Description Watch out, it's a big file!

Also see how to color fleece eyes to go on your hat. --> [link]
How to replace the band with ear-flaps! --> [link]
And how to sew on ears! --> [link]

Pattern: also notes the size of the rectangle
NOTE: pattern includes a 1/4" or .6cm seam allowance. That means sew that far from the edge.

If you are one of the many people only familiar with the metric system, I'm sorry I didn't include those measurements but here is a wonderful conversion tool. --> [link]

Alright you've been waiting for it so here it is. Firstly I'd like to state that this was a big pain to make. I have no idea how others can stand to make these.

Now this is just a basic hat so you can embellish it however you want. Please don't ask me how to make anything specific; either you'll have to figure it out or buy it from me.

Please don't post this anywhere, kindly leave a link instead.
Tutorial (c) me, Clearkid - For the glory of God!

Edit: OK, so I've had several people express confusion on the last step. I will attempt to clarify it here:

First sew the short edges of the band together, forming a loop. Then fold it the long way with the seam inside so you have a double thick loop. Take your main hat part and turn it inside out with the seams facing out. Turn the hat upside-down like a bowl! Now, take your double thick band with it's two raw edges facing up, and place it INSIDE the hat so that those two edges line up the the edge of the hat. Pin it together starting with the seam of the loop lined up with the back seam of you hat. Then fold it in half and pin the front, and then the sides and in-between. Then you're going to sew the tree layers together at the top. When you've finished, take out your pins and fold the brim down, and turn the hat right-side-out again to finish.

Now, that's the detailed explaination. In essence, all you're really doing in the last step, is sewing the brim to the bottom of the hat in a way that hides the seam on the inside. Hope it helps guys! If you still have questions, feel free to post them here.

And one last thing. If you make a hat, I'd love to see it. You can post your links here. :3

Does it work with felt?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

clearkid In reply to Mousetalon [2009-12-25 16:22:03 +0000 UTC]

Not really, because felt doesn't stretch around your head. It -can- be done, but you're going to have a harder time getting the perfect fit. And you can't wash felt at all.

THAK YOU! This makes my hat making a lot easier. Doing the band was always a bitch for me cause I was sewing it on as the strip, and not the sewn together circle.

'don't let your kitty sit on your work'..that may be the hardest part of this project..they LOVE to lay on nice, clean fabric.

Apparently, it IS possible to sew hats to hair!
My twin was very happy with her new hat - not so much having it sewn into her hair.
Well, I ASKED IF SHE WOULD MIND IF I USED HER HEAD AS A TABLE.
Thanks for the tut! <3

Thanks

Love this. Going to try this. One question though I have. Does this pattern do one size fits all or do you have to change pattern slightly for bigger head. And any way to have band on hat plus the ears.

I used your tutorial to make my Masquerain hat (which i started over 2 years ago and still haven't finished, urgh), but it didn't turn out very good. >.< of course, mine was hand-sewn... and made of felt... and i didn't measure my giant head beforehand to make sure it would fit... >.>

i'm going to try again soon when i get some fabric so i can try to make a Dunsparce hat. <3

yooligurl In reply to ??? [2009-10-23 01:52:21 +0000 UTC]

umm....i have two questions,
one, i don't get the last step...still...
and two, how do you make it so that the fabric that is sticking out doesn't show? do u need like another layer inside?

THANKS SO MUCH!! this will help me when i try to make one!! XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

clearkid In reply to yooligurl [2011-06-04 18:03:22 +0000 UTC]

Try the last step and you'll get it.
the inside seams are against your head where you don't see them. I usually trim mine down to a neat 1/4" but if they really bother you you can make a second top and sew it inside showing no seams, making it twice as thick and reversible.

about how long does it take you to make one hat?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

clearkid In reply to SandSibilings [2011-06-04 17:56:35 +0000 UTC]

A basic hat with nothing on it, 30min. A designed one, 2-6 hours, depending on the complexity.
