Alternate Title: This Is Literally My Favorite Painting Out Of All Of My Paintings Holy Cow Why Don't I Paint More Often I Feel So Proud Of Myself And That My Friends Is 1. Unusual And 2. Really Rad To FeelDA wouldn't let me type that title into the actual title-bar because it's 'too long' or some Jazz like that. Scoff scoff.
Inspired by a few scenes from the constant Gravity Falls role-plays and I have been having. It started off with regular ol' Gravity Falls, but then we were like: "Hey, let's have an RP where Stanford and Fiddleford are still young dork nerds working on science-y stuff." and then from there it escalated into "Bill tricks Fiddleford into thinking that he's totally cool and nice and not planning anything horrible" and then to "Bill accidentally hospitalizes Ford because Fiddleford accused Bill of hurting Stanford by possessing him (which he was) so Bill tried to turn it into "whaaaaat? Noooo way, he's totally taking drugs--let's give him a drug test!" so then Bill gave Fiddleford some "medicine" that would "knock out Stanford" and well whatdyaknow Stanford went to the hospital and almost died and now he's blind because he got flipping brain damage from flipping Bill and the best part is that Bill legitimately did not expect this to happen BECAUSE BILL FORGOT THAT HUMANS ARE FRAGILE BEINGS SO NOW FIDDLEFORD IS MAD AT HIM AND STANFORD IS HAVING AN EMOTIONAL BREAKDOWN BECAUSE HIS TWO BEST FRIENDS POISONED HIM AND NOW HE'S BLIND".
SO THEN IT ESCALATED TO: "BILL MADE A DEAL WITH FORD THAT HE WOULD BE NICE TO FIDDLEFORD BUT THEN HE GOT TICKED OFF AND BROKE THE DEAL SO HE EXPLODED AND REGENERATED AND UNTIL HE MAKES FIDDLEFORD HAPPY HE IS NOW A THREE-INCH TRIANGLE WITHOUT ANY POWERS, SO HE'S DESPERATELY TRYING TO MAKE FIDDLEFORD HAPPY BECAUSE HE WANTS HIS POWERS BACK REEEEAL BAD. SO HE MAKES HIM SWEET TEA WITH TOO MUCH SUGAR IN IT AND THEN HE LETS FIDDLEFORD PLAY HIS BANJO FOR HIM AND THEN HE ACCIDENTALLY FALLS FROM THE ROOF WHILE GAWKING AT A STUPID RAINBOW BECAUSE HE GOT EXCITED ABOUT PLAYING IN THE RAIN AND SEEING A RAINBOW. SO OF COURSE FIDDLEFORD FREAKS OUT AND RUNS DOWNSTAIRS TO UN-STICK BILL FROM THE GROUND AND WASH HIM OFF ONLY TO REALIZE THAT BILL HAD A GREAT TIME AND NOW BILL WANTS TO PLAY IN THE FLIPPING MUD BECAUSE WHAT THE HECK IF HE'S GOING TO BE A STUPID PHYSICAL BEING WITHOUT POWERS HE MIGHT AS WELL PLAY IN THE MUD. SO. YEAH. THAT'S HOW THE STORY GOES. HE ACCIDENTALLY BONDED WITH FIDDLEFORD AFTER HE ACCIDENTALLY FELL FROM THE ROOF AFTER HE WAS CHASED BY A CAT AFTER HE WAS EATEN AND VOMITED UP BY A DOG AFTER HE ACCIDENTALLY SENT FORD TO THE HOSPITAL."
Oh, and he also ate some cherries at some point. Never at any point were there fireflies inside of the shack (or ever), but... Uh... I was listening to Owl City.
I hope that role-play synopsis made you laugh as hard as it made me laugh.
Constructive criticism is more than welcome.
Stealing Is illegal.
Oh, also, I thought the sketch was worth sharing: sta.sh/0mrk1taeqlf

I KNOW I KNOW. I REALLY SHOULD. AND YOU SHOULD. AND LITERALLY EVERYONE SHOULD PAINT MORE, AGGHHH.
I've actually gotten tired of logging onto dA everyday, just to see more and more piled up notifications of the same basic thing. "Character with blank background, or character with super simple background". I mean, practicing poses and expressions is also important--but backgrounds can do wonders, and actually taking the time to paint something with a half-decent background can teach you about shading, perspective, etc. :'I It's also just a whole lot more interesting to look at.

