When and how did you get started in Cosplay?
Costuming has always been a thing in my family from my grandmother the home Economics teacher teaching my mother to sew, and then my mother making Halloween and Renaissance Faire costumes for herself and my siblings before she taught me the ways of the sewing machine. In about 2010, I got into anime, then anime club, then I was introduced to cosplay. I realized that I could expand my powers of creation past Halloween and Ren Faires, went to Dragoncon 2012 as my first convention, and I’ve been hooked on cosplay ever since.

What was your first cosplay?
My first cosplay ever was a Winry costume I borrowed from a friend from Anime Club for my high school Homecoming Parade. The first costume and first major prop I ever made on my own was Jack Frost from Rise of the Guardians.

What was the most difficult Character?
I think they’ve all been difficult in their own way and every one of them has presented a new challenge to overcome. But I think the hardest was definitely Sailor Uranus. I had so much support from my cosplay friends and online resources to get past all the hang ups to get the pieces together and make the costume fully interchangeable. Then the sword was solid hours at the dremel to get the shape the way I wanted it. Even now, I find myself not completely satisfied with parts of it and constantly looking for ways to improve.

What characters are you planning and type of character are you drawn to?
I’m drawn to magical girls. The characters are so infectiously positive and the costumes are the absolute cutest things. I want to do Super Sailor Moon, Sailor Venus, Sailor Star Fighter, Amulet Spade from Shugo Chara, and basically all the League of Legends Star Guardians But especially Star Guardian Lux, Ahri, and Jinx. I also want to make a quick-change Sailor Uranus transformation costume and performance skit.
I also absolutely adore doing group or partner cosplays. I strongly believe creation is collaboration and when you have a friend to work with you and inspire you to make something together it makes things that much more fun and fulfilling.
That being said my currently in the works list includes Disney’s Rapunzel, Prince Zuko, Ruby Rose (RWBY) and a Shiny Umbreon Gijinka.
The dream list includes Link, Elsa, Peter Pan, a lot of Touken Ranbu Sword Boys, Honoka, Midoriya, ...

What is your process when starting from the beginning with a new cosplay?
Research, research, research. Make a Pinterest board full of pictures of the character from the source and pictures of how other cosplayers have brought the character to life. There are so so so many hard working, talented, and generous people out there who share their pictures and tutorials for inspiration and tips. I wouldn’t have gotten anywhere without them.

Are there any helpful hints in sewing, costume design, or any other aspects of your cosplay that you discovered in doing your creations?
Never give up and never stop improving. Things will be difficult and won’t always go your way but a little determination goes a long way to getting things done. Things always take longer than you think they will. Don’t let perfectionism get in the way of getting something awesome done. When designing remember a lot of what we as cosplayers build comes from a 2D source. We’re living in a 3D world with entire fabric and craft stores full of beads and trims and cool materials. Feel free to embellish your costume to take full advantage of what 3D has to offer. I’m inspired by the costumes in the anime stage plays and musicals they produce in Japan.

Do you have a preferred brand of make up in your cosplays? And if so why?
Cosplay is actually what got me into make up in the first place! But that definitely means make up is still one of the skills I’m building up every time I cosplay. Brand wise, I’m still in the research, test, learn phase but I’ve always liked BB cream and Neutrogena to help clear my skin.

What are you listening to?
Be the One by Pandora. Opening to Kamen Rider. Spinning World by Diana Garnet.
And the entire soundtrack to every Touken Ranbu Musical ever. On repeat.

Favorite Movies?
Peter Pan 2003 Live Action
Disney, Ghibli, Marvel

Favorite Anime?
Inuyasha, Sailor Moon, Shugo Chara, Touken Ranbu, My Hero Academia

Favorite TV Shows?
Animated: Voltron, RWBY, Avatar the Last Airbender, Star Wars Rebels
The CW: Supernatural, Flash, Supergirl
JDrama: Erased, Five, Ochanomizu Rock

Is there a scene from an anime, cartoon, movie, or TV show that left a big impression on you and what was it?
Anytime the protagonist is faced with what seems like unbeatable odds and they power through to win. Those scenes, like the entirety of My Hero Academia, Little Witch Academia, Love Live, Sailor Moon, Fairy Tail, and One Piece, always inspire me.

Books?
Percy Jackson and the Olympian plus anything else by Rick Riordan
Also Peter Pan.

Games?
Legend of Zelda, Touken Ranbu, League of Legends, Mario Kart, Pokemon

Beverage?
Hot Cocoa, Throat Tea, Coffee

Fast Food/Junk Food of Choice?
Wendy’s home style chicken sandwich.

Candy Bar?
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Is that a bar? Reese’s sticks.

Favorite Breakfast Cereal?
Frosted Flakes or Oatmeal Raisin

Is there something not going on in the cosplay world that you would want to see or is there something you would want to change?
It’s my mission to bring live action anime musicals and stage plays from Japan to America. Whether that means working with conventions to invite the Japanese cast to perform as guests, or if that means starting a theatre company to produce original anime based productions I’m here for it. In the meantime, I’ll be performing skits at conventions as often as I can. Ooh, a cosplay shadow cast of an anime sounds fun!

What was your favorite toy growing up?
Actually it was appropriately the Princess and Disney character costumes my mom made me. I used to call high heeled shoes “clippy-cloppies” because of the sound they made when I walked in them.

Who is your biggest character crush and why?
Wow that list is long and fluctuates based on the time of day. At the moment it’s Kashuu Kiyomitsu from Touken Ranbu because wow he’s adorable and his musical actor Ryuji Sato is an exceptionally talented performer.

You enter a warehouse...there are dancing Ghoul Clowns
I’d want to be Jinx from League of Legends. I’d apologize for disturbing their dance game and ask if they have room for one more. If they keep coming at me I’d let them see what Pow Pow thinks of them.

Chained with a character for one year
Haruka Tennoh, Sailor Uranus. 1st thing is we could do a photo shoot from that one episode where she and Sailor Moon got chained together at the wrist by an enemy and had to work through their differences to win the day. 2nd she could teach me how to run faster and get stronger and fight better and play piano. 3rd I’d get to/have to ride with her on her motorcycle. I’d get to be a part of a romantic, flower-petals-flying-in-the-wind water color painting every time she and Michiru dramatically walk away. I’d have to learn how to do the magical anime jump and vanish trick. The biggest concern is that I’d probably be terrifically in her way when she needs to transform and her World Shaking attack could be a little rough with me in tow.

Dinner with your favorite character. One question.
I’d have dinner with Hermione and ask to borrow her time turner so I can get more things done in a day and be significantly less stressed by con crunch time.

Number one on your bucket list?
I’ve always been incredibly impressed by bilingual people so Number One on my bucket list is to be fluent and literate in Japanese so I can take advantage of the opportunities that would provide me.

What advice would you give to people getting started in cosplay?
The classic, Have Fun! Be kind and open hearted. Rise to whatever challenge you want cosplay to be for you, whether that challenge is finding the most affordable, high quality costume online, or making the entire thing yourself from scratch. Never stop improving. Find friends who share your passions and who might even introduce you to new ones. Creation is collaboration. Surround yourself with a community that inspires you and drives your passion. Hard work and the courage to persevere through fear, failure, and setbacks get things done. Have fun and show your love for fantastic things! Bring them to life in your own unique and special way!!
