Chapter 1JASPER
Jasper lay on his bed, staring at the cracked ceiling of his old New York appartment. He could hear his Aunt in the kitchen, whisteling as she cooked what seemed to be yet another Italian Pasta. Frankly, Jasper thought it just tasted like plastic. But compared to the other people in the city, he knew he shouldn't complain. His best friend lived in an abandoned hotel, a few blocks from where he lived.
He turned slightly and looked at the alarm clock. Five thirty seven. Two minutes since he had last looked. When was Cammy going to come home? She said she'd be back at five, after having to go to the drug store to pick up his medication. Until she came back, he wasn't allowed to get up, and man did he have to pee.
Being twelve had few advantages in living in New York. He was always picked on, for being the smallest in his grade. He had to watch out for gangs. Grown-ups didn't take him seriously. Yet, he knew it didn't have to be that way. He could have been the most feared kid in his school, with his powers. But he wasn't allowed to use them in public. There was also the situation of his illness….
Finally, after what seemed like forever but had only been ten more minutes, he heard the old, battered front door open. He automatically knew it was his sister, her scent was strong and he would be able to tell it was her anywhere. But he still didn't get up. He waited until his sister opened his bedroom door before sitting up. "Took you long enough. Five more minutes and it would have killed me." Jasper grinned crookedly, in a way that some girls found attractive, but only bothered his sister.
"Shut up, Ghost." Using her favorite nick-name on him, Cammy sat next to him and shoved a battered paper bag at him. "Hurry before the attacts happen again. I don't like having to hold you down with your head between my knees." She grumbled, standing again. "Aunt D. told me dinner will be ready in about five minutes." She added as she left the room, closing the door hard enough for plaster to crumble from the ceiling.
Jasper rolled his eyes. "Great to see you're safe too, and still alive. How's life?" he grumbled to nobody as he dug into the paper bag and pulled out his medication. Not many people had it, and his sister had to get it ordered from a guy. They knew it was dangerous, but it was this, or let him die. Neither of them were willing to let that happen.
He unscrewed the cap and dumped on of the large, blue and yellow pills onto his hand. He stared at it reprochfully, setting down the medication clumsily. He waited, not wanting to swallow the pill. Finally, just as he was about to swallow the pill, a fit of coughing over came him and he doubled over. Spasms racked his shoulders, and blood sprayed onto his sleeve, which was covering his mouth.
Cammy rushed in, her eyes wide and scared. "Jasper! You know you have to take it fast!" She exclaimed and sat next to him, rubbing his back until the fit subsided. Jasper always looked up to her as his big, tough sister who could survive the hard city life on her own if she had to, but it was moments like this, when his illness took over, that the barriers came down and he could see the scaired, fifteen year old girl that was his sister.
He got a glass of water from his bedside, one he filled up each night, and drank the pill with it. He coughed again, this time not from the illness but just a normal fit of coughing from swallowing usch a big pill.
Cammy let out a breath that she hadn't even known to be holding back. "You okay now?" She asked gently, but sharply as her tough barriers came back up and her face hardened to the tough girl everyone knew her to be.
"Yeah." Jasper rasped, drinking more water. He swallowed before adding, "I just took a while and it came over. Doesn't matter." He muttered, laying down again.
Cammy sighed. "Jaz, you know it matters." She said, using her pet name for him. She had so many nick-names for him, he couldn't even count. "Just make sure you are more careful." She stood and left again, this time more hesitantly.
Jasper closed his eyes and let his dreams overtake him.
