Description
Read all comments in all the MMD in Blender tutorials I've made to see if your question has been answered before you ask ^^Also, check out our group There are other MMD in Blender tutorials there as well as art
I created an updated version of this tutorial. You can find it here fav.me/dbvo83i
I decided to make a MMD to Blender tutorial because all the ones I found were a couple of years old and were hard to follow because of changes in Blender and the MMD tools addon. This tutorial uses Blender 2.75 and the most recent version of MMD tools addon.
Hopefully you will find this helpful. If you have any questions feel free to ask
This is something I didn't put in the tutorial but I thought I would mention it here. Some MMD models may not work in Blender. If you can't get a model to work in Blender then you'll have to find another model to use instead.
Here is the link to download Blender www.blender.org/download/
They just released Blender 2.76-rc1 while I was making this tutorial. I don't think it's the stable version of 2.76 so I'm sticking with 2.75 for now. If you want to download 2.75 I can help you find it on the site ^^
(Edit: This tutorial works for all new versions of Blender)
Blender 2.76 has been released and I checked to make sure the MMD tools addon works in it and it does ^^
MMD tools addon works in Blender 2.77 as well ^^
MMD tools works in Blender 2.78 ^^ (Sometimes when you try to convert certain mmd models into cycles render it closes Blender for some reason. Just keep re-opening Blender and convert the model to cycles again. After a couple of tries it should work. If you don't want to deal with this you should stick with Blender 2.77 for now)
MMD tools works in Blender 2.79 (It still has the convert model to cycles issue where when you hit the convert button Blender closes. Just keep re-opening Blender and convert the model to cycles again. After a couple of tries it should work. If you don't want to deal with this you should stick with Blender 2.77 if you don't care about using the most recent version of Blender.)
(Edit)
Here is the link to download MMD tools addon for Blender github.com/sugiany/blender_mmd… (Do not download this one because it is old instead download the newest version by powroupi github.com/powroupi/blender_mm… It will look different from how it looks in this tutorial, so I recommend following my new tutorial instead.)
VPD pose files can now be imported into Blender. Download the latest version of the mmd tools addon by powroupi
The export pose button has a traceback error and so does the new export motion button

I know with the newer version of the addon that when you go to import a model in the file browser there are buttons above the scale that let you choose what gets imported. You can deselect the armature and it won't import the MMD models armature. Or you can delete the armature by selecting it in object mode. I think that will completely remove the armature but I'm not sure ^^

I don't know how to convert XPS models to Blender then to MMD, but here is a tutorial someone made that explains how to import XPS models to Blender
XPS to Blender 2.7x(Blender internal the easy way)Things we are gonna need are
Blender 2.7x http://www.blender.org/XPS tools addon for Blender (Blender 2.7x XPS Tools 1.1 made by yours truly )A Model for XPS/XNALara (Binary or ASCII)
For Mac Users
Safari automatically unzips downloaded files and deletes the original ZIP file.
Try disabling this function (I don't know how, I never used a Mac) or download using another browser like Firefox.
Preparation
UPDATE: Here is avideo showing the install process. Thanks a lot!
Install Xps addon to blender
First thing we have to do is to installing the addon.
Go to the provided link and download the latest version of the addon. DO NOT UNZIP IT.
Open Blender and go to File > User Preferences
Select the Addons tab and c and here is a tutorial about how to export models from Blender to MMD github.com/powroupi/blender_mm… it's for converting Makehuman models to MMD but it says the steps are similar for other types of models ^^

It will not work! It's when I try to load the files, it doesn't show in the adding. And the ones that will work, I put in Blender 2.7.0 and still nothing... what do I do from there?

