Description
At the end of the last issue in “Siege of the Crystal Empire”, this is how King Sombra looked after being saved by Radiant Hope with the help of the Princesses. Somehow, they managed to wipe the Umbrum part of him out entirely, which helped him become all pony. The reason for why is because he decided to “make his own destiny” by double crossing the Umbrum and putting the Crystal Heart back on its pedestal instead of destroying it like they wanted.

I may as well go ahead and mention that I hated how Sombra was being portrayed and characterized in the IDW comics by Jeremy Whitley. People often say that his portrayal in “The Beginning of the End” was so terrible that it makes the comics a greater preference, but in my opinion…it’s the other way around. Sombra’s return and portrayal in Season 9 was one of the very things that I particularly enjoyed about it, because not only was his appearance faithful to his cameo in “The Cutie Re-Mark” but it managed to thankfully retcon Whitley’s trash on paper.

As for why I don’t like Comic-Sombra…well, there are plenty of reasons for why.

Every attempt Jeremy Whitley made at giving the character more depth only seemed to make him come across as pathetic beyond anything. No matter how many times people say that he was relatable, I couldn’t find anything even REMOTELY relatable about him. He had little in the ways of personality, his reformation was forced and unnecessary, and his portrayal as a tragic figure was irritating and bland. Seriously, I’ve seen portrayals of tragic villains done better through the likes of Loki in the “Marvel Cinematic Universe” and Darth Vader in “Star Wars”! People also say that in both “The Crystal Empire” and “The Beginning of the End”, Sombra was clearly more like a pawn than a character. In my opinion, though…the comics were where Sombra was more like a pawn, and not just for the Umbrum, but for the story as well!

What’s more, any time I’d ever think back on Sombra’s origin comic in the first “Fiendship is Magic” issue, I’d find myself scratching my head on it. Instead of helping me get a better understanding of Sombra as a character and provide decent world building, all the comic did was make me confused no matter how much I tried to understand it. Basically, NOTHING about it made a lot of sense in my head. It certainly doesn’t help that just about every aspect regarding the story didn’t age well in the slightest, because even before “The Beginning of the End” came along, the show presented a great many things regarding Sombra and the Crystal Empire that openly retconned the origin comic.

People say that Starlight Glimmer's backstory and reformation were each openly underwhelming and badly-worked. In my opinion, though, both Comic-Sombra's backstory and reformation really take the cake. I pretty much find it laughable that anyone would like the comics, and that Jeremy Whitley would even express fondness for them and consider them a favorite of his to write, because I personally found both stories to be SO terrible that I want to find a copy of each arc and burn them up.

One thing's for sure, I'm awfully happy that "The Beginning of the End" came along and retconned the comics to oblivion, because I for one refuse to EVER consider the Sombra comics canon no matter what.

In regards to this picture...

Similar to the picture I shared of Radiant Hope, I used the object removal feature on my Photos app to completely get rid of Shadow Lock, who was a character that appeared in the "From the Shadows" arc of the MLP: FiM comics. However, getting rid of the brown cloak was very tricky, so I had to color over that part with the same color as the ground before smoothing the colored-in spots out. I'm hoping that everything came out well regardless.
