Two humans appeared not too long ago.
The oldest one looked to be an adult, having wavy golden blonde hair, her eyes a mixture of green, blue, and grey, lay hidden behind the square frames of her glasses. Jeans covered her legs as a pair of sneakers covered her feet, her hands stuffed into the pockets of her denim jacket that rests over a forest green tank top to keep them warm, a crystal embedded cross hanging carefully around her neck.
The other was a child, having short brown hair. They wore a blue shirt with purple strips, a pair of jeans, and some sneakers. Thing about them, though...
They had soulless red eyes.
My brother and I had met hem outside of Snowdin. The older one seemed nice, sweet almost. But the younger one...
I didn’t trust one bit.
I was walking through the trees just outside Snowdin when I heard my brother’s voice. Glancing over, I noticed him, but stop when I realize that the humans were with him, ducking behind a tree.
“Papyrus?”
“I, Papyrus, welcome you with open arms!”
“What are they doing?”
The older human reaches out her arm to the younger human, though stops, retracting her hand as she looks away, tears in her eyes.
It happened too fast.
The glint of a knife. The strike from the younger human.
They had killed Papyrus.
No-!
I watched as Papyrus stood there, unmoving.
“W-well that’s not what I expected...” His head falls off his body. “But... St... Still! I believe in you! You can do a little bit better! Even if you don’t think so! I... I promise...”
His body turns to dust.
“NO!”
The younger human chuckles as the older human runs to where Papyrus just stood, collapsing to her knees. “Nononononono! No! PLEASE GOD NO!”
“I’m surprised, sister. You didn’t even try to stop me this time.”
The older human stiffens, her eyes wide. I can tell she’s afraid.
Sister, huh? That’s interesting.
She scoops up the dust into her hands. “Y-you wouldn’t have l-listened to me a-anyway...”
The younger human chuckles, a soft glow forms around the older female’s chest, though soon dies down as her eyes widen in surprise.
“I supposed you’ve learned by now, haven’t you, Sarah?” The younger human roughly grabs the older human’s wrist, pulling her to her feet as they lead her away. “Come on, we have more business elsewhere.”
The older human – Sarah – glances to the tree line as I duck out of view, her gaze pleading, though quickly looks back ahead. It’s as if she knew I was there.
I run out from behind the trees, falling to my knees where Papyrus once stood. All that’s left is his scarf. “Pap-Papyrus?” I carefully pick up his scarf. “Brother?” I can feel tears form in my eye sockets, soon falling down my face. No... NO!
I bring the scarf to my face as the tears steadily fall. I’m sorry, brother... I’m sorry... that I wasn’t here with you... I pull it down, looking up to the two humans, my gaze settling on the younger human, my gaze turning into a glare. That little brat!
I look over to Sarah. Everything about her was completely different from the young human. She seemed kind, compassionate. My gaze hardens. I need to get her away from them... She’s in danger.
I wrap Papyrus’ scarf around my neck, pulling up my hood as I follow the two. I watch as the younger human kills everyone they meet.
Sarah has long since given up trying to stop the younger one. She looked... broken, tortured. It’s like all determination she had just vanished.
They had been running from Undyne for a while now. They were crossing a couple of bridges when someone calls out to them.
“Yo!”
Sarah’s eyes widen as she turns around, looking at the Monster Kid. “Oh God, please no...”
The younger human glances to her before turning around, looking to the kid. The kid slowly walks towards them.
“What are you doing, kid? Get outta there!”
“Yo. Undyne told me to stay away from you. She said you... You hurt a lot of people.”
Sarah looks away, rubbing her arms.
“...But, yo, that’s not true, right!? ...”
The younger human looks away.
“...Yo... Why won’t you answer me? A... a... and what’s with that weird expression...?”
The younger human grins darkly, stepping forward to the kid, making him step back, now looking scared. “Oh... Oh man...Man, my h-hearts pounding right out of my chest...”
“Get away from them... just run...” I can barely hear Sarah whisper.
“...what would Undyne do? ...” The kid stands tall, trying not to show fear. “Yo... Y-you’d b-better st-stop r-right where you are... Cause if you w-wanna hurt anyone else... you’re... You’re gonna have to go through me, first. A... a... and...”
