Chapter 1: The Blind One /// Chapter 3: Going for Distance~~~~~~~
The night previous Pi had spent catching up with his adopted father, Scythe. They chattered on for hours about everything under the sun that they could. From mares to battles to how best to bond with their riders. As the sun crept higher in the sky, Pi knew that it was time to let Da return to Cyrus. He hated saying goodbyes. The last time was easier since there was chaos all around and Pi made a run from it to escape the Mages of Durant that were found nearby. He hoped that Cyrus made it out ok and that Da was able to aid him quickly after Pi’s quick departure.
Since he stayed up through the night and wasn’t feeling terribly tired, he decided that he was ok to stay up through the rest of the day. The air felt a little warmer now that the sun was up. The different textures and organic material around him showed the slight variations in temperature that helped him see better. He mentioned the Mummy that he was going to finish up his walk and he will be back shortly. She reluctantly agreed to let him wonder off by herself as long as he promised to not go further than he had been before.
She knew that he was a stallion that wanted adventure and that he could be trusted on his own but she worried for her dear friend’s safety. Pi was still a new resident on grounds and while he was familiar with the farm lands, the trails that lead up into the dense forested woods of the Blue Ridge Mountains was another beast all together. She had full sight plus an extra gift herself and she still got lost from time to time. She watched his butter butt disappear down the gravel road and held her breath. How much trouble could he get into?
Not much longer than an hour later Pi found himself still on the same trail, making progress quickly up the side of the first great hill. The woods around him were alive with wildlife. Sunshine made the mountain air smell fresh and clean. Even on this winter day there was the promise of spring around the corner that the warmth provided. This was a touch further than he had gone previously with Mummy. He wouldn’t mention it to her when he got back. Rather he would explain that he took his time coming back, exploring his freedom.
A new path emerged to the left of the one he was currently on. His heat vision alerted him that instead of gravel, this path was made of soft dirt. Taking a step in that direction he realized the dirt was very soft and that he could tell the difference between the two with the heat sensing. Excitement to this realization spurred him down the pathway a little faster. Maybe in a month’s time the heat sensing would allow him to see more. He was lost in thought, not paying much attention to where his hooves landed for the first time in as long as he remembered, the path forked off leading him left again. Before he realized it the dirt path ended at a sea of long grass. Stepping back a moment, he suddenly snapped back to his predicament. This was a new meadow on a mountain path that he was never on before. This meadow could give way to a cliff in the next step. Sighing heavily, the weight settled in his chest that he was lost.
Puzzling over what to do now, he thought he heard someone behind him. Snorting loudly and pawing the ground showed that he was not afraid. He shouted out to ask who was there. The only reply that he got was silence. Shrugging it off as he just heard a bird or something, he decided that the only way to move was forward. Surely two lefts would get him back to where he started. Just another left would do the trick.
With that thought in mind he turned slightly left and pressed on through the meadow. After about 300 yards the meadow did give away to a cliff. He stopped as soon as he sensed the air flow and the heat of the ground suddenly dropped off. Pi stood tall breathing in deeply. This was one time that he wished for his eyes back. He was used to living in the dark and he didn’t mind it so much anymore unless it was brought up as a hindrance. But right now on a mountain side cliff in the middle of the day, he wished he could see the view that he knew was magnificent.
Pi stood there for a good amount of time, listening to his surroundings. There seem to be a pair of bunnies in the bushes over his right shoulder. He could tell from their small, quick hoping strides. It sounded like either siblings have a squabble or an amorous pair of parents. That he was not able to discern. At his back, in the meadow was a small herd of whitetail does. They were stepping gingerly through the grass, nibbling as they went. Keeping a wary eye on the stallion that stood still at the edge of their dinner spot. There were a few birds that were spaced out all around him. They flitted from tree to tree, singing and chirping up a storm. He flattened his ears slightly. Birds were not his favorite of wild animals. He preferred to keep his distance from most species.
