Just in time for some Christmas crafting here is my tutorial on how I make the glitter ball ornaments. If you would like to download a zip of the tutorial that is more computer friendly. Please go here: Download zip file .
I am giving away these techniques for free. I ask that you respect this and do not sell any of this in any way. That includes any ornaments you make using these techniques. Please kindly point people to where you got this tutorial. If you post something you made online I ask that you please link to where you got the tutorial. I am not requiring this but it would be nice.
If anything is unclear feel free to ask. I have had several people read over this, crafty and non-crafty alike but things may still not be perfect. I will do my best to answer all questions as best I can.
Thank you and Happy Holidays!
Edit: OMG A DD?! WHAT? REALLY?! WHAAAAT?!?! I can barely believe this! Thank you so much `maytel and ^PirateLotus-Stock just thank you! Aaahhh, omg, this is so unreal.

Hi! Would you mind if I created a video using your tutorial? I would give you credit and post it in the information box. Thx

After giving this a lot of thought I am going to have to say no. There is no good reason this tutorial should be turned into a video, the text and images are very clear. If I wanted a video version of my tutorial I would make it myself so that I could keep it to the standards I require for all things I attach my name to.

Thanks! I can't say I was the first person to come up with it but I did come up with my own techniques. Be sure to post some ornaments when you make your own! I love seeing what other people make.

I'm starting the process for these today~ Also gonna do a few with chalkboard paint on the outside, and my brother wants to do some with melted crayons swished around inside.

Exciting! The chalkboard ones have gotten so popular I see them premade in stores now XD I do not know what I would want to draw or write on one though so I haven't made any myself. I have also seen the crayon ones, be careful when making though, it seems to glass can get rather hot. I have also seen comments of people having them shatter, likely due to the glass heating too fast. They do many such pretty ornaments though. If I had time I might make some myself but I haven't even had a chance to glitter any of the ones I got this year.

I cleaned all 15 yesterday (We had 16, but one of the balls slipped out of my hands when I was wiping the outside and shattered and freaked out the poor dogs.) and today my brother and I did one crayon-one each. His looks like an orange creamsicle, and mine looks like a planet Earth, all green and blue swirls~ I'll be sure to get some pictures soon! I also got some small mustache-print tape that I want to try, and on one of the discs I want to try and make a corgi because we have two of 'em. I was thinking of setting aside 4 with little nubbies on them for each of our initials, or just a disc with an S on it for our last names. No clue what to do with the rest yet. I kinda want to try that white and gold one with the vines you did, but I have absolutely no confidence in my drawing skills even on flat paper, let alone an orb of glass...Maybe make a couple for my mom's mom, and/or my mom's sister's family, since we're visiting them after Christmas for the first time in years.
Oh no worries about me shattering them by getting them too hot, I'm a wimp when it comes to heat. I was wearing one of my dad's old firefighting gloves (The kind meant to withstand being in a burning building) and holding the ornament filled with crayon bits, and using a bare hand to hold the blow dryer. And even then I kept stopping before it got very warm. I'm a total wuss with heat, especially on my hands and face. I actually can't stand putting stuff in the oven and taking it out. >.<
So we have 5 balls, 6 with the little nubbies on the bottom, and 4 discs. Not much, but it's my first time doing this. This year was more for obtaining expensive-ish supplies. I actually never found that Martha Stewart glitter, between A.C. Moore and Michaels. But I got a few different types that are pretty fine, so I hope they work.

