Description After three long and painful months of work, “Deviation No. 33” is finally completed…I need a vacation.

Three months ago I had this idea. The world’s opinions on these people have changed a lot since then and I feared that this picture would no longer be relevant. Given that that is not the case, I don’t know whether to feel good or bad about it.

Four men, four countries as their helms of power and four objects: A sword, a bow, measuring scales and scythe. I thought somebody would have figured it out by now.

ANSWER:The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

Some of you probably did but didn’t bother to tell me. The dead giveaway were these deviations in my favorites.

Now that it is finally done, I have no compunction of revealing the true purpose and motive of making this picture.

You know, this picture was originally supposed to be funny but, unless you’re a fan of George Carlin, some things are only funny as long as they aren’t true.

Back in my High School days, I had a little call sign that people could recognize me by:

“Apocalypse now? Ask me how!”

I wasn’t the social type all that much. I did some things to people I’m not proud of and I was feared by most of the school. The fault is my own because back then I just didn’t care how I presented myself to people. That phrase meant that if you desired to make all hell break loose or just stir up a ruckus, you could ask me how to get it done. I didn’t really do anything destructive, it was just a catchphrase and since some of my friends won’t let it die, I decided to use it as the basis of my next deviation.

“The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” was a phrase that kept popping up in books and other forms of entertainment, but I didn’t truly understand what it meant. So I looked it up on Wikipedia and discovered that they are biblical figures, the harbingers of doom for all humanity. Conquest, War, Famine and Death. If you really wanted the shit to hit the fan, you could ask these guys!

I decided to make a picture of the four horsemen, so I look in the archives of deviantART for inspiration. Most of the visualizations of these characters are hooded and cloaked, never showing their true face. My picture was going to break the trend and use real live people to personify them. “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in the 21st Century” if you will.

I did my research (watching Fox News ) on finding the four most infamous and dangerous people on the planet today. Hassan Nasrallah, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Kim Jong-Il and Osama bin Laden, would be my four horsemen.

As I began drawing the initial sketches (which now seems like years ago -_-; ), I studied more on these people and began to find their similarities to their characters on a high number. The object of the picture itself had changed dramatically, from being comical, to being fact-based fiction.

[NOTE]
The order in which the Four Horsemen appear has been altered. Firstly, in respect of interrelations between these individuals. Nasrallah and bin Laden are of different religious movements and are at either side of the lineup, Ahmadinejad was suspected to have supplied rockets to Hezbollah during the conflict in July 2006 and Kim Jong-Il is just following the order. Secondly to how great of a threat they should be considered, from left to right.

1.) The Horseman of War (Hassan Nasrallah)
This choice was driven primarily by the Israel-Hezbollah conflict last summer but also the more recent internal conflicts between the Lebanon government and Hezbollah. One quote from Nasrallah in particular sealed his fate as my ‘Horseman of War’ :

“No army in the world can make us drop the weapons from our hands!”

2.) The Horseman of Conquest (Mahmoud Ahmadinejad)
Probably better known as the ‘Antichrist’ or ‘False Prophet’, Ahmadinejad fits the role as he tries to convince the world that Iran’s nuclear program is for peaceful applications only. It would have been President Bush to take this role, but that would be a major stereotype.

3.) The Horseman of Famine (Kim Jong-Il)
Originally chosen for the fact that in his mad pursuit of nuclear armament, he is letting his people starve to death, the “Dear Leader” is noted for many violations of human rights while he enjoys many luxuries, especially foreign movies. Were things possibly any better under the rule of his father, Kim-Il Sung?

4.) The Horseman of Death (Osama Muhammed Awad bin Laden)
I don’t think I have to explain this one. A man whom we had trained to be a survivor and financed to fight off Soviet occupation during the Cold War now directs his weapons at us. A man who has taken responsibility for the deaths of thousands of Americans, not just on 9/11 and who earnestly wishes the death of Western Civilization and everyone in it. It truly comes as a shock to me that he is all but forgotten in the public eye and we are not putting enough effort to find him.

What I noticed a lot on deviantART is that most political figures seem only to be defiled with reckless abandon and not focusing on the elements on what exactly makes these people so despicable. I wanted to avoid that and actually try to pose them in way that would capture their true face. Make them as human and unappealing as they really are.

Politics, in general, doesn’t seem to be such a hot topic on the site. The prototypes for this picture and 'Profile of a Traitor' rank pretty low in my gallery. I’m a person who is observant of what is going on in the real world. I like to imagine things within a plane of reality and that I what I set out to do with this.