I think the add on only works in 2.75 and up. Try installing 2.75 or a newer version of Blender. When I first started using the add on I was using Blender 2.75 and now I'm currently using 2.79b ^^

You're right her textures have issues even when viewing the model in render preview. I'm not sure what's going on with the textures or how to fix them.
Did you change the scale for the motion?
But even making sure the scale is the same as the scale you imported the model in her legs still do not work properly with motions. Her legs pull away from the center and I'm not sure why they are doing that.
I have two Kaito PDA models that I haven't used yet and checked them both. One of them worked fine with motions but the other has the same leg issue as the Miku model. It could be an issue that some PDA models have when the person ripped them, or Blender can't import them correctly. I'm not sure how to fix this either.
Powroupi might know how to fix it, or could look at the models that have the problem. You could ask them here github.com/powroupi/blender_mm… or you could try asking I think he helps powroupi out with the add on ^^

Ok There are two models so far that I've found where motions do not work correctly with their legs. Their legs pull away from the center. I made sure the scale for the motion was the same scale as the model when I imported them in ^^
Here is the first model with the leg motion issue. Her textures also don't show up correctly even when viewing in Render preview for both Blender Render and Cycles Render. DL link PDA-Like Hatsune Miku
The second model with the leg motion issue. DL link PDAFT Half Spats Kaito

The problems with these 2 models are not being caused by mmd_tools. These 2 models are full of errors. Someone needs to run the pmx error checker on them and correct the errors. Additionally the Kaito model has a lower leg bone IK angle limit of -1800, when it should have an angle limit of -180. The Miku model has 4 foot IK bones instead of the usual 2. My best suggestion to you is to save time and find some better Kaito and Miku models to use instead.

Ok, thanks for taking a look at them I have another question that is for all models getting imported into Blender. I noticed a while ago that new bones were added to models. The hand twist, arm twist bones etc. If you try moving or rotating them in pose mode the model breaks away from the armature and deforms. Is this something that is still being worked on so that we don't have to rotate the entire arm to rotate the hands and other parts of the models? ^^

Hogarth-MMD In reply to crazy4anime09 [2018-04-23 18:45:15 +0000 UTC]
As a far as I know, the only bones that mmd_tools adds to an imported model are shadow bones and dummy bones. If you are seeing an issue with twist bones, then you need to upload an example model which is having that issue, and powroupi can take a look at it.

Hogarth-MMD In reply to crazy4anime09 [2018-04-23 20:14:48 +0000 UTC]
As far as I know, that is just normal, okay behavior for twist bones. Twist bones are not directly animated by VMD animations. They are child bones of arm bones, and they add a little twist/tweak to the arm rotation when the arm bones are animated. If you want to edit the rest pose location of a twist bone, you do that in Blender's edit mode, not in pose mode.

Ktm "full of errors"? The problem on Kaito are the extra bones on his legs (右足D, 右ひざD and 右足首D)
Btw on mmd it works fine even with -1800 on it's IK configuration.

The owner of this blog is wonderfully expert with MMD models, and here is how she replied to my question about Project Diva models:
Project Diva is a rhythm game created by Sega (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatsune_… ). Therefore all MMD models made in "Project Diva"-style are game-rips*. I do not feature game-ripped models on my blog as those are kind of in a gray zone when it comes to how "legal" they are and loads of them can be found here on DeviantArt with just a simple search.
*The only exception to this is Mamama who made a Project Diva styled Miku, Kaito and Meiko models many years ago. The Meiko model is featured on my blog but unfortunately Mamama ended the distribution for the other ones.

Is this a Project Diva model? If so, the problem is probably caused by duplicate center bones. Run the PMX error checker in PMD editor or PMX editor, to see a listing of the indexes of the duplicate bones, Then delete those duplicate center bones.

Hogarth-MMD In reply to Hogarth-MMD [2018-04-24 03:22:26 +0000 UTC]
Okay, powroupi cracked the case. The problem was exactly what I said it was. Someone needed to run the pmx error checker and correct the errors of this model. Before reporting a model as having an mmd_tools issue, you should always do that. This model has 4 center bones. Delete the 3 duplicate center bones (bones 110, 111, 112) and this Kaito model will dance fine in Blender.