I always break some too. This year I broke nearly an entire box after I was getting ready to put them away after they had dried. They came crashing down all around me. It was quite awful and I am still upset with all the potential ornaments I have lots. I have been having fun putting stickers of on many of them. Not sure why the idea didn't come to me sooner but it sure makes pretty ornaments with less work. I have seen names and initials work well but I will admit, the best ones I have seen they used a programmable cutter so they just used some pretty fonts and then had the machine cut the names out of vinyl and then stuck them onto the ornaments with wonderful results. The vine and leaves was tedious but pretty easy. I didn't even draw it ahead of time just kind of painted with the glue the bit of vine and leaves I could fit on a "side" and then glittered and added more until it was covered. I just ended it when a leaf when there was no where else to go and split off another branch when I needed. It just took awhile to do. Confidence in your drawing skills is not needed. That is why I mentioned that the markets are erasable with some rubbing alcohol. Just draw what you can and then correct until you get something you like. Then you have a clear guide for adding a design on the outside. Also, the disks it is pretty easy to tape a stencil to, seeing as they are mostly flat, which is just impossible on the orbs.
Well glad you were safe! I felt most of the tutorials didn't have enough warnings. Firefighter gloves are amazing. I use one in place of an oven mitt. Much more effective and less likely to need replacing. Sounds like you got some nice results from the crayon ornaments. I hope you do post some photos soon. I would love to see.
Michael's is one of those stores that no matter how many of them you have been in they are all setup differently. My current one puts the MS glitter in a separate section from all other glitter its like the magical Martha Stewart section or something. I have been in others that have tons of fine glitter, not just MS branded, but my local ones does not. Any fine glitter will work it just happens that MS is usually the easiest to find for people.

Yay this tutorial was amazing! I used it to make Christmas gifts for my friends and family, though I wish I had taken a picture of them all before I started delivering them :I I didn't do anything fancy, just the first letter of everyone's names since this was my first time
But anyhoodles, I loved this! Thanks so much for sharing
(I actually favorited this a year or two ago, but I'm glad I actually tried it this year XD)

Awesome! Glad it was helpful to you. Personalized ornaments just with letters is a great way to start and I cannot image anyone not being happy to get one. Too bad you didn't take photos, I would have loved to see them. As you get more practice the more complicated things become easier and then you start wondering how far you can put the craziness. I hope to have time to make some ornaments for myself soon and I gave several very complicated plans. I expect to make quite a mess XD

Small question. Instead of the floor cleaner, would watered down Elmer's School glue work? I've used it before in paper mache' and it takes a while to dry, so it should be enough time to coat the ball and put glitter in, yeah? Just because I have a half bottle of the stuff left and want to save some money. If not, that's OK.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
cutekick In reply to krystalfan-2 [2014-12-04 02:50:04 +0000 UTC]
I tend to avoid Elmer's for things like this. It has a tendency to yellow after a month or two and not store well at all. There has been a new product released called Glitter It by Beacon. I have seen several other crafters swear by it for all things glitter and use it for this type of application and it appears to work just as well as the floor cleaner. I believe per ounce it is actually more expensive but since it comes in a much smaller bottle it is cheaper in the short term. Not to mention you can find it at your local craft store.

Ah, OK. Knowing my luck, the Glitter It won't be in my country. Canada is the worst to find any supplies for craft or art (cause all we have is Michaels or PM Hobbycraft). I'll take a look regardless.

I checked the Canadian Michaels site. They should have it, hopefully. And I did see Amazon have it, but I like to avoid getting supplies online. I'd rather see it in person so I have an idea of what condition it's in.

cutekick In reply to krystalfan-2 [2014-12-05 01:18:19 +0000 UTC]
Understandable. I end up buying random supplies online because they just do not carry it here, no matter where I look. I hate, hate buying fabric online but I am doing it more and more because all the best fabric is only sold online. Usually with Amazon you do not have to worry about condition and if something does come broken they are very good about sending a replacement.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
krystalfan-2 In reply to cutekick [2014-12-06 20:32:45 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I get that. That's probably the only time I'll order online (cause I don't know anyone who sells natural dyes in my city so I have to get it online).
I hear ya! There's no nice fabrics in store that I could use (unless its fleece for plushies). I did find someone on Etsy selling large amounts of scraps (100 or so in a baggy) for dirt cheap, so I may buy from there (you know, if you want to check it out). I don't think they're useless tiny bits. I think they're swatch sized, so it's good if you need a small-ish amount of fabric.
I haven't had issues with Amazon besides it being slow sometimes with shipping, so I may go ahead on turn to there if I absolutely must.

cutekick In reply to krystalfan-2 [2014-12-08 18:24:25 +0000 UTC]
I wish I had something to do with all my scraps. I have 2 huge boxes full of them. I use them for ears and such when that color is needed but I tend to create more than I can use.
I actually checked my local Michael's for the glitter glue but I could not find it. I also could not find an employee to ask but in their defense the store was packed and their credit card system was running slow. It took them a good 5 minutes just to charge my card. Hopefully you will have better luck than I did.
Amazon can be slow but well, that is what we get for not paying for shipping

