Description
October 1973, Apollo 19 sits in low lunar orbit. A modified Lunar Module, Surveyor and Command and Service Module America are seen. After Apollo 20's cancellation to make room for Skylab, two more missions were planned, Apollos 18 and 19. However, after Apollo 13's failure, 18 and 19 were put on thin ice. However, an interesting proposal helped keep the two alive. 18 would be the ultimate landing, spending longer on the surface than any other mission, while 19 would stay 2 weeks in lunar orbit mapping its surface and taking pictures of previous landing sites.
LM-13 Challenger would land unmodified in April 1973, while LM-14, bluntly named Surveyor by its crew would have its legs and ascent systems removed, replaced with additional life support and other systems needed to map the Moon. After spending 14 days in lunar orbit, Apollo 19's CSM would undock to return home, leaving Surveyor in orbit to continue its mission uncrewed.
This is based on the lunar survey missions that were at least considered in real life, although I'm pretty sure they wouldn't use their last lunar mission for it.
My first post of 2024! Some notes: In real life, LM-12, for Apollo 17, was named Challenger. What its name is in this timeline? idk. Also in real life, LM-13 is preserved, although here it's on the surface of the moon, and LM-14 was never completed in real life.
