Description
acrylic on canvas, .3X.4mI am still struggling with the concept of Equanimity.[And painting!LOL] It is an important part of the Hindu psyche.I did one on this theme a few days back. [link] This is another.
I am reproducing the explanation below from the earlier one.
One of the - or THE- most important Hindu spiritual text - Bhagavad-Gita advocates equanimity. That one should treat both pain and pleasure without getting involved.Detachment or equanimity is the way to go through life.
Story goes that God narrated and 'revealed' this doctrine on an epic battlefield to a prince-warrior who wanted to renounce the world rather than go through the war.....

I'm not entirely familiar with the concept of equanimity, but your explanation seems to clarify the intent of this piece.
Without reading your description, I thought that you were showing extreme contrasts within a very short difference. The beautiful sky and the polluted-looking rest occupy the same general area around this bridge, which looks like a certain landmark.
After reading, and keeping that bridge in mind, I began to view this as commentary on the equanimity of industrialization/modernization. There's this structure linking land, for human convenience, and it's in this area that was likely as pretty as the sky hints til humans came in and mucked it up. Both beauty and ugliness exist in the same place, and you don't favor either side of it, as though it's an indifferent sort of outlook.
This is possibly one of the (even) more intriguing works from you.

thank you very much indeed for the detailed comment
this is a quite new and valid interpretation
indifference comes dangerously close to the concept of equanimity
but while
equanimity, in the Indian thought, is used more to describe a quality of seers and sages, who have gone beyond the dualism of good-evil, pleasure pain - let us say - an enlightened indifference to the mundaneity of life
indifference is , on the other hand, when you can do something but prefer to turn a blind eye, like we may say elites are indifferent to the plight of the deprived.
but practically, emulating the 'wise' in all their 'enlightened' equanimity HAS meant social apathy.
That is why I am struggling with this concept.

Wwow, Your gallery is beutifull, I think this one is my favorit. You paint so well I love how the bridge seems to drip into the fog. Wonderful!

thank you very much indeed
by the way, you are the only one to make out it to be 'fog'!
At last I seem to have succeeded.
Please DO leave comments on any other pieces you like, find worth commenting upon, will really appreciate it
thanks again

the first thing i though was "oh that bridge is drowning!"... but then that yellow, green in front of the bridge reminded me to mmmm (damn it i want my dictionary)... let's see... a field with "wheat" (i used an online translator)... dancing with the wind, reminding of nature and suddenly distracting you from the structured and cold and always distant life of the city... like if that bridge, though it's so strong with that red colour, can be anyways "erased" by that growing nature in front of it...
i don't know, it gave me that impression...

This is quite a new interpretation, I guess it may hold

This seem so opposite the idea of equinamity as I understand it.
The red, the highs and lows, and angle of the bridge...the background and foreground texture, seem turbulent too....
all of it is tension...controled tension...but its felt, none the less.
Is this a concept you feel you would like to achieve in yourself....or simply understand?
I suppose I'm in an invasive and inquisitive mood tonight.
Perhaps equinamity can bring some amount of contentment.....
just rambling.
ummm...I like the painting. like it or not...its asthectically pleasing. I always like your use of red and blue.

thanks for liking the painting
I think I understand the concept quite ok though I am not sure if it is worth pursuing as a goal. So, if the tension shows, I would say it is between the concept and me, rather than concept per se.I am glad that it conveys controlled tension though.

I have been watching as your art develops and progresses and it is pleasing to see this. Good control of shaping and form! Shadows and highlights read really well. There is a slight problem, I think, with the perspective angle in the second pillar of the bridge...maybe not....in studying it it feels as if something not quite right. It has a great semi abstract feel to it that I like a lot.

does it look to be tilting slightly to the right?

Do you know, I am not completely sure. I think, yes, the pillar may need to be turned a slight bit clockwise.....maybe?

ok
I am looking at the original just now, and it looks alright really!
LOL
Thanks for such considerable input though
you know, all this is instinctive for me - form, shape, perspective, colour balance....

i'm sorry, but maybe it is just me... i don't understand how the bridge advocates equanimity.... maybe i am just not seeing the piece as it should be seen. i did study hinduism last year though and i'm glad i did because i knew what the Bhagavad-Gita was and also what equanimity was. being educated does wonders for the soul. anyway, maybe you could explain how your theme relates to this painting? i'm just confused...

Interesting... I have recently been attending a hare-krisha temple here, and I am currently reading the Bhagavad-Gita. I like the concept here, darkness below the fog, bright skies above, and the gray area in between. The lower area almost looks like fire, which would be a different kind of symbolism entirely
The sky looks great too, from a technical standpoint.
Great work man!

so you chose a symbol of the bridge because its something that is passed on and not stayed on. Showing a bridge can be a symbol and a message of a spiritual belief.
Without your discription i dont think i would care for this much, but your explanation really brought life to it for me. I do think its missing another element. Maybe a sign out of the water point a bit toward the bridge saying "no stopping" and then maybe to draw it into a spirital context, a man indian style sitting on the top, with a book in his hand and a finger in the air as if to say he is preaching. Anyhow just my thoughts.

well, I didn't have the bridge as a symbol, as you see it.Though , of course, it can be seen that way.

Its a great depiction ofrcorse, your artistic display is wonderful, sorry if i gave you the impression otherwise. But you know im an "emotional" artist. For me, its all about trying to understand peoples emotions through life. And man made things just dont captivate me and make me feel. but I STILL LIKE YOU! hug hug
