Dude, the hat was a necessity. Without that hat, the robot would not exist. I'm pretty sure his creator built the hat and was like, hey, this would look pretty neat with a robot attached to it.
So yes, if you're looking to build him, start with the hat fo sho. Also, could you make him my sex slave? That would be great.
