Description Previous part to this story:

Next part:

Soorn wrung his lower arms and switched his bushy tail nervously as he sat in the family room of the medical facility.  A glass of cool green liquid sat untouched on the small table beside him.  A young refreshment boy had brought it to him earlier but he didn't feel much like drinking it.  Smoke and industrial fumes permeated his clothes and hair.  The strange metallic-smelling blood that stained his shirt and all four arms was beginning to darken.  He looked as though he had been on the wrong end of a Konian fireworks festival, and he smelled like it too.  He had been tempted to dip in the shallow complementary pool in the center of the room, but he knew all he would end up doing was contaminating the water.  And he was too polite to do that.

He didn't know how long he had been waiting but it seemed like a lifetime since he had found the crashed ship and it's sole, injured passenger.  It was fortunate that he had brought his com into the field that morning and was able to call for and emergency medical teleport.  The moment he had materialized on the arrival platform the medical technicians had taken the limp, bleeding alien from his arms and whisked the young creature away.  He had heard virtually nothing since.

He could have just gone home, taken a skimmer back to Nool and forgot all about the incident.  After all the alien wasn't family, it wasn't even his species.  But somehow he couldn't.  He kept seeing that pale little face in his mind.  Perhaps it was instinct.  Jssfloon males and most especially Third children seemed to have a strong nurturing desire.  Or maybe he felt responsible because he was the one who had discovered the crash.  One way or another Soorn couldn't bring himself to leave until he knew the fate of the child.

A medical assistant entered the room and Soorn quickly stood.  She approached him almost gingerly, her curly lavender tail stiff with discomfort.  She didn't want to talk to a Third, especially one that looked and smelled as badly as this one, but duty and politeness overruled her distaste.

Soorn's tail switched intently behind him.  "Is it alive?"  He would not at all be surprised if it wasn't.  He had never in all his life seen a creature in such a condition.

She let out an almost imperceptible chuffing sound.  Soorn had ignored any kind of greeting...rude.  "Presently."  She answered.  "The technitions are doing all they can.  But performing any kind of procedure on an unfamiliar species is...unpredictable.  And the injuries are extensive."

"Can you help it?"

" 'It' is a 'he'."  She said with a large flick of her tail.  "And I'm afraid there a some things we could not manage.  We are in the process of replacing ribs and an arm."

Soorn felt his soul spots flush purple in sympathy.  "His arm will grow back, though."  He stated hopefully.

The assistant narrowed her eyes in an expression that was not entirely impolite but clearly told him that she thought he was disgustingly ignorant.  "Not all species have that ability."

He felt his tongue twist around itself.  "He's young, isn't he?"

"He appears to be quite young, yes.  They can't be certain, of course, but they don't believe it has even reached it's first metamorphasis."

He nodded.  Somehow Soorn had guessed that.  "Have they been able to contact his family?"

She flicked her tail in what might have been frustration.  "His origins are still a mystery.  We can't contact what we don't know."

Soorn's double eyebrows lowered.  "They still don't know what he is?"  This surprised him.  Being a farmer and a Third with very little education Soorn had assumed it had been simple ignorance that he had not been able to identify the creature and vessel that had crashed in his field.  He had thought surely someone else would know.

The assistant looked puzzled as well.  "The species is not in any of our databases.  Nothing like him has ever been recorded visiting Jssfloon.  She looked down, curiously examining the info padd in her upper hand.  "We even contacted the Drek.  Even with their extensive exploration fleets they have never encountered one."

Soorn's mouth straightened seriously.  "So he has no one."  The Drek knew every sentient species for several hundred lightyears in every direction, even the minor moon colonies.  If they didn't know about this little creature, where could he possibly have come from?  And why was he alone so very far from his home?

She let out a frustrated chuff through her nostril slits.  This was clearly bothering her a well.  "Perhaps if he wakes up he can tell us where he belongs.  Then we will have something to go on."

"I hope so."

The assistant watched him curiously for a moment.  "You can go home if you like.  We appriciate your actions but there is nothing you can do now. The facility will see to the alien."

Soorn deliberately sat back in his cushioned chair, letting her know that he had no intention of going anywhere.  Now that he knew the creature was all alone he was even more determined to somehow help him.  "I would like to stay.  I would be grateful if you would be kind enough to inform me when I'm allowed to see him."

She gave a small nod.  "As you wish."  She turned to leave but stopped in the doorway.  "Perhaps you would enjoy the lagoon across the square you wait.  It is self-cleaning."

She had managed to efficiantly insult him while managing to sound helpful.  But he didn't mind.  Perhaps he would make use of the lagoon.  They would never let him into a sanitary patient room smelling the way he did, and Soorn wanted to be there when the alien woke up.  He really hoped he would wake up.

----
I honestly didn't have any intention of contiuing this.....but it kind of just happened.  I kind of like Soorn and wanted to do just a bit more with him.  Gave me a chance to draw some more Jssfloon.

I know, right? They most likely would have dealt with this kind of thing already if there were more Thirds. But there are so few that no one thinks of it as a social problem. Just...yep, they are useless and smell funny so avoid them.

It certainly seems that way. They are pretty good at keep records of the different species that visit Jssfloon. But they can't come up with anything even remotely like Rover.

Nice picture remember that Rover (in your picture about his Ages) that you tells his arm was being replaced by robot part, poor little, but I suppose it is to save his life. Soorn is a great alien, ok, he was dirty but he had a good reason, What is the problem he is a third? It's a classification? Oh well I appreciate that Soorn get worried for someone that he doesn't know.

chill13 In reply to Danish-Rose-DRTC [2015-05-17 22:59:54 +0000 UTC]

Yeah.  He was pretty young when it happened.  Of course, since he doesn't remember having a real arm it doesn't really bother him that his new one is mechanical.

