, so she stood and lunged at him despite being dizzy and out of breath. Was it reckless? Yes, and she knew that, but there was nothing she wouldn’t do to save young, it was just who she was. She jumped onto his back and grabbed on as tightly as she could as he stood to his full height and tried to reach around to pull her off. She pulled a similar move to Kyo, only this time she had to try and run up his back with her rear legs to get the momentum to swing around and rip at his throat. As soon as her teeth made contact, she bit as hard as she could, crushing his throat and tearing it away. It was a messy job and not her best work, but the task was done. The mother and her babies were safe, and that was all that mattered.

Trisyra looked up and made eye contact with the female bear. There was a moment of gratitude in her eyes before she decided to move away from such a dangerous place. She was sure that the mother bear had no idea she would have faced two aggressive males and two Tokotas that had saved her and her young twice in one day. With a sigh, Tris laid down next to her kill. She was sore and her head hurt from where she had been hit earlier, but she was satisfied and it only made her feel more empowered when they compared the sizes of the bears and found that she had fought the largest, even if only by a little bit.

With their heads held high, the Tokotas and their handlers headed back to their camp to get some much needed rest after a day of tackling bears.
