Description This gauntlet is a simpler design than my previous work. Since it is being used for LARP events, the gauntlet needed to be able to take a hit without getting damaged, and without damaging other weapons. Naturally this meant I had to go heavy on the plating, and add minimal, low profile, pieces.

Love it! Was wondering if you could help me make one of those. Do you have any templates?  I am thinking of making one out of eva foam & leather. I have a steampunk arc reactor that I made already. Looking to add the arm to it.

I do have templates, but as I sell these that'd be like giving away my trade secrets. I can offer tips when you start your build though. Just message me.

Where do you sell the templates, & how much? I don't mind paying a deviantart person as much as some of the websites that are out there.

Apologies, I don't sell the templates. I meant that I don't give templates away since they represent the hours of trial and error I've gone through to get the shapes right.

did you do any hardening on the leather?

No, this piece is being used in a "padded weapons" LARP not an SCA type LARP. It was more important that it not damage the weapons when hit, so hardening wasn't necessary.

I did wet form the pieces to get a better curve though, that was about it.

oh I see, I never thought about the armour damaging the weapons... so no sharp edges on the armour.

Yeah, no sharp edges, and he wanted something that still looked like it was made by Tesla. So there are a few low profile brass pieces, but nothing that would damage them.

i see a solution for a problem i have for my (own wip) guantlets...

i wanted to create gauntlets but from plate steel (heavy but over 9000 awesome) which i would use on larp events, but werent allowed i was told... but seeing leather isnt proper imho i see a perfect solution here... rivet on sheets of thin metal to emulate the plates and still keep them soft enough for larp.

thanks .

ps, how did you make the fingers with the leather? same as the metal ones are made or?
pps, what kind of leather do you use? i always wonder, it looks so good...

Plated leather is the way to go! It's light, and it looks great.

The fingers are made with 3-4 oz leather. It needs to be thin enough, that when joined together it's not so bulky it affects the articulation while being thick enough to hold it's shape. The fingers were honestly the trickiest part to get right.

This is made from several different thicknesses of vegetable tanned leather.

thank you for your reply.
3-4 oz, so about 1.2/1.6 mm thick, thanks, thats a good starting point .

is there a difference with vegetable tanned leather vs, regular leather, stronger or more durable? because i noticed the rivets i tried after using they would tear the leather or damage it with every movement, im probably doing something wrong, i guess the wrong kind of rivets.

anyways ill figure it out, thanks again.

I use Double Cap Rapid Rivets for the fingers. The key is to hit the rivets hard enough that they stay together as they should, but not so hard that the leather doesn't slide beneath them. They act as a pivot.
