Description The Toa of the Earth.

Part Two. Arrival.

FLASH! What was once a moment ago nothingness was now filled with stars and planets. One planet in particular, stood out in the fact that it had oceans, jungles, and deserts.
The planet the director sent us to, Lieutenant Peters remembered. Then he remembered why he wasn't suffocating in the void of space. The shuttle, he thought. The ripping open of time and space and flinging him and his marines through this tear in the fabric of the universe had left them all with a queasy feeling in their stomachs. One marine, a young private named Chuck Branson yanked off his helmet and promptly vomited into it. He looked awkwardly around for a place to deposit it, and seeing none, he just continued to hold it in his hands, a greenish look on his face.
Finally, his Sergeant broke the awkward silence by saying, "Son I'm pretty sure that is not that helmet's intended use."
"Would you like me to wear it sarge?" Branson responded sarcastically.
The sergeant just laughed.
"That's a pretty picture," another guy responded.
Suddenly, the Marines felt a sense of gravity. They had reached the planet's atmosphere.
This turbulence caused Private Branson to vomit in his helmet again. This time, Peters said, "Private as soon as we land, you're dumping that crap. Understood?"
"Sir, yes sir." He responded sickly.
Peters began a broadcast to the other shuttles side by side with them, "Marines! We are about to go where no man has gone before. When we hit planet side, we are to regroup and get away from these shuttles as fast as possible. The reason being, we know that there is life here and they can make weapons. Now let's make Earth proud! Oo-rah!" All other shuttles and marines responded with a unanimous, "Oo-rah!"
Peters yelled, "Prepare for impact!"
And then there was impact. It was a violent, shaking, crashing impact. It was so terrible, Peters worried for a moment if he had already lost Marines. He coughed and shouted, "Everyone okay?"
Everyone nodded with a strong stiffness. The injuries among them didn't even count to Marines. Just minor bruises and some scrapes, nothing worth noting. As ordered, as soon as Private Branson dumped the contents of his helmet, looked at it with a disgusted look, and tossed it away, continuing on helmetless. The violent impact had shaken him up and he would've vomited again if he had anything left.
He wasn't alone, to his relief. The effects of the transport had left varying degrees of nausea among the other Marines, causing more than one to go on without a helmet.
He swiftly grabbed his M-17/A7 service rifle, loaded it, and said,
"Let's move out!"
The platoon dashed away from the shuttles locked and loaded, blending in with the jungle environment in their reactive jungle camouflage uniforms. One squad leader held up a hand and pointed to a wooden sign. A young corporal walked up to it and scanned it with a strange device.
"What's that?" asked Lance Corporal Masterson.
"It's a translation device. It can decipher most known languages and take a darn good guess at what the ones it doesn't know yet," The Corporal responded. A moment passed, "Got it!" The Private yell/whispered.
"It's a name, Tesara. It says it's about a half a klick out. I think it's a city or something." Peters nodded and said, "Let's move." The Marines dashed off in the direction of this "Tesara." Unbeknownst to them, they were being watched. A pair of predator's eyes locked on to the intruders, and followed silently. The Bone Hunters; were on the hunt.