Good question about Thirds.  Most Jssfloon can only have two children.  It's just part of their biology.  That being the case it's VERY imortant for the survival of their species that EVERYONE get married and have those two children.  On rare occasions, though a mutated gene can cause a female to have a third child.  But Thirds are always sterile, which means to a society that revolves around children and family that they are virtually useless.  They usually aren't given good jobs because an employer would rather pay someone who does or will have a family of their own.  Thirds usually end up as caretakers of their sibling's children or in jobs that no one else wants.
Jssfloon also have scent glands under their jaw that gives off an identifying smell that is unique to each individual.  It can tell what their gender is, how old they are, whether or not they have children..ect.  Thirds don't have those scent glands and that too makes others very uncomfortable around them.

Ok,I understand better. Thanks for the explanation. Well society's rules. Poor guys, they aren't blamed by a third ( it's nice that in my country doesn't have this kind of rules I'll will be in problems).

I suppose that almost nobody get worried by a little homeless alien boy, and Soorn understand it well. He's a great alien guy

I want to read more about them. Blessings

You are welcome. I should really have an information page of this along with the Jssfloon species sheet. It really is a bad spot to be in on their planet. (Yeah, good thing I don't know of any cultures like that).

Soorn is one in a million. The other Jssfloon do want him to get better but none of them are willing to take in an alien child. Soorn doesn't just care about his health. He cares about his future.

Yes. With Rover there Soorn has someone to talk to and to carry on for him even through he didn't really have any kids of his own. This is the next part of this story.

With each new segment you put out, the more I get sucked into the universe you've created.  I just want to hug Soorn.  He sounds like an excellent person.

I just want to scoop up all the Thirds and sweep them away to people who would appreciate them.  I can just imagine them being the best daycare workers and babysitters.  Or maybe even teachers for the young!  And how about pediatric doctors?    They just need education and people who realize they have value.

Oh my, I just wondered how Jsslfoon would react to meeting a bunch of humans?  XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to KatysCornerTx [2015-01-22 02:35:30 +0000 UTC]

He is a really nice guy.

Thirds seem to have a special empathy for others and especially children that firsts and seconds just don't appear to feel as strongly. They are usually 'caretakers' for children, usually those of their own family, or end up getting jobs too dangerous for other people...if their family doesn't want them around. They would make the best pediatric doctors if they were given the chance. But important, high-paying jobs are always given to those who can or will be able to have a family to support. Those who can have children are simply considered more important. They also do not have the identifiying scent glands and that makes other Jssfloon uneasy around them.

If a ship of humans just appeared on Jssfloon it probably wouldn't phase them a bit. It is a vacation planet so they get new species all the time.

It's neat to see more Jssfloon. If/When you do at least the next part of this story, I'd be ready for it. It's also an interesting concept on the "thirds". Dose the same apply to female Jssfloon thirds?
A side question though: is the "y" in Flyspur pronounced like a long or short 'i'?
Just from a purely technical side, you mention the Drek knowing species from a good 'hundred light-years' away (which might seem a little smallish to me, being only 0.1% or less the width of our galaxy, but guess it depends on the scope of the story, and the richness of species here), was kinda wondering if you ever thought of the location of all this, which might kinda relate to a potential map.
I'm very much enjoying your creativeness! C:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to John-AM [2015-01-20 03:10:03 +0000 UTC]

It hopefully won't be too long.
Yes.  It does apply to female Thirds as well.  Although, for unknown reasons most Thirds are male.  So if seeing a Third is unusual seeing a female Third is almost unheard of.

It's a short 'i'.  Rhymes with whisper.

Mm. Perhaps you are right.  Maybe I should widen that a bit.

Ah, but a map might very well give things away.

True, though I also said "potential" map, so maybe after you reveal the climax to this curiously colorful chronicle. Merely inquiring out of curiosity if you did have a location thought out, but not for you to reveal it.

I like Soorn! I would be happy to see and read more with him.

Another very well done character of yours. You're so good at all that stuff (developing unique and interesting characters of diverse and well-rounded and plausible personalities & backgrounds, with realistic level of both skills and weaknesses - quirks and tropes, and further expressing this through both visual character design and their written scenes that often accompany those pictures); I just hope that when I finally manage to get my characters and ideas out there, they will be even half as well-received/enjoyed as yours.

(Lol, no matter how much I personally love my characters they're like my personal imaginary bestfriends slash mind-children and I relate and connect to them as well if not better that real flesh-and-blood people most the time, I still always feel insecure and like they're so boring compared to everybody else's characters, or just that nobody but me will attach to them... and that fear keeps me from sharing, haha. That fear of rejection or just disinterest/apathy is a huge obstacle. I shoot myself in the foot that way of course: I worry that nobody will like my ideas/characters, and so I don't share them; but then by not sharing, OF COURSE nobody connects to them because there's nothing out there for them to connect to... So I have to break that cycle somehow... )

He's actually a pretty important part of Rover's young life. Aw. Thank you so very much! I just enjoy making characters!

Well, I never NEVER expected my Hi Ho Hyperdrive story to be of interest at all. It was just a silly idea and i decided to share. And I CERTAINLY never expected it to be popular enough to get fan art. So I guess all you can do is try. Love your characters and keep drawing them and writing about them. You love them and that's whats most important but you never know how much others will like them until you show them.
