Description Watch out, it's a big file!

Also see how to color fleece eyes to go on your hat. --> [link]
How to replace the band with ear-flaps! --> [link]
And how to sew on ears! --> [link]

Pattern: also notes the size of the rectangle
NOTE: pattern includes a 1/4" or .6cm seam allowance. That means sew that far from the edge.

If you are one of the many people only familiar with the metric system, I'm sorry I didn't include those measurements but here is a wonderful conversion tool. --> [link]

Alright you've been waiting for it so here it is. Firstly I'd like to state that this was a big pain to make. I have no idea how others can stand to make these.

Now this is just a basic hat so you can embellish it however you want. Please don't ask me how to make anything specific; either you'll have to figure it out or buy it from me.

Please don't post this anywhere, kindly leave a link instead.
Tutorial (c) me, Clearkid - For the glory of God!

Edit: OK, so I've had several people express confusion on the last step. I will attempt to clarify it here:

First sew the short edges of the band together, forming a loop. Then fold it the long way with the seam inside so you have a double thick loop. Take your main hat part and turn it inside out with the seams facing out. Turn the hat upside-down like a bowl! Now, take your double thick band with it's two raw edges facing up, and place it INSIDE the hat so that those two edges line up the the edge of the hat. Pin it together starting with the seam of the loop lined up with the back seam of you hat. Then fold it in half and pin the front, and then the sides and in-between. Then you're going to sew the tree layers together at the top. When you've finished, take out your pins and fold the brim down, and turn the hat right-side-out again to finish.

Now, that's the detailed explaination. In essence, all you're really doing in the last step, is sewing the brim to the bottom of the hat in a way that hides the seam on the inside. Hope it helps guys! If you still have questions, feel free to post them here.

And one last thing. If you make a hat, I'd love to see it. You can post your links here. :3

euhm... actualy...
you say when sewing, you need the good sides on the inside.
but, does fleece have a good or bad side? o_o'
cuz they look the same for me XP

It depends on the kind of fleece. I have some anti-pill fleece which is kind of fuzzy on one side and sometimes when you get patterned fleece the picture is clearer on one side. Otherwise it really doesn't matter.

So, I was FINALLY able to go to the craft store and buy some fleece to make ssome snazztastic hats!
Before I start, though, I have a question. My head it about 24" around, which I've found makes my head is a bit bigger than average. (I have a hard time finding non-stretchy hats that fit. :s) I know fleece stretches, but do I need to adjust the pattern size any?

Thx!

clearkid In reply to MCRizLIFE [2009-07-03 03:32:00 +0000 UTC]

If you cut the band the right size it'll fit, no need to resize the pattern.
Good luck!

is the cat tail required in making the hat? Would a dog tail work? Does it matter what color of cat?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

clearkid In reply to RavynCrescent [2009-07-02 04:07:00 +0000 UTC]

Actually the cat tail was a last minute substitution. I find a pony tail or pig tails work best. Color is personal preference.

Hey~ Great tut, definitely going to make one!
One thing I'm confused about...the pattern that says 3 1/2" x head distance?
Does that mean like...3 times the distance around my head or something XD *ish dumb* D:
Also, are the quarters one-size-fits-all sort of deal or should I alter them by about an inch? (I have a huge head. 24 inches around, lol)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

clearkid In reply to fruitytoenail [2009-06-23 05:01:08 +0000 UTC]

It means three and a half inches wide by your head distance long. And the triangles should fit any, except like an infant.

This tutorial is great, really clear and easy to understand!
I've been talked into making a Jumpluff hat for my friend, I don't suppose you have any suggestions for making/attaching giant pompoms to a hat do you? Dx

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

clearkid In reply to Neriad [2009-06-17 05:20:41 +0000 UTC]

Please excuse me but, LOL! xD Jumpluff hasn't been requested of me, but that's about the point I'd ask them what they'd like instead. Honestly though, if you really want to do it you'll have to get a little creative. I'd go for some opalescent ribbon, wrap it around a book, cut it into many strips and tie it together to get the pompoms. Then wire them to the hat and sheath the wire in some green fabric.
Anyway, good luck, and if you manage to pull it off you'll have to send me pictures!
