The Golden Bat is a superhero whose origins trace all the way back to Japan. While his media sadly has not made much headway in the United States he has gained popularity in Italy, South Korea, and Brazil. As a skeletal wizard from beyond time and space he has just about every power imaginable. Super strength, flight, super durability, teleportation, and countless magic spells. Awakened by a team of archeologists from an Atlantian ruin after 10,000 years to fight for justice, usually against his claw-handed arch nemesis Dr. Nazo. Rather than any sort of heroic catchphrase, The Golden Bat is recognized by his maniacal laughter in the face of evil. He had his own anime series back in the 60s and has even appeared in various live action movies. However his true origins can be traced all the way back to the Japanese art of kamishibai (or paper theater). A streetside form of storytelling through slideshow illustrations accompanied by voice acting narrations that would set the foundation for manga. It was in such a kamishibai that The Golden Bat made his first appearance in 1931. Approximately seven years before the first Superman comic was released (1938). Meaning The Golden Bat might not only be Japan’s first superhero, but the world’s first ever superhero.
