Description
Walking along, through a canyon so very far away, a slight bit of light caught my eye. It was gold and soft and beamed from a hole in the canyon wall. My head went in, my eyes went up, and off I went through the rabbit hole...Comments would be much appreciated. I am not sure if it is too dark or not. I was going for mystery, but I may have just left too little detail.
This is a 12-image composite for focus blending and accurate exposure.

I don't know, but I think the details are nice, you have a wide range of color, and the upper part of the picture gives a feeling of a rotation, kind of movement... am I right?

I'd say you got the image you wanted with this Β Not too dark for the details to show I don't think and nothing blown outΒ in the highlights that I can see.Β

I have no idea.Β Somehow the water formed a whirlpool that expanded an existing crack I think.

Very cool shot that you've found and way to process something with such a difference in lighting. However, I think that the centered frame doesn't work quite as well as it should for this instance (IMHO). It looks like an octopus eye of some sorts and I think that if you could slightly lighten the bottom left portion of the ring closest to you, you could perceive A) more detail in that area B) more color and C) a possible mind trick where it looks like a close up of something else. I have my monitor set to US printing standards and nothing on my monitor is too dark to see anything. But I do feel like some color is lost with the dark edges. Overall, I wish I was there with you and what a truly amazing find. Keep it up!

Thanks for the comments, Jacob. I lightened the bottom portion a bit and cropped the right to focus the eye on the sky opening. Hope it is more in tune with what you were saying. Are you gonna be out and about much this summer? Would be cool to link up one of these days.

The adjustments look terrific. And as for this summer, I don't know if I'll be out nearly as much as I was last summer just due to the fact I have a new born. I'm trying to get a job in Basalt Colorado permanently, however. It doesn't look too great. But I am hoping to get out a least once on the west slope this mid-July for alpine flowers and out in Utah perhaps for fall colors. Does any of those times work out with your schedule? Where are you planning to be this summer? I would definitely like to meet up and shoot together.

Congrats on the newborn! Much of my plans changed so I'm not doing as much as I planned. The one trip that might work, though - I'm going to shoot Shiprock in NM during the monsoons in hopes of some lightning. It will be like 4 days around July 15th. Let me know if that interests you at all. Peace man.

What an inspiring image.
Amazing how smooth the walls are and how almost completely straight the tunnel is.
Nature is an amazing thing eh?
Nice capture, nice lighting, its kinda strange, as it feels like your looking Down... but it starts dark and get lighter, rather than the other way. Disorientating.

Thank you. Nature is the greatest artist. I have no idea how this formed. It was just there, in the side of the wall, waiting to be looked through. That's funny that you feel like you're looking down. I feel like I'm laying on my back looking up.

Not a bad idea. I'll give it a shot. Maybe not totally square, but I think you're right that the right side is too dominant.

You could try brightening the sandstone walls to see if it makes a difference. Maybe add a bit of "glow" to the outer edges near the sky?
