A student with a sturdy pocket can save enough money for a face, but it costs more than that to feel human again. I am gaunt with the effort it takes the air that a soul fills up to push a propeller to light the homes and fill the kitchens of the ones who can afford skin and stomach.
I can’t afford my own hands. The thin paper check sets like a bed beneath me stamped with the donation fee they charged when they took me away.
They called it a soul, they called my body a burden, I paid them to take it away.
