“Oh, mayor! Welcome back!” smiled Isabelle as I begrudgingly shoved myself back inside town hall. She was sympathetic towards my housing situation but assured me that I’d be much happier once I had a proper roof over my head.

We finished registering me as an official resident of Place, which to me was akin to selling my soul to the devil… did I just make a terrible mistake? She then gave me a “town pass card”. “It’s like an ID card that proves you live in Place” she explained “we call it TPC for short. Later on, you should take a photo of yourself for it!” Oh god, do I? You should see my passport photo… not a pretty sight.

“All right then” Isabelle said, clapping her hands together “this wraps up just about everything we’ll need to process your move. The last thing we’d like you to participate in is a ceremony that commemorates your arrival.”

My interest peaked. Am I getting a statue? A solid gold statue with me on horseback? Maybe this wasn’t such a bad day after all…

“We’d like for you to plant a tree in the square so it can become a great symbol for our town!”

Oh.

She hurried excitedly to the door, much more eager to see this through than I was. “I’ll lead the way, so follow me!”

A few residents were already waiting there for us, but we waited for a minute until everyone had arrived. The secretary and I stood inside a large bed of soil. I know she’s a dog, but is she okay standing here barefoot? Or barepaw, rather? I need some sleep.

“Oh, this is so exciting!” Isabelle whispered as we waited “Just imagine, as our town grows, so will this tree!”

“Place is pretty old, right?” I asked “I’m surprised you haven’t done something like this before.”

“Well I’ve only served under one mayor before you and even then it wasn’t for very long so I can’t speak for the village’s history” she explained “but with you coming along I just thought it would be a neat idea… or something”

“Look” I sighed “I keep telling you, I’m not supposed to be—”

“Oh! Everybody’s here!” she exclaimed.
Really? I thought. There’s only five of them. Running this place can’t be so hard.

Isabelle dusted herself off and adjusted pretty much everything she could from her stance to the tie around her collar, prepping herself for an upcoming speech.
“Welcome everyone!” she announced, silencing the muttering crowd. “Today we’re honoured to crown our new mayor!!”

“…crown?” I asked.

“…oh, I mean… not crown, I meant, you know, um, proclaim? Appoint?”

“Try ‘elect’”

“Elect? Elect! Elect our new mayor!!” she said, followed by the most painful giggle she could muster. “Ahem, so… please take this sapling!”

Isabelle lifted the young tree off the ground and handed it to me with the upmost care.
“Ok, now go ahead and plant it by hand. Put your heart in it!”

Oh boy. I was never a gardening person back home and now I’ve got several eyes watching me put a tree in the ground. Thankfully, a hole was already dug for me, so all I had to do was step forward and place the sapling, making sure it was tucked in to the soil nicely. I was a bit shaky whilst doing so, probably because of all the eyes on me, and when I stood back up I was met with an applause and the sudden *CRACK* of a few party poppers.

“Mayor!” cheered Isabelle “Congratulations! I hope this tree grows just as strong and lively as Place! All of us are looking forward to the changes you’ll make to our beloved town!”

Then the impossible happened. I don’t know whether it was my ego finally taking hold, the happy atmosphere or Isabelle’s sunny face, but they finally did it. They managed to force a smile out of me.

I really like how these pics turned out, especially since this is such an important scene.
I couldn’t help but add some extra dialogue for Isabelle here, since in-game they skip right to her handing the player the sapling without her making any sort of introductory speech.

Much like the town tree, I hope My Place will grow up just as strong!
…that was disgustingly corny, I apologise.