“So be it.”
The younger human’s red soul appears on their chest as they take out their knife. “In my way.” They run forward, Sarah covering her mouth as they swing their knife.
The kid gets pushed out of the way, Undyne taking hit instead, the knife slicing through her armour. The kid looks to Undyne, guilt reflecting on his face. “Undyne... You’re... You’re hurt...”
Undyne gives a reassuring smile. “Hurt? It’s nothing. Next time, listen when I tell you to leave, okay?”
“Undyne... I...”
Undyne’s gaze hardens as she looks to the younger human. “I’ll take care of this! Get out of here!”
The kid takes a few steps away, then pauses. Glancing back, he runs off. Undyne chuckles weakly, lowering her head. “...Heh... “It’s nothing”...” Her body begins to fade. “No... S-somehow, with just one hit... I’m already... Already... D... damn it... Papyrus... Alphys... Asgore... Just like that, I... I’ve failed you.” Her entire body fades, but soon comes back. “No... My body... It feels like it’s splitting apart. Like any instant... I’ll scatter into a million pieces. But... Deep, deep in my soul. There’s a burning feeling I can’t describe. A burning feeling that WON’T let me die. This isn’t just about monsters anymore, is it? If you get past me, you’ll... You’ll destroy them all, won’t you? Monsters... Humans... Everyone... Everyone’s hopes. Everyone’s dreams. Vanquished in an instant.”
Undyne smiles. “But I WON’T let you do that. Right now, everyone in the world...” She looks up to the young human. “I can feel their hearts beating as one. And we all have ONE goal. To defeat YOU. Human. No, WHATEVER you are. For the sake of the whole world... I, Undyne, will strike you down!”
A light shine from Undyne, soon fading. What she turns into makes me blink in surprise. “You’re gonna have to try a little harder than THAT.”
Sarah runs out, putting herself between the human and Undyne, spreading her arms as she glares at the young human, a slight spark of determination resurfacing as her snow white soul appears on her chest, shining brightly. “STOP IT, CHARA! HAVEN’T YOU DONE ENOUGH ALREADY!??!”
Undyne looks to Sarah, shocked. “Human, what are you doing???”
Sarah looks back to Undyne. “Something I should have done a while ago.”
“You’re gonna get yourself killed!”
“I don’t care.” She glares back at Chara. “Frisk! I know you’re still in there somewhere! I know that somewhere in there my baby sibling still exists!” Tears form in her eyes, her voice pleading, as if she’s desperate. “PLEASE!!!! YOU HAVE TO FIGHT AGAINST THEM!!!! YOU’RE NOT A PUPPET, YOU’RE A CHILD!!!! A HUMAN CHILD!!!!! DON’T LET THEM TURN YOU INTO SOMETHING YOU’RE NOT!!!”
A smirk appears on Chara’s face. “You really are an idiot, aren’t you?”
“W-what?”
Chara runs forward, slashing their knife.
NO!
Sarah simply stands there, eyes wide with horror as she slowly brings her hand up to her chest. Blood stains her clothes as it covers her hand, slowly dripping from her mouth. “F... F... Fr..... isk....” She falls to her knees, collapsing onto the floor.
Chara smirks at her. Undyne stares at Sarah before glaring at Chara, anger overflowing. “THAT’S IT!”
Undyne lifts up her hand, sending spears down at Chara. Chara dodges, Undyne rushing to them as their fight begins.
I quickly teleport myself to Sarah’s body, carefully picking her up in my arms. “Oh God, please don’t be dead...” I teleport us to a safe distance, sitting down on the ground while setting Sarah in my lap, gently cradling her in my arms.
Her chest rose and fell, signalling that she was still breathing. Her soul quivered, as if it was using all of its energy to keep itself from shattering.
“C’mon, kid... Open your eyes!”
“Nnngh...”
She weakly opens her eyes, looking up at me. “S.... Sans...?”
I let out a sigh of relief. “Yeah, I’m here kid. Don’t close your eyes again, okay?”
“U... Un.... dyne...”
