Description
The Toys R Us in my town closed today. Of course, I went to the last day for the deals. It was kind of a sad affair, really, seeing a huge business fail so spectacularly. Geoffrey the Giraffe, the Toys R Us mascot, was and is a beloved character for kids and adults alike. His image was emblazoned all over the store--from small shelf signs to the huge banner shown here.I was waiting in line to check out and saw this scene with the little girl. It seemed to me the reverent way she was standing in front of that banner, that she was saying her goodbye to Geoffrey. The police style 'Caution' tape also spoke to me of a crime scene--'Who Murdered Geoffrey?' (I'm betting the C.E.O. with a calculator from a beach chair in Aruba, but that's just speculation)
The moment only lasted a few seconds--long enough for me to get out my smartphone and grab a shot then the moment was over and the reverent little girl, called by her mother to 'GET OVER HERE!' was off in tantrum-land! LOL!
This is dedicated to my good friends and who have taught me that great photos are everywhere if you just look for them and that the best camera is the one you have with you. Thanks, my friends!

wow, john you are so correct about capturing a photo. This is so sad...especially after reading your interpretation. You shoot pictures they way you write poetry. from deep within your heart.
Nice one johnny kid.

Thank you Linda It's sad, but I suppose there will come another store to capture the hearts and minds (and mom & dad's wallets! LOL!) soon enough. I can't hardly believe that the whole world will only buy toys from soulless giants like Amazon but I've been wrong before

Soulless, is correct.I wish the world would get back to like it was in the 60's...but then we wouldn't have met each other Johnny.... right?
Glad I met you! Id say its high time for another Montserrat Poetry Festival!

Thank you and I sort of agree that the color doesn't convey the sadness. I did try a b&w conversion but it seemed to lose something.

I spent many a time perusing this store down the years looking with and buying toys for my Nephews and Nieces
Was very suprised when I read it was in trouble and the two stores closest to me have recently closed for good
Don`t think we had the Giraffe as a mascot here (don`t recall it anyway) but quite the poignant capture given the lil girl and the "Caution" tape here, good eye my friend and yes, images abound wherever you look if you look close enough Honoured for the nod and mention too brother, have a good one!

yup, me too, brother. I wondered when they announced last February that they were going to close 180 stores if it wouldn't wind up being all 1,800 of them world-wide.
Geoffrey may not have been a global thing, but here he was the symbol for Toys R US.
I credit you for even noticing the scene so this shot is as much yours as it is mine (Richard too ) Thank you again for the influence and inspiration

I told my friend once and they literally cried... and I agree and hope so too. And for being on the spot like that that's a pretty good picture.

It was 70% off here
Should have been 90% off.
Then at least I could have afforded the only decent thing left in the shop and that was a nerf gun robot

Yup, it's the end of an era the discounts are staggered so the closer the store is to closing the better the deals

I went, but the place was picked almost clean. But I found a deal, not long afterwards. I might take a shot of my last haul from there, when I find an opportunity for it.

Dude this shot rocks...you should huckster it to your local newspaper. It has editorial (and Street) written all over it...bravo
I am honored by your words beyond the pale and happy to be sharing this with such good company. Thanks a million stars, John
And oh man...yeah it's melancholy to think that this iconic shop is closing its doors forever. I remember countless hours spent in there waiting for my kids to pick out a toy. Since they were only getting one each they'd contemplate the store's entire inventory trying to make the correct decision that would bring them everlasting happiness. That short lived joy usually lasted only for the car ride home. But I did get pretty good on Playstation which I used to play as they "searched" aisle after aisle for the "chosen one"

Thank you Richard I can relate to your shopping trips to Toys R Us though for me it was Toy Castle when I was a kid. It was a small store but loaded with everything a kid could ever want
(at least until the next trip to town.
I did try to submit it to the local paper but couldn't figure out the process on their website and couldn't get anybody on the phone to find out how Oh well. I'm happy that you like it

Toy Castle...not a bad knock off I guess. I mean they had toys and that's all that really matters.
You call the news desk.