Ugh, I know that feeling. I hate having scraps but I keep rummaging through my schools fabric scrap bins (three recycle containers-the kind you put in your drive way and they're tall) and taking what I like XD
Oooh, that sucks! Sorry to hear that! My guess is it's in the kids craft section or with the glitter supplies, near the clothes. But that's how the store was laid out last time I worked there so it could be completely different now. Hopefully an employee knows where it is (they seem to go through them often).
Yeah, true. Guess I shouldn't complain then!

I just need to come up with projects that use tons and tons of scraps I wish I had somewhere to get free fabric from XD
I checked both the kids craft glitter section, the "adult" glitter (totally just martha stewart), and the glue aisle with no luck. They may have been sold out, it is glitter season, or I just missed it. There were so many people in the store I could have missed it easily. With any luck next time I stop by it won't be so crowded and I can find someone to ask.

My cats are actually annoyingly picky. I have a bed for them but they do not like the towels it is stuffed with so maybe the fleece would be good enough for them. My sister gets chilblains so winters are always hard on her and she hates going out in the cold. I figured some handwarmers that she could toss in the microwave for a minute before she headed out would be a help with that. Tea cozies might work. I will have to look into that. I do not know how many layers of fleece I would need before there was adequet protections from the hot cup would be enough. Not to mention some fleece can be rather slippery so I would worry about people dropping their hot drinks.
Oh no! I recommend www.consumercrafts.com/ if you want to get some online. I bought cubes and egg shaped ones from them and they are very nice quality. A different brand than what Michael's sells but the quality is the same.

Oooh, those hand warmers would make a wonderful gift for your sister! I bet she'd really appreciate them a ton! (Unless you actually did that for the holidays, in which case I hope she liked them!)
I found some on amazon and they arrived really fast! They're only round, but they have various sizes. They're supposed to be translucent but they appear see through. I'm still waiting for the Glitter-It before I can begin (and I have to find something to pour the glitter and the rubbing alcohol into the ornaments). I will check out the site, though, in case this goes well and I want to make more over the summer.

One of them is impressively stuck up.
I actually haven't gotten to making them yet >.> Been so busy that I just have not had time. I will be getting to them soon though so I am not too worried about it.
Ah, Amazon. I have found that in the case of ornaments at least, Amazon doesn't have the best prices. Though, I admit I don't know if I have checked around the holiday season proper for them XD I recommend little funnels for getting everything in but you can make paper ones for the glitter at least. The rubbing alcohol you could just pour in carefully, it won't matter if you get some on the outside of the ornament since you want to clean that too. Just don't pour the extra back into the main bottle.
I have been happy with the site so far. Not super fast shipping or low priced free shipping like Amazon but still reasonable for a small company. Not to mention the prices on the ornaments are about that of Michael's "sale" prices (since everything appears to always be on "sale" in that store).

Ah, OK. But yeah, I totally get ya! It's been crazy for me, too, ever since October. Every weekend was booked up, so we've only had the past couple of days to actually relax!
Yeah, the prices were absolutely insane! But this one was about $30-ish bucks for twenty ornaments, and it seems the guys customers were all very pleased with him, and I can see why! Fast shipping, plenty of bubble wrap, nothing arrived broken. I wanted funnels since it would make life easier, but yeah, paper will do.
I did check the store. Seems it only ships in America :C Well, they do ship to Canada, but you have to phone them to get quotes and I despise talking on the phone. I think I'll have to just keep an eye out for cheap items on sites (now is probably a good time) or start bulb hunting after Halloween....or before XD

I know what you mean! I finally have some free time now for some other projects. I was so busy for so many months. I might actually get to take my birthday off work
That isn't too bad for the price, and it seems like he took his time with packaging them up so they wouldn't break which is really good.
Ah, sorry. I keep forgetting you are in Canada. I hate talking on the phone myself. That is weird they will only take the order on the phone. Must be some old styled system left over from before everything was online. I usually get my ornaments right before/right after Halloween. Within that week, depending on when Halloween falls. They are going to have just been put out and it is long before the stores start running out (which seems to happen once Thanksgiving hits). Since I go through so many each year I want to make sure I have plenty for all the gifts to everyone.

