Description I seriously need to stop painting "COME AT ME BRO" poses. I promise, this is the last Jesus ripoff for awhile.

I had so much trouble naming this one. But here's my thought process:
I wanted to do a feral character with a bit of a magic vibe. Someone whom you could see almost living a primal, druidic life. I initially wanted a warm colour palette with the character stepping over some stones, trailing magic tendrils. I couldn't pull it off, unfortunately. So I decided that a winter wonderland would be nice as well. I considered putting some bodies on the ground, as I wanted the viewer to feel like the final victim in a patrol squadron, but I figured the ground was drawing enough attention already with the crazy snow stuff.
It was a LOT of fun to paint.

Also, I used myself as the model, more or less. I took a few photos in the mirror for the line drawing. All the shading, texturing and colour stuff was done without reference. So you could theoretically call this a self-portrait, to some degree. I really like the idea of a yearly selfie. I might do that. Next year: starship trooper. Get psyched.
(Also, I'm not underweight, anorexic or otherwise unhealthy. I'm just really fucking thin. Don't worry about it. Other comments and critiques are welcome!)

How necessary is a gore warning on this??

"I promise, this is the last Jesus ripoff for awhile." Ha ha, I'm sorry but I had to laugh at that...stigmata and everything aside from just the pose itself I can really see that.

As to the gore warning I really don't think you need it. That's for excessive blood and gore. This is stylized imo and to a minimal degree. It's still tasteful and not something that makes you turn your head in disgust.

Artistically, I don't think I want to be critiquing you, haha, but as far as a feral/primal look goes, you nailed it with the expression and blood on the hands as well as the environment. The cape and runes on the face as well as the lighting and hand pose give that druidic feel. The rest of the clothing however, is a little too modern and pressed. It looks like khakis with a semi-formal dress belt and normal shoes. Perhaps you changed this direction after you said that you couldn't pull off the warm color palette part, etc...? Or this is the part that is suppose to represent you the artist, and it's an amalgamation of sorts?

Either way this is a really great piece. Something with the lighting above him makes me feel like he just kind of teleported there after killing...something, someone....He has as strange zen about him though which is slightly alarming as if the kill has brought him closer to something or made him stronger...I dunno maybe that's just my imagination? Any insights from the artist on this?

Haha, I totally get what you're saying about the clothing looking too modern. I need to do fashion and costume studies really badly. I was going for a canvas pant look and nondescript old-time shoes. It could probably use a reworking for some flair and authenticity. To be honest, I didn't put enough thought into the outfit. It popped into my head and I went with it, which can be risky.

I like that you're getting the zen sort of cool, composed savagery though. That's exactly what I was trying to do
Thanks for the in-depth comment!

Haha, I get this, yeah I do that sometimes too and it can be risky but sometimes you just have to go with it and let it be what its gong to be. I don't mean that in the sense of being lazy, but sometimes art stops being art for me, at least in the creation process when I throttle down on studies too hard, or just end up trying too hard in general. Sometimes it just has to flow more organically and I know I've had pieces suffer because of that but as an artist sometimes I need that unrestrained outlet to just not give a damn, ya know? Don't know if that rings true with you but that's something I've felt before. And yeah you definitely nailed that whole "I'm calm with killing zen look" love it!

The difference between "art" and painting is always the one that gets me. I've never considered myself a true artist. I'm just someone who draws and paints. For me, it's never been about self-expression or anything artsy like that -- I just wanted to make cool pictures. Now, however, I realize that I have very artistic inclinations after all. I've been reading some books that opened my eyes. Now I want to make more meaningful art that resonates with my emotions. Which can be hard, especially if your skills aren't developed enough. But from now on, I'm going to work to strengthen my "artistic" intuition and go with the flow more. There are pieces of art that just smash you, you know? You look at them and you're just speechless because they reverberate with you on a deep level. And in a picture like that, nitpicky, technical flaws are irrelevant.

Wow, I could not have said that better myself. Not trying to be short either but I just absolutely agree with this and have noticed the same progression with my own understanding and paths into this if you will. I can definitely relate that's for sure, thanks for sharing that.

Thanks! I'm still planning to go in and paint on it for a few more hours, though. Not entirely happy with the overall balance and composition...

Id' probably have gotten that joke if I were smart, or something. Anyways, it's actually great. I especially like the blue backlight and the vertical fade on his pants. To me, the background begs for a more vertical - dare I say "rain-drop shaped" - composition with something meg dramatic. The blood hints at a story, but leaves me wanting to know more than the piece tells (in a bad way.) On this note, I don't like how the texture of the leaves/snow is in contrast to Mr. Periodhands. He's too bold and the texture's too fine/detailed-without-being-actually-detailed.

Also, maybe just go the fuck ahead and call it a self portrait, you closet narcissist.

He's already been called a lot of things, but Mr. Periodhands is absolutely my least favourite. You devil.
On another note, thanks man, that's all excellent advice. I'll be doing a few more hours of painting on it and I'll try to keep those things in mond.

I can't call it a selfie because it doesn't look enough like me and I didn't actually give a fuck about making it do so. Artist problems D:

Haha, the first thing I thought was COME AT ME BRUH. Really like it though, and it's a ton of improvement over the last human I saw by you!

I'm just drawn to those overdramatic poses. Idk. If Kekai can do it, so can I. I'm excited because I'm improving with each painting I do now. It's very fun.
