gorgeous work but why the horrible name ?

Comacold In reply to Mahado07 [2008-12-10 10:20:44 +0000 UTC]

Because many horses are enslaved by man and have to serve them instead of running free like their ancestors. I'd like to quote a deviant who gave a comment under another painting but which applies to both in my mind: '"Free as a Horse" is depicting a lovely animal wearing bridle, bit and reigns... not particularly free.' That's also the case here.

Zetsubou-Ninja In reply to Comacold [2011-05-04 02:45:41 +0000 UTC]

i Have to say though to ever call a horse a slave is more of an insult to the horse than an insight to a problem.

Where in all the world is nobility found without conceit? Where is there friendship without envy? Where is beauty without vanity? Here one finds gracefulness coupled with power, and strength tempered with gentleness. A constant servant, yet no slave. A fighter, ever without hostility. Our history was written on his back. We are his heirs. But he is his own heritage, the horse.

---H.H.Isenbart, "The Kingdom of the Horse"---

Pretty quotation but you should think about it more instead of just agreeing with it. The guy who wrote that perceives the horse as he does but there are people with a different, less friendly view. This picture was aimed to raise awareness of abuse. The title is not meant to insult but to provoke thought. In other words: I'm not saying a horse is a slave, I'm saying that there are people who perceive it as such.

I understand your point - i was wondering whether you were actually referring to an abused horse, I'd not have put free as a horse if i drew that creature wearing riding gear or anything else for that matter, rather strange that someone would draw something where the animal is 'chained' as such.

Do you have horses ?? Usually most of the DA artists who draw horses keep them as well. What do you think about zoos and circuses ?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Comacold In reply to Mahado07 [2008-12-10 15:07:26 +0000 UTC]

No, I don't own a horse, I couldn't even afford one. And zoos... well, I don't like them to be frank, most animals I saw in them were either kept in bad conditions or behaved strangely, like they were mentally ill or something. Maybe I visited the wrong zoos. I wouldn't have anything against them if the conditions were good and animals happy. Same goes to circuses. And I don't mind people having horses as long as they are happy and not abused or sth

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mahado07 In reply to Comacold [2008-12-10 15:32:22 +0000 UTC]

I don't like zoos or circuses either. 99 % of zoos are not kept in the correct way and circuses are ghastly. their training methods are horrible truly terrible from beatings to starvation.
you're very right, the animals start to mentally retract sometimes, well its either that or they start becoming really violent. I've seen enough of this behaviour to hate zoos and circuses! If they (animals) have to be observed, the proper place is a sanctuary, you can still see the animals but the conditions are all natural - the zoos and circuses give the excuse that they provide entertainment and educate the public as well, a sanctuary would do the exam same *obviously no one should be asking to see a tiger go through a hoop on fire, where in nature would you see something like that ??* but that's my view.
It's really sad, a good enough part of the globe's population don't know the proper way to care for their 'ets' and half the time they give a gift to someone without thinking whether the person has the know how or the means to support the creatures. vets are damn expensive. I've got 5 rescued exotic parrots and when something happens to one of them it usually costs me anywhere from $50 - $300 for treatment and care. If i didn't have the resources (lol and i work like crazy just to keep up with the payments) i'd never take in anything. thanks for your views.

I envy that you have parrots and a proffesional vet to take care of them! When my parrot was dying I took it to a vet and he asked me "What's this?". What an idiot! I wanted to say "A hamster!" but instead I told him it was a budgie and explained what the problem was. He examined the animal and said that in a few days it will be ok. And I believed him! How stupid I was! The budgie died later that day and I left it all alone >_< I can't forgive myself for that to this day.
It's good to hear that you care for your animals so much. The world needs more such people.

Mahado07 In reply to Comacold [2008-12-13 13:55:12 +0000 UTC]

hey hon, well it's not really an enviable position to be in. If you have a creature an you can afford to take it to a good vet then that's great. if you're like me, basically take in anything that needs help then you're asking yourself to be shot in the foot, I'm very emotional and really want to maul the people who hurt whatever it is I'm taking in.

I am absolutely feeling your pain here and would feel the same thing, I'd never be able to forgive myself either though your budgie probably sensed you loved him/her alot. I am truly sorry hon - all the creatures that died on me when i was not home, i feel like a huge hole in my soul. I work from home now so if something happens, I'm here to take care of it. I saw a show on oprah a few months ago where they showed a rescue centre called Angel's Gate. I can't tell you how i bawled when i saw that. The love she gives them is obvious but the pitiful and horribly soul tearing state those creatures are in makes me want to physically rip the offenders from head to toe. They are bloody barbarians and God if you're listening, make them suffer so much that they remember what they did every second of every minute of their time in hell. I sound like a loon now but that is just hateful.

I rescued a bird from a pet shop *fell in love with it way before i took it away* and it died on me 1 week later, the first night i brought the pied tiel home she wouldnt eat, i tried everything from seed to peanut butter since i felt her belly and found her bones were protruding so much so that she was starving, i looked at her face and I burst out crying. those sick shits at the pet shop can't care less for the lives they throw away to anyone who has enough cash to pay for it. i took her to the emergency vet that night but aside form crop feeding her, no help there. i took her to my avian vet the next day asap, she examined her and said whatever illness she has is chronic and they needed to do more tests i said ok, do whatever is necessary and left her there, i visited everyday while she lived. she became stronger for the first 2 days but died a few days later. they did an autopsy on her and it was found out she had been sick for a long time. they say birds hide illnesses well but if that damn petshop had actually been doing what it said ie our stock is examined weekly by a certified vet' they would have caught this earlier. Regardless, every abused/neglect case I've taken in regarding any official selling places, i keep.t his is for future reference when i use my position as director of an environmental body to point out the everyday situations these creatures are placed in, no one monitoring where they go to, who they go to or whether that person has the knowledge and resources to look after the animal in question. I am hoping that when we take this to court, we can start off something where the actual laws of the country will change. we will have to send the bill through parliament but crossing fingers this happens, would save alot of unfortunate things happening to these creatures who don't deserve it.

Hmm, could be but I still draw more often than paint I use watercolours once in a blue moon because I don't have much time for my art and I find drawing less time consuming.
Ok, I have doubts if what I have just written is even relevant... XP

Unless you really look closely at the thumb, it, indeed, looks like a photo. Well, you already know that it is a painting so it wouldn't look the same to you. You are too familiar with it. I know horses very well as I raise Arabians and have ridden and trained most breeds of equines. At first glance, it does look like a photo. That just testifies to your talent as an artist and a painter.