Yay! What a nice way to spend your birthday! Mine's going to be on a Friday but I have class that day D:
Yeah, he was super careful about it. Which was annoying cause he used packing tape to keep the bubble wrap around the ornaments XD
That's OK. I assume most people are American myself cause I use American sites (the only Canadian one I use is Amazon.ca), which makes sense. But yeah, must be an old way or something, since I've seen a few sites do that as well. Oh well, nothing I can do about that!
But yeah, I'll have to check right around Halloween, since they have the inflatables and lights out half way through October and most Christmas stuff out right before Remembrance Day (which I find disrespectful but that's corporate for ya), so I should be golden then.

The luck of us after xmas and before new years kids is we never had school on our birthday. The problem is everyone is usually too bust with the holiday to remember our untimely birthday. Sometimes I think I would have preferred to have class on my birthday
Well, better safe than sorry in the case of glass. I would rather someone be annoying careful than so carefree things end up broken.
It is crazy how early they have Christmas stuff out now. I kind of wish it wasn't that way. Christmas can take all of December but please no more. Too much holiday otherwise.

One of my Aunt's is born Christmas Day (and she was going to be named Holly Hawkes but that would have been too much). When my step-dad phones her, he wishes her a Happy Birthday first, Merry Christmas second. Class on one's birthday can be fine...except no one would wish me a happy birthday and in one class, I didn't get anything from the teacher but everyone else did ;-; So I'd rather have it on a weekend or something cause I know I'll be wished a Happy Birthday then.
Yeah, true. Except two of them broke when I was working on them! One didn't even fall a foot from the ground and I patted the other one a little too forcefully (if the glitter co-operated then it wouldn't have broke!). Ah well.
Yeah, it really spoils my mood when I see Thanksgiving, Halloween and Christmas all at once. At least wait until Remembrance Day is over. Sheesh!

cutekick In reply to krystalfan-2 [2015-01-04 22:46:47 +0000 UTC]
That really would have been too much! Ah, that is unfortunate. I never had many teacher who paid attention to birthdays so that never really came up. Well, hopefully your birthday will/was still a good one even with class.
Oh, I break a few each year. This year I broke nearly and entire drying box full of them. I even broke one of the cubes when I pulling it out the packaging. It just shattered in my hand. I was lucky and didn't get cut but I was really careful with the rest of them.
Around here we don't really get all at once. Mid october Halloween is shoved into a corner that is hard to find (aside from the candy) and Christmas comes out. I know Thanksgiving is a different time in Canada but really, you think we would try and have some celebration for the Thanksgiving inbetween Halloween and Christmas. And once Halloween has past (and sometimes even before) the Halloween Candy gets magically converted to Christmas candy.

I think last year I had the day off from class, so I slept in and my and my mom ordered a Valentines Pizza from Pizza 73, so it wasn't the worst birthday I ever had.
Oh no! That sounds horrible! I'm glad you're not hurt.
That's lucky! Having all the fall and winter holidays out at once really kills any festive mood I'm in (well....except for Halloween cause I still enjoy it regardless), though it's usually like that at big brand chain stores. Small mom and pop stores don't really do that I find, which I'm glad about. And, of course, once Christmas is over and all the sales are done, spring and summer toys come out, despite the weather still being cold and snowy/rainy.

That sounds like a pretty good day to me.
Our sales continue a few days through the new year though this is really to let the stores keep more money. Since they get so many returns after the holidays they only have to give the current value of the item, not what it was bought for (unless you have a receipt with the bought price). So really our after Christmas sales are many times even better than our holiday sales.

Hey, I know you said you didn't want people selling ornaments they made using these techniques, I very much respect that. I'm planning on making these for my family and friends this year, but I would like to practice first and I thought that offering a few of them to my followers would allow me to practice and give them gifts as well. I wouldn't be selling them or making a profit, but I would be offering them on here and I just wanted to make sure that was okay before making a journal about it.
Let me know! I certainly don't want to violate your request, and that is why I'm asking. I don't plan to make profit from these ever, I'm just looking for a generous way to practice. <3
