Description
I'm gonna let you in on a little secret. Rusty/Firepaw/Fireheart/Firestar? I actually love that guy. I don't think he's overpowered, a stereotypical main character, etc. The Cat Jesus jokes are pretty funny, but as a kid I loved Fire'. He was my favorite Warriors character in the original series. I remember thinking everything about him was awesome--his design, his character arc, his back story, his name(s). All cool. The only thing that bothered me was how he seemed to be drawn with a totally different design on each cover. Like on the first cover he was this long-haired, bright ginger cat. Just a solid ginger. But on another cover, he was a tabby with white paws or something?? I never liked the idea of tabby Firepaw for some reason. I was the basic kid that wanted a SOLID FLORESCENT ORANGE CAT.Of course, when I went to color him for this piece, I realized that aesthetically, it just looked awful. So I added some different variations of fiery colors, aaand I think I like this a lot more than the solid orange 11-year-old me thought was so cool.
Also I just wanted to see if I could actually draw cats now.
The file name is random. Katze is one of the only German words I remember from my toddler-hood, and originally I was just drawing a random cat, not Firepaw, so I titled the file "katze" with no real thought to it. This is Firepaw by the way, not an older Fireheart/Firestar!

Yup, young me was also a huge supporter of NEON ORANGE FANTA-COLORED Firestar. But, I completely agree that in the end, it's not the most appealing, or realistic design.
I really love the design you gave him! Especially his dark ear tips and tail, those really stand out to me.

What's crazy is how literal the fandom used to take designs. Like:
Firestar = neon orange cat
Greystripe = solid gray cat with darker stripe all the way down his body
Bluestar = blue-gray (or bright blue!) with a literal star on her forehead
Ferncloud = a mass of ferns that hovered above the forest floor whenever mist appeared on a full moon
One thing that always bothered me in particular, even as a kid, was how upset people got over Scourge. Which paw was white, what color his collar was, how big the teeth in his collar were, what his eye color was, how big his claws were, what size he was, etc. No one was happy with him. No matter what you did, somebody would comment with: ummmmmm tihs is nice and all buuuuutttt... why in that sytyle?? no offenes but ur art of warriors is not good. pleaes draw different!
Like once upon a time you just couldn't have a drastically different style, because people (children) would lose their minds if you drew them with any kind of defining style. Like making their face too angular, or something.
OOOOOH OR WHEN SOMEONE WOULD ANIMATE AN ORIGINAL CHARACTER THAT WAS SLIGHTLY TINTED ORANGE AND SOME KID WOULD COMMENT WITH: "I LOVE FIRESTAR!!!!!!!!11!!!1!!!" AND IT WAS CLEARLY NOT FIRESTAR. OR
OR
THE KID WOULD COMMENT WITH: "uMMMM YOUR CHARACTER LOOKS 2 MUCH LIKE FIRESTAR!!!"
OR
WHEN PEOPLE WOULD COMMENT STUFF LIKE: "YOUR ART LOOKS LIKE URNAM7'S/BLUEKYOKITTY'S/[INSERTBIGWARRIORARTISTHERE] YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DO THAT!"

That's a rather...creative way of drawing Ferncloud. But yeah, I totally remember when people took warrior cat designs more literally. And even though they were really unrealistic, I have strong feeling of nostalgia whenever I see old AMVs featuring bright orange Firestar, single stripe Greystripe, or star-forehead Bluestar. But I also love how nowadays, people can make up their own designs without some fifth grade turd being like "UUUM ACTUALLY THEY DON'T LOOK LIKE THAT!!" I mean, I'm sure there are some people out there who are still like that, but they aren't nearly as common as they once were.
And ooooh yeah, I definitely don't miss the days of people saying that a random cat OC reminds them of a warriors character. And oh yeah, lets not even get started on how everyone accused everyone of stealing someone's style, which is just stupid.

Agghh same. Those solid neon orange Fireheart's really punch me in the gut.
What's so sad, is that I remember being that way, just not in the extreme. I wouldn't comment, but I did think that kind of stuff to myself. Like every time I saw a Fireheart that wasn't SOLID FIERY ORANGE, I would instantly go: "Aw man, he doesn't look as cool....." and I think that was largely because Fireheart was supposed to be super uniquely colored in the books. For the entire first series, everyone marvels about how solid and orange his coat is. So whenever I saw someone try to spice him up a little, my gut reaction was to go: 'THAT'S NOT WHAT THE PROPHECY SPOKE OF--"

Yeeeeah, I was the same way. But thank GOD I didn't actually comment about it. Heck, I remember when it came to the whole "Scourge's collar" argument, I was a FIRM supporter of his collar being purple. Thank goodness I never got into fights with people in the comment sections of warrior cat AMVs, but you can bet that middle school me would get real heated if she saw someone draw Scourge with that SINFUL red collar.

Okay, so funny story. I liked both purple and red. Neither bothered me. I believed that in canon (at least in the manga), his collar was purple. But I liked the head canon that his collar started off purple, and got red with blood. Because it added that edge. So if someone drew him with the purple collar, I didn't care. If it was red, I also didn't care. To this day I think both are cool.
The only color that made me HEATED was yellow. Whenever he had a yellow collar............ no. I don't care if it was on the Russian cover. I hated it.
[TF2 Soldier voice] Your Russian tricks won't work on these American eyes.

Yeah, I remember liking that head canon too, so it slowly made me okay with seeing people draw him with a red collar.
Heheheheheheh. You must've hated Urnam's Scourge AMV, then

It's funny because in retrospect, blood doesn't stain bright red. But you know what IS still cool? The idea of a purple collar that has nasty dark brown blood stains splattered across it. A realistic bloody mess.
Nope, I actually loved her AMV. Urnam could do anything, and I wouldn't care.

I'll keep that in mind if I ever decide to draw Scourge fan art...
We could never be mad at Urnam.