One hour later…

The Marines were fighting for their lives. One moment they were sneaking through the jungle on their way to this, "Tesara," and the next, they were attacked by these… things. They were brutal looking, and carried swords that looked looted, for no two looked at all alike. The first sign that they had that they were being followed was the scream of Private Branson being stabbed in the back, severing his spine, and killing him instantly.
"AMBUSH!!!"
Peters shouted at the top of his lungs. He brought his rifle to aim at a Bone Hunter only to have the weapon cut in half.
He then realized something; they were using swords, which meant a knife could probably hurt them too. With that in mind he drew his Ka-Bar fighting knife, and stabbed it in the throat. To his great satisfaction, it died quickly. But this was what puzzled Peters, for the Director had said they were completely non-biological. This one looked more organic than anything else, mostly because it was writhing in the dirt clutching at its neck, coughing, and dark blue blood was seeping out of its throat. Peters put this aside, assuming that this must've been the species that designed the robotic creature he was shown on the view screen. Thankfully, the armament of this race was low tech.  However, they must have had a rudimentary understanding of explosives, because they were now shooting tan spiked balls that detonated on impact, killing several Marines on the first shot. Peters looked around, trying to see if he could salvage this disaster, but he realized it was a losing fight. He looked to Lieutenant McClain, who dodged one of the creatures riding on a large red beast. It started to turn around before she shot it and its mount with a full magazine of automatic 7.62 fire with her SCAR-EH 52.
She looked to Peters and shouted, "That was my last magazine! We need to fall back!" She drew her antique Colt 1911 just in time to shoot a charging Bone Hunter, who got off a lucky shot with the spiked ball shooter. This one must've been a dud or something, because it didn't explode when it struck her leg, the spikes simply shredded it. She let out a cry of pain and dropped, going into shock and beginning to bleed out.
"CORPSMAN UP!"
Peters yelled to a shotgun-wielding Navy Corpsman. The Corpsmen are to the Marines as medics are to the Army; therefore, they took care of the casualties, and became ones themselves. He dashed over to the now pale faced Lieutenant McClain, before being stopped by a bellowing bone hunter. The Corpsman didn't have time for this, so he simply blasted a hole in its chest. The large creature staggered foreword a few steps, and was clubbed to the ground with the butt of his shotgun.
He pumped his shotgun and turned to two other Bone Hunters and yelled, "Who's next?!?"
The hunters fled, leaving the Corpsman to his patient. The Corpsman knelt by her and shouted to Staff Sergeant Davis,
"Cover me!"
The grizzled Sergeant nodded and began mowing down charging Bone Hunters with his M-295 LMG machine gun. Peters dashed over to where Lieutenant McClain lay, dodging spike balls as he ran. He vaulted over a downed tree and landed in front of the Corpsman. "How's she doing?" Peters asked the Corpsman.
"Not good sir, she's bleeding out. I'm surprised the ball didn't take her leg off. I'm going to apply a tourniquet; it'll shut off blood flow to her leg. She won't bleed out, but the leg will have to be amputated."
Peters nodded and said, "Whatever you have to do man."
The Corpsman nodded, and applied the tourniquet. Peters looked at McClain, she was pale. She looked barely awake. Her eyes were beginning to roll back into her head. Peters leaned in and said almost in a whisper,
"Catherine, you do not have permission to die. Do not die, that's an order!"
She responded with a barely audible, "Yes sir."
And with that, she slipped into unconsciousness. Sergeant Davis was still firing, and then suddenly ran out of ammunition. He cursed under his breath and picked up a spiked ball launcher from a dead hunter, and fired it at a mounted hunter. The sphere detonated, leaving one less hunter to deal with. He reloaded and was about to fire when he heard, "Fall back Marines! I repeat, FALL BACK!"
Peters picked up Lieutenant McClain's unconscious body and draped her over his shoulders in the Fireman's Carry. Peters was the last to fall back, one hand holding on to Catherine, and the other firing a silenced bullpup SMG. When he was sure everyone had fallen back, he turned and dashed through the jungle. A garbled static transmission came through his radio. Peters leaned his head and said, "Repeat?"
The reply came back as, "We have come under attack by the non-biologicals as specified by the Director! We're going to launch a localized EMP and render them inoperable! How copy?"
"Good copy, launch EMP!"
He finally saw the position the Marines had fallen back to, right outside of a village. They were indeed under attack, and somehow, these green robots appeared to control air! A hurricane force wind smacked into him and sent him flying into a tree. Right before impact he shifted Catherine so that he would absorb the impact. He winced as he both heard and felt several ribs crack.
He looked up at a black armored being with a large glowing hammer with a blade on one side. It looked down to the bloody Lieutenant McClain, and said something in a level tone and reached down for her.
"Oh no you don't!" Peters yelled as he got up and swung a punch.
Although the gloves he wore were Kevlar steel-knuckle, it still hurt like crazy when he made contact with the robot's face. The force of the blow knocked the mask it wore askew, which seemed to anger it, so the natural response was to somehow cause a fist to come out of the dirt and hit Peters in the chin, knocking him senseless. His vision was blurry, and he saw it grab Catherine and shout to a blue-armored being. Peters staggered to his feet and said,
"I told you not to touch her you stupid son of a-oof!"
He was knocked suddenly off his feet by a powerful jet of water coming from the hands of the blue robot. All of a sudden, they stiffened up and dropped. There was no sound, but the EMP had taken out their mechanical components, and as far as Peters knew, their only components. This was a great relief to Peters, he had survived, he now had two prisoners safe in his control, and Catherine was alive.
He looked around the blasted field and saw no standing Marines. He was shocked. He thought they had put up a better fight. The only human he saw standing was the Corpsman, he had set off the EMP.
"Sir, they're not dead!" The Corpsman shouted.
Peters sprinted over to his location. "What do you mean they're not dead?"
"Just that sir, the robots didn't use lethal force like those savages with the spiky balls did back there. Looks like most of the guys are unconscious."
Peters sighed with relief. One by one, he roused the remaining Marines. He helped Davis to his feet and said, "Did you seriously attempt to die?"
"Sir no sir!" He shouted back to him.
Peters almost smiled, and then applied titanium handcuffs to two of the downed robots, and dragged them off to the shuttles.

