Malyuk (the small one) is a Ukrainian assault rifle. It is a further development of the Ukrainian Vepr assault rifle. The previous Vepr was first revealed in 2003. It was a rather raw design that never reached production. However development continued and the Malyuk can be seen as an improved and more refined version of the Vepr. This weapon is based on the AK-74 but has a bullpup layout. There were many variations of the AK assault rifles with bullpup layout. Most of them were failures. However the Malyuk managed to reach production. This weapon is used by Ukrainian special forces.

The Malyuk is chambered for the Soviet 5.45x39 mm intermediate ammunition, that is widespread in Ukraine and Russia. There is also a version of the Malyuk, chambered for Soviet 7.62x39 mm ammunition. Malyuk has a similar barrel as the AK-74. It is 415 mm long.

Unlike most other bullpup weapons, the Malyuk is well balanced. It can be easily controlled by one hand. It is more accurate than the AK-74 due to its design. In case of the AK-74 the recoil force lifts the barrel upwards after each shot. In case with Malyuk the barrel is in line with the buttstock and the recoil force war reduced significantly.

In some areas the Malyuk has superior ergonomics to the AK-74. A safety lock is located on the pistol grip and is operated by a thumb. Magazine release button is also located on the foregrip. A fire mode selector is located on the buttstock and is awkward to use. Unfortunately this weapon is not ambidextrous and can not match in terms of ergonomics some of the Western weapons.

This weapon can be easily field stripped.

This weapon is fed from 30-round capacity magazines. It is compatible with all standard magazines for the AK-74 assault rifle. It is also compatible with 45-round capacity magazines from the RPK-74 light machine gun.

his weapon has a Picatinny-type scope rail. It comes as standard with flip-up iron sights, but is normally used with add-on optics or red dot sights. Range of effective fire is 500 meters.
