Description
005 Rescue Operations 1.The Starbase, or at least what was left of it floated into view as the USS Saladin made another slow pass in an elliptical course around it. The remainder of the hastily assembled taskforce were either in a holding station or in a standard orbital pattern. Very much similar to the one the USS Saladin was using to stay clear of the debris field and radiation fields that made the use of the transporter hazardous.
"Hazardous." Ensign April O'Neill thought with a sneer, recalling the briefing statement, was an understatement. . She and her co pilot, flight officer Sh'In, had been relegated to the secondary shuttlebay of the Saladin and were currently in a holding patter waiting for another shuttle to make its final approach.
As she looked out of the side window overlooking the hangar bay she silently watched the orchestrated chaos of engineering service crews, pilots and medical teams prepping shuttles or unloading the casualties that the shuttles were bringing in from the station.
As she watched a team transporting an heavily burned station crewmember to the elevator, the person; if it was a woman or man she could not say. Sh'In nudged her mentioning the shuttle that had been on final approach having just settled down, crew rushing towards it to get the injured out and prepping it for another run just like they had been doing for the last hour. The communications station crackled to live. They had been monitoring the signals so far but she recognized the soar voice of the shuttlebays flight control officer.
"Understood control... shuttle 7 moving out"
As she punched her navigation and helm controls the shuttle raced out of the shuttlebay and into the debris field and towards the station itself.
Starbase 91 had certainly seen better days. It's main fusion reactor lay open to space. A gaping hole showing the innards of the station itself while secondary internal and external still riddled the starbase. Its lighting was still fluctuating as emergency repairs crews tried to restore power to the badly damaged station. How this catastrophe had happened she did not know and she was happy that that was something the command crew had to figure out. For now she had a job to do, time to earn her pay.
