Description
Today I partook in a social gathering.
This is an event worth chronicling because I cannot remember the last time I did such a thing. It’s certainly the first time I’ve been to one in Place, that’s for sure.
It was nice, for the most part. Yuka, Simon, the mayor and I sat in The Roost to chit chat and drink coffee. It was actually the first time the mayor had ever tried Brewster’s house blend, despite being the one to have approved the building to begin with. The moment he gulped down the hot beverage, he spun in his chair and almost spilt the drink all other the floor.
“Amazing!” he exclaimed “A hint of sweet with a strong kick… This could put hair on your chest!”
“Better drink up, then” I quipped. Ugh, I never quip. I don’t even care that it made everybody laugh, I’ve let myself down.
“Very funny, Alice” the mayor grunted “A real la-de-dah, for sure. However, you have done little to upset my mood. The last couple weeks have been really good to me, you know?”
“I’ve noticed!” Simon chirped “And it’s been rubbing off on the town too! I gotta say, Club LOL has to be my favourite of your recent developments so far.”
“It’s a ghastly name,” Yuka interjected “but I do have to give credit where credit is due and to thank you for planting something other than pear trees in this backwater dump.”
Most would assume that Yuka and I would get on quite well, considering our temperament and the fact that we’re both koalas. Make no mistake, however, we are two very different people. In fact, I’m not a fan of how… blunt she can be, on occasion. Then again, perhaps I should admire her confidence?
“You can actually thank Isabelle for a lot of those things” said the mayor. “She was the one who gave me the first piece of foreign fruit, and if it weren’t for her busy work, we wouldn’t be sat here right now.”
It was surprising to see him deter so much praise unto someone else. I wonder…
“Oh, oh, and let’s not forget how much this coffee joint has helped out the local businesses! It’s like that butterfly effect thingy.”
“You and the Shi Tzu make quite the partnership. Yes”, came a hollow voice from the table beside us.
Vladimir sat alone, having parked himself there without any of us noticing. I’m not gonna bother sugar coating it, this guy gives me the creeps.
“I can only imagine what plans the two of you have for the future of our village” he continued once we had all spun our heads to find the source of his comically sinister accent.
“Oh, don’t get me started, Vladdy boy!” the mayor chuckled. “The current list of Public Works Projects is a little… quaint, to say the least, but I’m thinking we could have solar panels and fancy art installations and a decent internet provider someday…”
“Let’s just hope we have the space to erect such things across the village, yes?” Vladimir noted. “I’d hate to think that somebody’s house would get in the way of a truly revolutionary idea of yours…”
“Eh, I don’t see that happening” the mayor replied with a wave of his hand. For once, I’m thankful to see him disregard somebody’s opinion. “Besides, Place is looking better and better every day. Who would ever wanna leave!?”
“Yes, the village might be looking better than ever…” Yuka started (oh boy here we go) “…but you still look as if you’ve just woken up and haven’t bothered to iron your clothes ever since you bought them!”
“Hey!” the mayor spat “Only one of those things is true and it has nothing to do with my hair! Do you have any idea how long it took to get what I wanted from that poodle!?”
“THAT was what you WANTED!?” Yuka nearly shrieked. “Good lord, you are a politician – the face of this community no less, and you gallivant around looking like an adolescent hobo!”
“C-come on guys,” Simon tried, desperately, to intervene “Let’s not fight it out here. We’re supposed to be hanging out…”
“She started it!” the mayor exclaimed.
“I’m not the one who ruined the mood at all!” Yuka protested. “YOU, mayor, shouldn’t have been gloating. It’s rather pompous and I don’t respect such arrogant behaviour.”
“Oh, wow…” the mayor groaned with a cartoonish roll of his eyes. “You’re one to talk, Mrs ‘Get your grubby paws off my beautiful, oh so precious orange trees’!”
“Don’t you bring my babies into this!”
They continued to bicker as Simon tried his best to calm them both down. I would have helped too, but I was honestly enjoying the show. All the while, though, I couldn’t help but notice Vladimir. He was watching too, but he had that look in his eyes again… the same look I saw during the opening ceremony for the café.
I don’t like that bear. Not one bit.
~Author’s Notes~
I have moved onto Sai 2, which allows me to add instant gaussian blur without needing to export layers to other programmes which is super cool and convenient. I like how this pic turned out, very nice colours and composition.
