Description This is NOT free to use! So please... don't. Thanks.

I'm now offering commissions of pixel gemstones like these! If you're interested, check out this journal !

Onyx is... fun. A bit overwhelming of a personality for some, but she's... fun. She's another character of mine that likes to fight for the thrill of it.

She has some history with both Celestine  and Chrome Diopside , and actually ends up joining my main trio later on.

I've never actually seen a piece of onyx with this kind of red, black and white banding all in one. It was fun to try making a cabochon with basically no reference for once. I think it turned out okay?

Onyx is basically agate, the main difference being the fact that agate has curvy bands versus the parallel banding in onyx.

Whoa, it looks like a planet!

Kinda does, yeah! The rings and everything remind me of Jupiter a bit, just a completely different colour. ^^

Hey, you think that's where the rock really comes from?

Jupiter is a gas giant! Basically, there are no solid rocks at all on the planet, and most silica rich gemstones like quartz (and therefore onyx) are made directly on Earth because of its silica-rich crust!

Also I hope that wasn't a joke or sarcasm or something because I'm just about the most oblivious nerd in existence! Oops!

Oh no, that wasn't sarcasm! Unlike you, I've completely forgotten my science. I should've remembered about Jupiter.

Nah, if it isn't pertinent to your lifestyle/interests, there's really no reason to remember all the finicky details. I just like science! And also astronomy and other planets have always been really interesting to me. c;

I'm the physics nerd, but what kind of subjects do you like? (Or activities, if you're less a school person!)

I find science fascinating! It just amazes me that humans can be so intelligent. My favorite school subject was and always will be literature. Just the writing and reading...it's such a surreal feeling! (I think I was a librarian in a past life!) I also loved hearing and reading anything about Greek and Norse mythology. I was never a fan of math...I sucked.  I was never really one for social studies, rather, I loved talking to people from different lands myself. In class, they'd teach the same thing and you'd never get the chance to meet the folks and get to see their customs. I loved taking music and was pretty good at the flute for a time too, but art was my #1 passion! Everyone asked me for ideas and decorations!

I do a lot of writing myself, and when I was younger I was almost always reading! Most of the time now I'm too busy to read on my own, though, as the books are assigned instead for schoolwork. I have a few friends really interested in Greek and Norse mythology as well! I never really got into it (I myself suck at history and most things related), but I love the uniqueness allowed by human diversity, too!

In terms of music, I've been playing the violin for approximately 10 years and taught myself the piano. (I'm still a mediocre player at best.) I was the crafty artistic kid, but I never really had enough motivation to pursue the arts until now. Honestly I was the most confused kid when it came to uni, since I had absolutely no exact idea of what I wanted to go into for a career. I'm thinking physics so far, but we'll see. ^^'

Keep your eyes opened and your brain a-tickin'! Maybe the thing you wanna be will walk right in front of you!  If it's physics you're into, then I say take a stab at it!

I think you pulled this one off really well! It needs less attention to light reflection than, say, a pearl, because the banding design takes up a lot of focus visually. But it still has that fun pixelated animation so it fits well with your other images.

The only thing I might add is to move some more backlighting on the lower left side, so it's not the same shade all the way around the edge. Perhaps a 10% opacity rim on the bottom left to show that there's reflected light coming from somewhere, for visual interest and to add a bit more dynam..ism? to the reflection animation.

Thank you!

It is noticeably cleaner in appearance than the pearl one I made. I did use a few references for the shape from some other quartz types, meaning the general shines seen here are based on real life examples, though none of the refs were of the exact mineral type or the colour, so I had to improvise for quite a bit.
I do like the suggestion of some form of backlighting! I noticed it was looking rather off, but couldn't pinpoint what it was, so I'll try applying your critique to see if it looks any better. ^^