“She’s alright, she... she can take care of it.”
Sarah weakly shakes her head, turning her head to watch the battle, or at least, watch Undyne finally get cut down.
“Damn it... So even THAT power... It wasn’t enough...? ...Heh... Heheheh...” Undyne smiles. “If you... If you think I’m gonna give up hope, you’re wrong. ‘Cause I’ve... Got my friends behind me. Alphys told me that she would watch me fight you... And if anything went wrong, she would... evacuate everyone. By now she’s called Asgore and told him to absorb the six human souls.”
Her body begins to melt. “And with that power... This world will live on...!” She turns to dust.
Chara chuckles. “You shouldn’t have underestimated me.” They turn around, walking away.
“Un... Undyne!”
Sarah reaches her hand out, tears in her eyes as I try to keep her in place. “W-woah! Easy kid, you shouldn’t be moving around!”
“Undyne!!!”
A bright glow shines from her soul, likes it’s calling out to something. Another light responds.
“What-?”
A green soul soon glides to Sarah as she cups her hands together, the soul landing on her hands as she gently cradles it.
“Undyne... S... safe... I’m... here...” She carefully rests the soul against her chest. “It’s... it’s okay now... Y-you’re... you’re going to live...”
Her soul shines brightly, the green soul nearing, until it just... disappears into her soul.
“Kid... did you just... absorb the soul???”
Sarah chuckles weakly. Lifting one hand, she clings onto my hoodie, using her other hand to show me her soul. Her snow white soul shines, three other smaller souls huddled around it, like her soul was protecting them somehow. The souls were orange, purple, and the green one that she just absorbed.
“C-couldn’t... couldn’t let them... d-die...” A pained expression makes its way into her face as she clings to me the best she can with barely any energy. “U-Undyne... is... i-is she...?”
“She’s still in a state of stasis... My child, are you alright?”
The new voice surprises me.
“F-fine... H-how... is she...?”
“She’s fine. Human, you should let Toriel look at your wound! It doesn’t look good!”
My eyes widen as I look up. P-Papyrus!?!
Papyrus kneels in front of us, watching Sarah with concern. Another monster was standing beside him, probably Toriel.
Tears form in my eyes as I stare him. It... it can’t be...
Papyrus takes notice of my stare. “Hey, Sarah... why is he staring at me like that?”
Sarah chuckles weakly. “H-he can s-see and hear you right n-now...”
Papyrus’ expression lights up. “REALLY!?!” He waves. “Hi Sans! I’m part of Sarah’s soul now! She absorbed me after Chara killed me so I wouldn’t die!!!”
I blink. “Sh-she...”
Toriel smiles. “The child holds much compassion for her to help us like this.”
“Nnnnnngh... What... what’s going on...?”
“UNYDNE!”
“P-Papyrus!?!?! Wha- ACK!”
Sarah giggles lightly as Papyrus hugs the confused Undyne, who had just appeared, Toriel walking over to greet her.
Sarah sighs, closing her eyes. “I... I accidentally a-absorbed Tori’s s-soul when she... she d-died. It was... confusing a-at first... I-I thought I was going mad. Sh-she explained what had h-happened to me... s-so... When Papyrus died... I-I tried again... I... wanted to save them... I was d-determined. S-so... I absorbed them... N-now...” She opens her eyes, giving a smile. “Th-they’re alive... i-in me...”
“Why? Why would you save them? You don’t even know them...”
“Th-the most p-precious thing.... A-anyone could h-have... i-is their life.”
The most precious thing...
I carefully cradle her closer to my chest. “You barely have yours.”
“I... st-still have it...”
Undyne walks to us, kneeling down to look at Sarah. “You... absorbed me... you saved me.” She chuckles lightly. “Guess I should thank you, huh?” She studies her, noticing her wound. “You’re hurt pretty bad... That was a dumb thing to do! You could have died!”
“I didn’t...”
Undyne clenches her fist. “That kid...” She stands, spears appearing around her. “I SWEAR TO GOD WHEN I GET MY HANDS ON THEM-!”
Sarah clutches her head, her breathing speeding up as pain courses through her. “No-! St-stop it!”