His muscles were starting to protest his standing still at the top of a cliff. Letting out a deep breathe, he figured it would probably be best to return home. Or at least try to find his way back home. He took a shaky step back and in an attempt to turn his massive body around the front of his leading hoof hit the base of a large stone. The momentum that he was using to move his body forward was suddenly turned against him as he found his balance thrown quickly forward. Over the side of the cliff he went.
The shock of falling over had not hit him yet. His left foot was temporarily sticking behind the rock he kicked, the rest of his body was nearly over his head. To him, his world was underwater. He felt weightless and ten tons all at the same time. His foot began to follow the rest of him over the side. In quick thinking he thrust his left foot out to catch his fall. The drop really was only about 6 or 7 feet but to a one ton Bataille stallion it would be a hard landing.
Pi was still not really ready for the ground to hit his hoof so he was surprised when it hit hard and fast. The actual crash was a blur of motion. The rest of his body collapsed on top of his front legs and then knees due to the momentum. His muzzle smashed into the ground sending figurative lights dancing in his head. Once he was done falling, he rolled on his right side. He felt his knees and face starting to swell already. He was sure that he was going to bruise badly. The chances of a bone breaking were high and as nervous as that made him, he grit his teeth and stood up. Testing out all four legs, neck and anything else he could think of he was able to conclude that nothing was broken.
Satisfied that he was relatively ok, the soreness started to set in. He laid back down and rested a bit. As the sun started to set on his day, Pi drifted off into sleep and recovery. A crack of another twig snapped him awake. Heart racing he lifted his head, baring his teeth and pinning his ears. He began to let out a low grumble that led into a shout.
“WHO IS THERE?” he screeched. This was not the time to mess with a Bataille stallion. Wounded and tired, they could be unpredictable and very dangerous.
“It’s us, are you ok?” the voice was familiar. Sigma and Theta emerged from the forest to Pi’s left. Sigma’s voice was filled with concern. They spent the entire afternoon trying to locate their light colored brother. He touched noses with Pi in a sign of endearment. Theta stood on the other side and nosed his ear. If he still had tear ducts he might have cried. He missed these stallions.
“I took a bit of a tumble…” he muttered to the two. Theta and Sigma exchanged looked and let out a low chuckle between them. Pi chuckled with them, some of the stress of the fall melting away, “Im pretty sore.” he mentioned.
“It must have been some tumble, you look almost as purple as me.” Theta chided his blind brother. The three talked softly for a moment before Sigma explained that there was a band of Bataille stallions that were coming. He told Pi about the others like the boys that they had gotten to meet. Some were battle tested just like Scythe and others had seen horrors just like their small band.
Pi was introduced to five other stallions that night. Pike was a friendly black stallion that was the first to ask if Pi was ok. He reassured him that he would be fine. Hammer, a Nior stallion, kept his distance while listening to make sure nothing got out of hand. A silver smokey male named Cannon was the first to help Pi up from the ground. He let Pi stand against him until the bruised knees could hold him up. A large gray stallion swooped in as the second to help hold up the injured Pi. He introduced himself as Cutlass. Ransuer was the final stallion, a large glowing green male. He was friendly but seemed to keep himself out of the chaos while Pi was getting his balance.
He thanked everyone individually for helping him out in his time of need. The band was able to get him back home and into a safe stall. Pi apologized to the group for having to rescue his clumsy self. Not one of them made him feel less than the stallion he was. They all vowed that they would come visit him at a time when his bruises were all healed. He looked forward to getting to know those that decided to return.
Theta and Sigma stayed the night with their brother. Though he were not blood brothers, they were as close as if they were. They talked about what they went through together with the Mages of Durant, the escape the aftermath. Each of them had been lucky enough to find a human to befriend. The colts were thankful that they were free of the horrors that they once endured. The thoughts of keeping their bond alive allowed them all to sleep peacefully through the night.