Derian was absolutely furious. He had scared off the Bone Hunters, and then was attacked by these pale, red blooded, creatures. He hadn't used killing force as to preserve the Toa Code, and then when he and Lairika had attempted to begin healing a severely wounded female, he was again assaulted the male creature who seemed to be in charge. And now this. It seemed that all of his armor and mechanical components were frozen in place, like the mask a Makuta was said to have used in Karda Nui against the Toa Nuva. So they were allied with Makuta! There was no other explanation. He was being dragged into a small, cylindrical, metal vehicle, along with the few surviving creatures, and felt it rise into the sky. He was furious.

Peters watched the two prisoners as the EMP blast wore off. The black armored one looked at him with a gaze of pure hatred. Peters found this strange and unnerving since robots couldn't feel emotion, could they? He shook his head and sat down on a chair that he had pulled up to face the robots, with a small table between them.
"Can you understand what I'm saying?" Peters asked.
The slimmer blue armored one raised and eyebrow and said something in a foreign language. Peters shook his head and replied,
"I'll take that as a no."
The Corporal who had used the translation device to find the name of the village called "Tesara" walked up and said,
"Sir, the device has collected enough written and spoken dialogue from the battle. It now has their language."
Peters nodded, took the device, and set it in the small table between him and the robots. He pressed a button and said,
"Can you understand me now?" The black one said in a quizzical voice, "How is it that you speak Matoran? Do you work for the Makuta?" Peters pointed to the device on the table.
"I have a few questions for you two robots, number one-"
"ROBOTS?!?" The black one exploded. "Is that why you took us? You wish to mass produce us like the Nekktan? We are certainly not robots, only part mechanical. The rest of us is purely biological."
Peters was taken aback at this. "So you're like a cyborg?"
"Cyborg?"
"A cyborg, half mechanical half biological."
"Precisely," the black one replied. "We think, we feel, we live. And now you have us. Any more simple-minded questions you want to ask?"
Peters pondered this, and then realized that in a small shuttle floating in the void of space, everyone heard that these were not robots.
"My apologies," Peters said. "My name is First Lieutenant John Peters, United North American Marine Corps. Who are you?"
The slim blue armored one now spoke, and her voice distinguishing her as a female. "I am Lairika, Toa of Water. My teammate over here is Derian, Toa of Earth."
Peters tried to clear his head before saying,
"I have two questions. One, what do you mean by teammate? And two, what is a, "Toa of Earth," and "Toa of Water"?"
"A Toa," Lairika said, "Is a being given great power by the Great Spirit, we protect the Matoran and all others who cannot defend themselves. As a Toa of Water, I control water. From the rain to the ocean, I can create and control it."
"Let me guess, Derian here can control dir- sorry, earth."
"Yes. And to answer your other question, most Toa are in teams of usually six, each of the six having a different elemental power. There are around 60 Toa now; although our numbers have grown a bit," She said.
"So how long have you had these powers of yours? Were you born with them, or did you reach maturity before receiving them?" "What do you mean by "Reaching maturity"?" Peters looked around a bit and said,
"Uh, well, you know, that time around your teenage years…You know, get taller and stuff," Peters was now extremely uncomfortable.
"Get taller? I've always been this tall, and I've always had my powers." Derian said.
"So you were born like this? If you don't mind me asking, what powers did your parents have?"
"Parents?"
Peters shook his head, now he was just confused.
"Never mind, look, I need to take you to my planet so we can question you a bit more, okay? I obviously can't take you to the planet we just left; I and my Marines would get mobbed." The two Toa looked to each other and nodded.
"Okay," Derian said, "We'll go, but the first chance we get; we're going back to Bara Magna."
Peters nodded and said, "Of course. I only hope we can repair this misunderstanding, maybe make an alliance between our planets, huh?"
Lairika nodded, seeming more level headed than Derian and said,
"I agree, the Bone Hunters were not the best way to meet us. Perhaps we can talk to your leader?"
"I'll see what I can do, but now we'll leave for Earth."
The portal appeared in front of them, ready to take them to Earth. There was a flash of light, and then nothing.
