This is the stuff I use when I make my snowflakes: paper, pencil, eraser, compass, carbon paper, radius guide/360° protractor, straight ruler, circle template, metal erasing guide, drafting lettering guide (I use it as another ruler), and my Veritas carving knife with the No. 15 shaped blade. Sometimes a few other exotic shape templates come into play. I usually use a flattened cereal box as a cutting mat.Related content

It's Christmas Eve and the kids and Dad are playing with a ream of paper. Frustration level is growing, "Mom, you have to ask her...." So here I am. How many times do you fold the paper to come out with a six points? Eight and four are easy. Do you fold the paper in half, trace, then let your design lay half way on the remaining quarter? Good gravey this is hard to ask via words and not picture.

...Okay, let's see if I can explain this. Fold the paper in half once like usual. Then, instead of folding it in half again at a 90° angle, you need to fold the two outer thirds up at 60° to overlap in the middle. Kind of like how you'd fold an A4 sheet of paper into thirds to get it to fit into a 'normal' envelope. A quick search turned up this website , which has nice diagrams illustrating how to do it. I use a protractor to mark off the angles; makes it easier to get the folds in the right place on the first try.

An erasing guide? I've never even heard of one but they sound very useful. It all looks too complex for me

The erasing guide is the silver metal thing. I have no real idea how it's really supposed to be used, so it's just another ruler at the moment.

You put it on your drawing, whichever shape you need placed in the right spot, and you erase through one of those little shapes. It helps make a precise erasure while protecting the rest of the drawing. Kinda cool.

Yeah, I know. I've only ever used the edge of it as a guide for erasing things. It likes to shred some of my erasers. Maybe in drafting I'd use the wacky shapes, but all of my drafting work is done on computer, where Ctrl+z is my friend.

I've heard they're good with the electric eraser things, but I don't have one of those, so I've no idea. I guess they're most useful for traditional drafting, but they're kind of handy for laying down precise little shapes with pencil and stuff, too.

I wasn't aware of its existence either until three years ago. My high school drafting teacher gave me a bunch of stuff at the end of the school year, and that was one thing. All the orange rulers and the clear plastic lettering guide were some other goodies.