“Undyne stop it! You’re hurting her!”
Undyne blinks, looking to Sarah. Sighing, her shoulders relax as the spears disappearing, Sarah slowly relaxing in my arms. “Sorry...”
Toriel kneels beside Sarah. “Here, let me ease your pain.” Toriel gently places her hand on Sarah’s wound, a soft glow coming from her as she uses her magic. “Child, you should have been more careful! They could have killed you without any remorse!”
Sarah sighs contently as her wound slowly closes. “But... th-they didn’t...” She looks to Toriel. “That m-means Frisk is st-still in there... still... fighting...”
“You’re talking about the kid that’s killing everything? They REALLY seem to be fighting hard.”
“You can’t see the souls, c-can you?” She sighs. “When Frisk and I c-climbed Mount Ebott... There w-were only two souls... mine a-and theirs. Then we fell down the hole into the Ruins. W-when we woke up... there were three. Mine, Frisk’s, and Chara’s. Chara...” She pauses, bring up a hand she clutches her chest, her soul hidden in her hand. “...I’m not sure what they are. They’re... They’re not a human. But... they’re not a monster. ...I think... “demon” suits them. They took control of Frisk... they’re the one whose been killing everyone. Frisk... Frisk has been trying so hard to fight them... to regain control.”
“Child... are... are you saying there are two souls residing in the same body?”
Sarah nods. “Yes.” She thinks for a moment. “I... have been h-holding off on my reset. I would’ve reset the timeline b-by now, but... as l-long as Chara is i-in control... if I r-reset...” She looks down. “...Everything will repeat.”
“Right, so we take down the kid!”
“No! Nonononono!” Sarah takes in a breath. “We need to find a w-way to help Frisk gain c-control again. Once th-they’re in control, even if it’s just for a f-few minutes, I can reset... Chara w-won’t be able t-to follow us... E-everyone will be alive, a-and...” She smiles. “And we can do the timeline the way we want to do things. M-maybe even help you guys escape.”
“Escape? Like to the surface???”
“...Yes Papyrus. Help you get to the surface.” She lets go of her chest, her hand falling to her side. “Right n-now... Frisk probably believes Chara killed me. They’ll b-be trying harder to g-gain control again so th-they can reset the timeline... s-so they can get me back.” She closes her eyes for a moment before opening them, holding out her hand. “Y-you guys can sleep now. I-I’ll be fine, a-and you should recover y-your energy.”
Toriel gently takes her hand. “Child, are you sure...?”
Sarah nods. “I’ll be fine.”
Toriel studies her for a moment before looking up to me. “Sans, was it? Can you promise me something? Promise me that you will look after her... that you will protect her. I believe... that she may be the only hope monsters have left...”
“I, uh...”
“Sans, please!” Papyrus looks at me. “None of us want to see her get hurt, or worse! She’s already been through so much, so... please... look after her. Do it for me, okay?”
I hate making promises. But, this was my brother asking me, and the way they were all looking at me...
They seem to care about this girl a lot.
Letting out a breath, I give a nod. “Yeah, I promise.”
Toriel smiles. “Thank you.”
Papyrus gently puts his hand on Sarah’s shoulder. “Be careful, alright?”
Undyne puts her hand on Sarah’s head. “We’ll be here if you need us, punk. So don’t be afraid to call us, okay?!?!”
They glow for a moment then disappear, Sarah’s hand falling to her side.
I look down to her. She seemed exhausted, looking like she was trying to staying awake.
“Hey, you should sleep. You look exhausted.”
She looks up to me. “F-Frisk-!”
“Don’t worry, I’ll keep an eye on the kid, and I won’t leave you behind. I promised to protect you, remember?”
She chuckles lightly, closing her eyes. “I’m not the one... that needs protecting...”
Her breathing becomes slow and steady as sleep takes hold. Not the one that needs protecting...? I sigh, carefully standing as I gentle carry her in my arms.
This kid was... odd. Different.
It felt... nice? Just... holding her.
Maybe I’m going crazy.
Or maybe...
I’ve found something worth caring about.
Something worth protecting.
