There was a time Ileana didn't truly believe in demons, nor in sirens, vampires, or even angels. Her family lived in solitude, on a lone beach somewhere around nowhere, were all they had was the ocean, the sand, fish and peace. Ileana was the third daughter, the youngest of triplets. She and her two sisters always played games, games they'd invented on their own, or helped their parents catch fish or find kelp or collect seashells. They grew up in the company of no one else than the family they had, and never did it bother them - they didn't need anyone else! The stories their parents made up for them; they had enough adventure that the three sisters never even thought of finding their own. After all, why would they want to see a dangerous, deadly monster of questionable existence if they could listen to stories of an angel being stripped of their wings, a werewolf's curse, shadows and darkness and all that in the comfort of their safe home? Well, Ileana would have wanted to, she'd always been the most adventurous of the triplets. But their parents constantly warned them of the many dangers out there, and Ileana didn't want to disappoint them - so she stayed.

One day, though. One day, their home became more dangerous than anywhere else, and Ileana's life took a drastic turn. It was a stormy day: the wind blew with little mercy, the agitated sea produced high, crashing waves. Even the Foss family, huddled together on the sea ground, hiding between kelp, could feel the raging ocean above them. But Ileana, by the age of ten years, wasn't afraid. More than once she'd tried to escape her mother's arms, always to be met with the familiar warning: "If you swim too high to the surface, the waves will drag you along and throw you against the beach, or if worse, the rocks!" She soon grew tired of trying, and eventually, she just sank down to attempt to sleep.

But then, her father called something - and he sounded surprised and upset. Mother replied with the same tone in her voice and then one of her sisters shrieked: "A human!" Ileana got up to see what the ruckus was about - just in time to see how her father left them behind, swimming towards the surface with powerful movements of his tail. She followed him with her eyes, and then she realized what the problem was: a flailing, dark silhouette kicking its legs in the water, panic obvious in its movements, and not far away, the shadow of an upside-down boat rocking between the waves.

"What's dad going to do with that?" She asked in excitement, already thinking of following him. The only thing holding her back now was herself - she wasn't so sure yet, if it was a smart idea or not. "The human fell out of its boat," one of her sisters replied. "He wants to help it back inside, and get it to the beach!" "He- he doesn't look like he can do it alone, the boat...", mother said, her voice trembling. Ileana followed her worried gaze and watched how the human's boat constantly slipped away from her father so that he couldn't get the human, who was safely in his arms by now, inside. "That's it," Her mother turned around. "Please, all of you, stay here, I'm helping daddy!" And she zipped away, lightning-like, towards the already distant silhouettes of the boat, the human and her husband.

Five seconds later, Ileana followed. Her sisters weren't fast enough to hold her back and could only gasp in surprise, but Ileana didn't mind them. She didn't even think while she swam to where her mother was, she didn't slow down when she watched how the boat crashed into the human's side, a dark red cloud of blood exploding in the water, right next to her father. She only slowed down when she could see her father's face - pale in shock, regret in his expression, and then panic when he saw his wife coming closer. He managed to gesture a warning to her before he convulsed, just once - and then buried his teeth in the human's leg. Like a shark, he tore its flesh apart.

Ileana's mother froze mid-swim, and so did she, at last. What was going on? Why was he, her father - her funny and kind father! - about to kill the being he'd initially wanted to save? Ileana was shocked, confused - but then it dawned on her: in one of the stories she'd listened to, it was said that sirens were mermaids that got to taste human blood, intentionally or not. And that human had been injured, so her father must've inhaled the blood...! Did that mean he was a siren now?

She could just stare in horror while her father maimed the thing that'd once been the human, and she didn't hear her mother shout to her to swim away. Not much later, she simply grabbed the shocked Ileana by the arm, dragging her away from the cruel scene, back to where her sisters hid and urged them to get up. "We can't stay, we have to... we gotta leave daddy behind, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry..." She apologized even more times, while Ileana couldn't speak, too shocked to process what just happened. She barely noticed how her mother took her two sisters by the wrist and dragged them away from the kelp, and then started to swim away, quickly putting distance between them and their home.

They swam along the coast for several days until they finally arrived in a calm, seaside town. In their human forms, they found a place to stay - a small inn near the beach, where they started to work as fishers and collected seashells and other marine souvenirs to earn their stay. They stayed there for six years. During those years, Ileana started to love socializing - it was a way for her to forget her father. She distracted herself with pretty clothes and self-made accessories, until, one day, a letter landed in her hands. "St. Reverie", the school for the gifted, chose to invite her as a student!
