Description Being a mixed traffic locomotive, alike to all of her sisters in the Black Five family, 44871 features driving wheels that are larger than those of a freight loco, but smaller than those of an express passenger loco. Black Five drivers stand at 72 inches/1.829m tall, with 6 such wheels connected and driven via either a Stephenson, Capriotti or the more common Walschearts valve gear, and the associated coupling rods and eccentric cranks and rods. The locomotives of this type were known in public service to have achieved speeds of up to 90mph, however in preservation the Black Five is limited to a more sedate 60mph. They are old and it's a decent retirement for them, but they still love to work their asses off when they want to.