Even I do not know why this took so long to complete. It was a collection of grievances that made this the headache it was. Honestly, I think the devil himself was on my ass about this picture with all the bad stuff that kept happening, especially when I was working on it.

This is the epitome of my “lineart” style. You know those outlines of the countries that I put up for download in my “Scraps”? I actually retraced those from original maps bit by bit, North Korea being the worst.

The quality of the sketches were really bad and more time had to be devoted to actually redraw entire portions of the characters. It was my own damn fault because I aimed to do most of the work on the computer and I believed it could be done much sooner.

Regardless of how this deviation is accepted by the community, I am going to retire this art style. It is not time-efficient, primitive and, in a way, redundant. In the three months I devoted to this POS, many of you have already pushed out dozens of better deviations, thanks to your fancy image-editing programs. I can afford them now, but my laptop can’t even handle a single video download from YouTube, let alone possibly being able to run such programs.

So until I get a new computer for my own, I going to stick with my 'Traditional Art' style. Working with just a pencil and paper gives me much more capacity for creativity and the stats show most of my HD (Hand-Drawn) pictures are the popular ones.

This was my last ace in the hole, the very reason I kept on going for over three months. I just kept telling myself, “Wait till Deviation No. 33 is finally done. It will be the one to blow them away!“ but now, I really don’t care if it gets noticed much or not. I don’t draw just to have my work liked by the masses. I do it to express my ideals on certain topics. The kind of things that nobody else could or would draw.

I really do like it, but I have one question::
Isn`t it "Death, War, Famine and -Pestilance-", not Conquest? Just a question becuase that is what I have always been told...

I noticed that a lot amongst other submissions to this category but according to the Wikipedia entry on 'The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse'([link] ), the horse and the rider have separate meanings. The white horse represents Pestilence, while the rider represents Conquest.

That is what I based my choice for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, to be the first horseman. The reason why he is second in the lineup, however, is already explained in the comments.

Thanks a lot, Joseph! I still remember that you were the only one who adamantly supported this project, from the very beginning with the prototypes.

Yeah, I also believed it to be a great idea, given I thought it up over three months ago.

I used to practice the poses in front of a mirror before I drew the character sketches:

-Nasrallah has an aggressive stance, suiting the behavior he's been showing as of late.

-Ahmadinejad has both his physical stance and his clothes to a welcoming or open pose, as to lure anyone he speaks to into a false sense of security.

-Kim Jong-Il, in the photos I've seen of him, is pretty full of himself for a 5-foot midget dictator and thus, I posed him in a way that seems fitting for his ego.

-Finally, Osama bin Laden is the lone wolf. He has shown no affiliation whatsoever to the other people I chose as my horsemen and he (and his supporters) fights for his cause alone.

The traditional pictures of these characters has a wall of flames for a background. I decided since this concept is being brought into the 21st century, a nuclear fire would be more appropriate. It was originally going to be drawn by me, but I didn't have too much luck with that and, instead, used a picture I found on Google.

All that you have read in the comments was all of the observations I made about these people in the three months' course of this picture's creation. As you know, my ideas have a great deal of thought before carrying them out.

Like it, you've portrayed these people very well.

There could have been a little more detail in the actual people, but ahh, it gets the point across all as well, just me being nitpicky. Good job, I like!

Thank you, Mr. Scholl.

You always got something interesting to say when you comment on my works. That's why I was a tad eager for you to see this.

Oh, believe me, I am highly unsatisfied with this outcome. I would have added colors and textures to their clothes, skin tones, the works! But I just lack the art skills to to do that and them's the brakes with Microsoft Paint.

I might actually want to do a remake of this if and when I get a new computer. (and hopefully it won't take as long @_@) I actually found "Paint Shop Pro IX" at Best Buy, but this laptop probably wouldn't be able to run it properly, given the damage it's sustained.

Pfft, Nasrallah couldn't be a horseman. He spends most of his time hiding in bunkers and speaking to crowds through speakerphones, and then making public appearances only if behind body guards and bullet-proof glass.

Believe me that I have entertained the possibility of our own President Bush being amongst the Four Horsemen.

He would have been 'Conquest', but I decided that everyone knows Bush and the joke that he is. The purpose of this picture was to bring the four greatest and somewhat obscure threats to humanity to light.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who took that role instead, shares many qualities to Dubya, chief amongst them both being 'fear mongers' to the American people.

There is in fact mention of a fifth horseman, Jesus Christ: The Word of God. He is the one to smite evil and uphold good, but George W. Bush is by no means worthy of that kind of recognition.

Here is the link to the Wikipedia entry on 'The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse' if you wish to read more about it.
