Jack arrives – after what seemed like an eternity to him – at Toothiana’s castle and drops himself from the sky to the floor with a gust of wind and a few twirling snowflakes. He takes a deep breath before making way toward the tower but smiles when he spots the guardian of memories engrossed in her work.
“Tooth!”, Jack calls out for his friend who turns around to look at him and a warm smile spreads on her slender face when seeing him.
“Oh, Jack..just a minute..yes take that one..oooh how beautiful, yes put it there..”, she flutters around the room a bit still in the middle of work for a while before descending down next to Jack.
“I thought you might come here.”, she says when next to him.
“Then you know why I’m here.”, Jack’s eyes light up with excitement when he turns to look at his friend but soon change to ones filled with confusion when the smile she usually wears has faded away with her words and she looks very troubled.
“Don’t tell me..you don’t have them?”, Jack squeezes his wooden staff harder in worry.
“Oh no, I..I have them, of course...it’s just that..”, she looks away from Jack and concentrates on a seemingly interesting spot on the ground.
“What is it then? If you have them then there’s no problem right?”, Jack smiles feeling relieved but a small ounce of worry still latches itself in his gut ‘cause of his friend’s actions.
“I want to help, I really do but I can’t give you her memories.”, she finally says and looks at Jack apologetically.
“Wha-- What do you mean you can’t? Of course you can.”, Jack tries to prevent the panic - that is rising – getting the best of him.
“No Jack, I can’t.”, she looks away from Jack feeling too much sympathy for her friends agony to look him in the eye.
“Why?!”, Jack demands to know striking his staff to the ground making a furious snowy breeze fill the room.
“ Mother Earth has demanded it to be so. That they need not remember their past in order to do their work unconditionally.”
“She wha—How can she—why would—And you agree with that?!”, Jack tries his best to grasp the situation.
“Of course not! But I can’t go against it. They also said they agree with her and don’t need to know. So it’s not my choice to make or to force them to remember.”, Toothiana says in distress of trying to make Jack – who now just stares ahead himself looking as blank as a just printed paper - understand the reasons for this.
“I’m so sorry Jack, I really am but I think you should—“, she tries to comfort him but when she reaches out to touch his shoulder he pushes her away and swoops up to catch the wind and fly far far away from there.
Anywhere else, anywhere but here. Toothiana calls out after him but doesn’t dare follow. There’s nothing she could possibly say to make him feel any better. He must somehow work things out himself. She trusts him that he can do it though it might take some time. Time to either let go and forget or move forward.
Right now nothing goes through his head, nothing but anguish. She’s finally here again, such a miracle he thought would never happen and now that it has happened, she’s lost to him still. So close but still too far to reach her heart.
Small tears fall out of the corners of his eyes, freeze in the cold breeze he flies with and fall to the ground below and shatter. Just as his heart has once again.
Jack’s ferocious speed slows down rapidly after a while when his anger turns into sorrow and he doesn’t feel the strength to carry on anymore. He stops and lets himself fall and all his thoughts roam free.
Is she really forever gone of his reach? But shouldn’t he also be happy just have her here even if it would mean never to hold her like before? So he should just let her be and not love her?
That makes him stop and he uses the wind to catch him just before hitting the ground.
No. He could never not love her. He could never just bury the thoughts of her and let it be. She has been at the center of his heart from the moment they met and she believed in him and always be there no matter what till the ends of time. Even if she doesn’t remember him or feel the same way now, that doesn’t change his feelings. So why should he just give up? If she’s too far away he can just catch up to her. Remind her. Show her. And above all love her.
And even if she won’t remember their shared memories – they can make new memories.
Jack breathes deeply in some of the fresh crispy air and smiles widely again full of joy of getting to know his loved one once again. He springs into the air with such velocity that most of the dandelions on the field he was standing blow off all around him. Yes. He would first bring her flowers like he used to. Of every color that he can possibly find for just as her new name Holi means the festival of colors, she has been and always will be the colors of his world.