I've actually started another painting, I'm trying to just paint without worrying about the sketch so much that I loose all interest ehehehehe.....
I know what you mean! I often feel like doing that because I can't be bothered after a really bad day, but want to try and make proper scenes and all that jazz :I

Oh, spEAKING OF BACKGROUNDS. I'm working on a one-page comic of Clockwork (well, it was supposed to be one-page, but idk how to keep adding panel material after I've extended the canvas) and I'm actually really happy with the background in panel three??: sta.sh/0j9bi65r6aa
A rare glimpse at Jack's comic sketches.
Unfortunately I made the horrible mistake of accidentally sketching Clockwork on the same layer as the background, so... Not sure what I'm going to do about that.
Oh yeah, no one can properly force themselves to learn ANYTHING after a really bad day. Like, you know that thing where you're in a horrible mood, but you keep trying to study anyways--even though you know you're not processing any of the information? Yeah, like that. After a bad day, just... Draw. Anything.

Well for the sketching things on same layer I usually do a good sketch on a new layer anyway so yeahhhhhh X"D
YES. THANK YOU. I'M REALLY HAPPY SOMEONE FINALLY UNDERSTANDSSSS X"D
I got 70% on my last math test because I wasn't absorbing any of the information, my normal is about 82% so yeah :I

Hmmmm... Yeah, I'm just not sure how to save the background.
YOU BET I UNDERSTAND. JUST NOW I WAS PRACTICING MATH FOR OVER AN HOUR, AND I GOT SO NUMB-BRAINED THAT I WASN'T ABLE TO ANSWER STUFF I'D ALREADY BEEN ANSWERING CORRECTLY. BLARG.
BRAINS NEED BREAKS TOO.
Aw, man. That sucks. :/ But seventy isn't TOO bad! I mean, when I was in the 3rd Grade, I only got TWO MATH QUESTIONS RIGHT ON MY FINAL EXAM BECAUSE I PANICKED.

Go over the sketch on a new layer and then erase it from the background layer??
AHHHHHHW WJFKNVDEMAD WNC // Brian dies from lack of sleep //
Yeah, but this is Year 9 not Grade 3, so it has more of an effect on my life ;n;
Plus, in year 3 I didn't care about maths and was consistently getting D's and now I'm in year 9 and getting A's that I want to keep :"I

Yeah, Elementary school really doesn't affect your life. At all. Which is how you get kids in middle school (and sometimes high school) who can barely read... Yikes.

Whoa
okay
this is probably the best piece of art i've seen you do, like, ever. i love it sooo much and the depth of the table-bench whatever looks really real to me! the cast shadow looks nice- despite the fact its a little hard to see the little triangle man's legs, the character looks believable, however i would try adding a bit of darker shadow under the eye, it might make him look tired but i think it would bring out the eye a lot more and make it look a little better.
those are honestly my only complaints, this piece- is pretty perfect in my opinion. its not of the skill level of some artists but with the skill that you have this is absolutely perfect!!!
(also im sorry i couldnt read the funny description incase there were spoilers)

Thanks bunches for taking the time to critique this work! It's not often that somebody does that, and I really appreciate it.
I pictured the wooden bench-thing to be an indoor table. Like maybe somebody left a window open on a warm summer's night, or something along those lines. But the actual setting of the table didn't bother me too much, since I'm pretty content with hearing how other people interpret it--and because I wanted their to be a snug, surreal feeling to the piece (which I'm just hoping was pulled off) I thought it would be best if people saw it the way they wanted to. Maybe he's outside, maybe he's inside. Maybe it's a table, maybe it's a bench, maybe it's a very old counter or cabinet. Depends on who you are. As long as the general idea is there of a dark, snug night with fireflies and an unusual character. After all, an outdoor bench might give off that feeling to certain people more than an inside table. Vise versa.
His legs aren't meant to be seen well! I'm not sure if this is a move that I should have pulled, but I wanted the lighting to be as real and in-depth as possible--which meant I didn't want things to be popping out in odd places. If I had taken the more cartoon-y route (which I almost always do), I would have used line-art and such to make the focus of the painting be more widespread--meaning, Bill (triangle guy) would be easier to see. As in most cartoons, the character has visible line-art--whereas the background may be well-drawn, but not outlined in a way that would distract the watcher's eye from what they're supposed to be seeing. (I'm not sure if this was the best route to take with the cast shadow, but idk man--I don't have night vision so I figured the viewers wouldn't either. I'm not the best at realism just yet.)
As for there being shadows under the eye--I considered this, but decided against it after thinking it would make him look tired. But after you've pointed it out, I'd have to agree--it probably would look better with some eye-shadow there. xD I'll probably try to add some in!
Again, thanks for taking the time to look over this, and to leave a good comment! I'm really pleased to hear that you like the painting so much, since I honestly think this is my best piece of work yet. Which--although I'm far from being the next Van Gogh--is still a step in the right direction, so I'm glad somebody noticed! ;D
(The description doesn't include any spoilers for Gravity Falls or for my fan-made comic, btw.)
