Description
Title says it all. I want to know how to shade this properly without getting rid of the smoke that is drifting from its maw. I plan on giving it color, as the dragon is looking down on something that is on fire, so I'll probably give the picture a reddish or bluish cast to it.Any advice/opinions? All are greatly appreciated.
On an off note - I know the scales are kind of dark and ugly, but I'ma fade them out a bit and sort of blend them together so they're not so repetitive.
Hopefully I can get this done ASAP. It's a gift for my soon to be brother-in-law.

Are you going to give the actual dragon colour?

I'm not entirely sure yet - it depends on how the shading looks once I somewhat complete it. Like, if it needs color to show more emphasis or something, then I may end up doing so. I'm positive I will add a red lighting to the dragon, though.

You're better off choosing one or the other- a mixture of pencil shading and coloured pencil is best used when you want to isolate a particular part of a drawing. What I would say is if you do decide to pencil shade the dragon, going over it in colour will just turn out messy- I would go for just pencil shading it until you have the confidence to take your shading knowledge into colour. As for the actual shading, try being more adventurous- go bold, take a thick pencil (2B+) and work into the corners of the horns and flicks of the scales to give each bit an impression and character. Some other things that could help you are, depending on what effect you want to create, using a tissue to blend the pencil in smoothly after you've roughed it out, and going over some areas with a rubber to highlight them. I hope I helped

Wow. I feel very.. enlightened.
I will be sure to take all that into consideration. I'll probably just stick to pencil shading it light of that.
Thanks so much for your help!
