Cosmic-Cuttlefish — Gaussian Blur Version Differences

Description Edit: Thanks to those who helped me out with this - switching to Apophysis 7X version 15B solved it.

I noticed a while ago that with the latest versions of Apophysis 7X (I've tried 15C and 15D), the blur variations are acting oddly for me, and have a stepped/posterized appearance. I posted an example on the right of the same Gaussian Blur, but from Apophysis 2.09. I'm sure that Apophysis 7X never used to have this issue for me... Does anyone know if it's caused by the version itself, or if it's likely to be my computer? I'm running Windows 7.

Different versions of Apophysis handle some variations differently, and I think blurs were and example of this.  I don't know if it's related to threading (i.e. if you use a single thread, does the issue resolve itself?), or what the root reason is.  I recall that FarDareisMai made a some samples showing differences in rendering between a few versions of Apophysis, but I don't know where that would be.

If you're looking for a workaround, I might suggest adding some pre-blur to that layer to break apart the edges, though I can't say how effective it would be for your use case.

Thank you for taking the time to respond! Following GraphicLia 's suggestion, I switched to Apophysis 7X 15B, which seems to work fine now (I think I must have been using that one before my computer broke, some time back). Until now, I had been using pre-blur, and it mostly worked well enough, although not particularly with the noise variation. I didn't have multithreading turned on in the settings, and changing it seems not to affect things.

I partly wonder if this is something that other people have encountered... Since 15B works fine though, I'm happy sticking with that version.

No worries, I am glad you were able to find a solution to the problem you were experiencing!  I keep hearing 15b as the "recommended" option, especially for compatibility with old fractals.  I keep a version of it on my dropbox with plugins so I don't ever lose it, and because it's easier to link people than finding where the old Apophysis versions are all the time.

I normally render in Chaotica, which implements the internals differently than Apophysis and doesn't experience this issue... actually I go straight to Chaotica's own version of Gaussian which I think is more effective for the types of fractals I create.  I still use Gaussian and Noise from time to time, however!

I might have to try out Chaotica at some point, in that case, especially if your own results are anything to go by! I need to teach myself more about how to use Apophysis before I worry too much about finer details, I suppose, but it's definitely something to look into.

Hah, while I do recommend it, I wouldn't call it a panacea!  It's much easier to do some things in Apophysis, like manipulating Xaos.  Apophysis itself can still do really cool things [Raw Apo Flame] , and Chaotica isn't really necessary until later in my workflow when I have interesting structures and shapes I want to color and try to render out.  I always start out creating things in Apophysis, and migrate to Chaotica later on once I want to explore what I've been toying around with more seriously.

Thanks for the mention. I do remember others having a similar problem and went back to 15B. There is also a version 16 listed on the website which I was totally unaware of. Have you looked at JWildfire?

I haven't tried JWildfire, although I've seen people get good results with it. It might be worth looking into at some point, although there are still quite a lot of things I don't understand about Apophysis... I imagine I might just end up confusing myself if I switched over to it.

Another place you could inquire as to WHY this is happening is either our CV    He is very kind and helpful...also  the good old  Apo-shack?

Thank you for your response! Thankfully, switching to a different version solved the problem completely. As to why it would happen in the first place, I have no idea... It's definitely a strange-looking effect, though!
