Description
Light, everywhere one turned there were lights that scraped the once blue skies now grey with clouds of unknown gases that the masses feared to breathe. That's what the ones that live below the skies see anyway. A civilization lost in time and hurtful action. Actions that creatures once called Man did to a planet that never deserved any wrongs. A planet that once held so much life and promise, but that was years ago, no one could really remember those times anymore. No one knew what clean air tasted like, what green grass looked like. All they had were pictures in books. Books that Man now felt were obsolete. Why would one need a book when they have the images that fly past one's eyes, transporting information straight into the brain? Obsolete pieces of barbaric equipment. The digital era was just beginning.Discoveries happened, often making men and their lives obsolete, but for an odd reason they continued. There was no longer need for factory workers, but that was fine. It was a dangerous job that not many enjoyed. There was no longer need for accounts, but that was fine. Why let a man go through out money when a computer did it faster and made fewer mistakes? There was no longer need for lawyers, but that was fine. Machines knew the law better then humans did anyway. There was no longer need for doctors, but that was fine. Why worry about shaking hands when machines have precision? Man became obsolete. Man called it a scientific breakthrough.
That was when it happened the smog that slowly traveled over the proverbial sunrise. Slowly the planet was affected by all these new cold objects that ran amok with her land. Her land slowly became barren, but of course the humans had a solution for that. They started to find new ways to grow what they needed without the use of the now useless soil beneath their feet. Natural animals started to die, but that would never be a problem for Man. They started to clone the animals they ate, ignoring the dangers in duplicate DNA. They would never have anything dangerous in their food, not with their science, but this time there was a problem.
There was small virus amongst the thousand of calves they brought to life, and when one recreates that a thousand times it changes until finally something small becomes something large. This new virus attached itself to the young meat, but before man could see how it affected the poor creature it was brought to the slaughter to feed man. People ate this tainted beef, and people died. Hundreds of thousands lost their lives in countless countries. Man, Woman, and Child all the same. There seemed to be no cure for this horrible plague, but Man would not stand for that.
With hopeless efforts they created countless failures, not just for them, but for the planet. Where do you think all that waste went? One can only think about one life ending problem at a time you see, so man forgot about the wounded planet. Slowly yet again another problem surfaced, and that was the failing quality of the air that surrounded millions. Now if the virus left you alive the toxins wouldn't. Slowly but surely the survivors of the horrible virus grew ill once again, but one never knows. There may be a few that would be able to suffer longer then others, to live. Now knowing nothing else Man did what it always dreamed of, traveling beyond their planet, but not all the way. The cost of allowing every man on the planet to leave would be impossible, so only those that could pay could leave. If you had the money, but were infected, they'd kill you.
With their new found abandonment they traveled upwards to build colonies, but what kept the poor souls below from doing the same? Man had an answer for that too.
They created something they called Fragments. They were just another creation of their hideous cloning experiments, but this time they used humans. Infected humans. These fragments were odd creatures, holding the ability to stop those that tried to disobey the orders of those above them. Creatures that looked exactly like their infected human parents, but with the ability to breathe the infected air. Creatures that could only live so long until their systems just stopped working. Yes, it was the Digital era indeed.

My breath danced in front of me like the demented clouds above me. It was rather cold, colder then it normally was, and I couldn't help but let my eyes travel upwards. Up towards the countless lights, the countless humans that had left us behind. Created us, and left us behind. I sighed, my breath doing an erratic turn in front of me, and let my feet carry me away. It wasn't like I had anywhere to go really, just a place to walk to. A place that no one yet had discovered, not even me. A place that would be far far away from this cursed place that Man once called their home. If it had always been this dark and dismal I don't know why they would. Death seemed to follow me everywhere these days, but what could I really expect. One could only breathe this foul tasting shit for so long without just giving up.
Sobbing reached my ears again and another sighed escaped my lips. No doubt another child had lost a mother or a brother. A father or a sister. It was sad really. These poor souls were humans too weren't they, so why not include them in a life that they so deserve? Because they were ill. How many times had I heard those calm words being whispered into my ears? I don't even think I could count that high really. It didn't seem fair though. There were children here that were crying. People that didn't even look sick. But they were ill, it was just hiding. Lying in wait in their systems until it could strike and reek havoc on their bodies. It just wasn't fair.
I had been told I felt like this for one sole reason, I was young. Truthfully I didn't know how young I was, or really what I looked like, just that I had near black hair that could sometimes look a strange teal colour if I managed to get under the right sickly sunbeam. I also knew that I didn't understand like the others. Maybe I was just young? Some of the others had seemed perfectly fine with what was going on, with what we were forced to do. We were created for. That was why I didn't stay with the others, I just couldn't accept that. The fact that we were just created to walk around a barren land and watch people suffer. To make sure that they would never escape to a world that was even the slightest bit brighter then this one. If I was a young fool then I never wanted to grow up. I never wanted to grow into a cynical old creature that could do nothing but sit back and laugh at those that slowly bled to death. At those who watched in horror as their parents or siblings leaked until they died. I wanted to stay young forever. It was a blissful thought, a thought that may actually happen. I had seen us die before, it was almost like falling asleep, but I doubted it was as peaceful. They all looked so younger, younger then some of the bloody human remains I had found, so was I really that young? Was I younger then all of them? Would I die still looking so young with a look of peaceful sleep upon my unknown face?
I shuddered a bit, if it was from the strange chill or my somber thoughts I don't know, and let my eyes travel upwards again. I hated that colour. Grey just seemed to be a sickening colour, a colour that lacked almost everything. It lacked the purity of the white I had grown around, and it lacked the anger and the fear of black. I'd rather the sky be black then a constantly moving grey. A colour that I had never once even laid my eyes on until I had been sent to this cursed place. A small part of me wondered if they had made this colour. If they had made it from the science experiments I had heard about. We weren't told much about the day's man was still on Earth but it was something I had always thought about. I heard, once upon a time, that the Earth's sky used to be a beautiful blue. It was the lightest blue anyone had ever seen. But then again I had heard that from a dieing woman that swore we had a giant glowing rock floating in the sky. She had called it the Moon and it took a lot of energy not to laugh at the thought.
Finally the sobbing stopped and I let my eyes travel downwards. I knew why the sounds had come from, could have gone to the child's side, but my feet wouldn't take me in that direction. What could I do? I'm sorry dear but Mommy had to die? No, I doubt I would have been able to say that. I wouldn't have been able to look down at that child, her mother's blood smeared acrossed her small body, and lied to her face. I ran a weary hand through my tangled hair and sighed. I needed to stop day dreaming.
