Description
A passion of mine has been the study of geisha since I was twelve years old. To be a geisha is to be a walking work of art. Young geisha or maiko are taught to dance, sing, play instruments, serve tea and sake. It is a mistake in American thinking that the geisha were prostitutes. They were and are artists. A formal Kimono for unmarried women is called a Furisode. Literally translated as swinging sleeves, this is the kimono of the young maiko. This is my friend Heather in the kimono commissioned for her. This satin finish fabric is patterned with varying sizes of cherry blossoms. I made her obi to be a contrasting in deep blue with fun pinwheels spaced about it. I have not perfected the ways to tie an obi so I tied hers in the same bow and wrapped the ends around it. The oi does not have to match the kimono at all. I will admit to using my machines to sew about half of this kimono. It takes quite a bit of hand sewing to get this look right.Β This picture was taken during a photo shoot with My friend Heather.
