Description "Ey' lil' Domobird, fancy that birdy boiler yet?" Banzai jeered, baring his long teeth as he leaned down to taunt poor Zazu. The hornbill ruffled his feathers and glared viciously at the hyena, still sore from the last time he'd been 'boiled'. "Now see here - "

"I'm gonna make a sandwich outta you" interrupted Banzai, taking a step forward and snapping at the bird.

"Don't you dare". A snarl erupted from Sarabi, who leapt forward and stood protectively over her Majaordomo. The Queen had had just about enough of Scar and his evil cronies, and wasn't going to stand idly by and watch an old friend get bullied by a stinking, rotten hyena.

"It won't be long before you're a sandwich too, lion" Banzai threatened; he was far too reckless when Shenzi wasn't around. Zazu puffed out his chest and spread his wings protectively in front of Sarabi, determined to make up for his cowardly reaction when the hyenas had threatened dear Simba and Nala all those years ago - he wasn't going to let his Queen down too.

"You'll be dead before your paw makes contact..."

---------------------------------------------

I always noticed that Banzai was the reckless, impatient one. Sarabi put up with so much shit, she must have blown up at some point; plus we never see her get vicious. We see her angry, yes, but never vicious, so I wanted to depict that.

Yes, I did reference pictures of Zazu and Banzai; they are so hard to draw. No, I didn't trace them. Don't even start with that crap.

As always, this work is not to be re-uploaded, stolen, traced, edited, used as a base or used commercially; don't do anything with it without my expressed permission.

Sarabi, Banzai and Zazu are © Disney

This artwork belongs to me. Don't be thieving little shit - I will find out >.>

Despite Sarabi's gentle, kindhearted, and supportive nature, something inside of Sarabi has been unleashed. Something snapped.

I would be surprised if Sarabi never got vicious considering she's a lion and lions will get vicious at some point in their life.

I thought so too. She's always portrayed as being so gentle, but I like to think she could pack a nasty bite if she wanted to.

Well, even the gentlest creatures can become dangerous under certain circumstances.

Very nice work - I could almost mistake it for a scene from the movie. I don't know about Sarabi's legs though. The front legs seem a little short. The shading could use some work as well, as it looks a little too fuzzy. I don't know if you used the burn tool for it, but the really dark areas don't quite fit. It looks like they were just airbrushed on. Other than that, it's a very beautiful picture!

Thanks for the comment; I use the multiply layer tool for my shading as I feel burn makes it look too flat and uneven (if, for example, you accidentally go over the same place twice). As for the anatomy, it is one of my points for improvement (notice the thick neck and odd mouth placement too) - so it has been noted :3

You're welcome! For the shading, use a harder shape - it can be easy to overfeather it. Me, I tend to just shade on the same layer like I'm making an oil painting. Multiply usually looks a little odd to me, though it could be the programs I am using.

Well I use photoshop so the multiply looks good on it, but some programs like Sai make it look unusually bright. I'm still learning to be honest, this improvement was only recent xD my aims are anatomy first, then originality (as well as making the poses 'interesting') and of course backgrounds ~

Backgrounds can be a pain for me. I'm still working on making them look good, and looking back, that awesome picture I did of two blue and gold macaws preening each other does cry for improvement. I really should remember my password for ConceptArt and submit more stuff for crits there. Deviantart does have a better interface though. I just like how there are a variety of art websites, including ones that are made for professional artists. Ever tried out ConceptArt?

I haven't even heard of it, is it specifically for critiques or..? Backgrounds are probably my worst part of the process, but I'd rather get the characters down first and then move onto the "bigger picture". It's always great to look at old work which at the time seemed good, and then realise how much you've improved. Sufficed to say I've come on in leaps and bounds since I first started ~

That was your old account? You really made a lot of improvements! And ConceptArt.org is basically a deviantart for artists who want critiques, and who want to build portfolios. I've posted there a few times and the people on that site are cool. If you really want some awesome critiques, post some art over there.

Under a different alias, I once uploaded an ink and watercolour picture of an anthro cat dressed suspiciously like Aeon Flux. Got some really good advice, like a comment saying it looked 'flyswatted'. It opened my eyes on a lot of different things. And well, I got the term 'sacks of goo' from a critique given to me by someone I used to chat with a lot. She and I drifted apart, but some of her is still with me because she was one of the people who taught me to appreciate and listen to critiques.

Yeah, that was my old account; sometimes it makes me cringe, and other times it makes me smile. That sounds like a really interesting website, I may have to check it out! Personally I find critiques very helpful as reflection is a biggie for me, but sometimes they are just not welcome, in which case I'd state it in the artist's description. I used to make up all sorts of excuses when people would critique me on my old account; I guess a lot changes in all those years, attitude and art ^^

Ratchet Video Weekly is a very interesting Youtube channel where a guy shows people in cringe-worthy situations where they are often looking or acting stupid.

Oh, and my old art... my old, old art from a decade ago... that makes me cringe. I used to make excuses too. Then I got bullied for being a stupid fuckhead and learned a lot of important things, like the difference between harassment and critique, and how it was not a good idea to defend a so-called friend who was acting like a jerk in the forums and deserving the treatment she got. I mean... she had gotten pu-sama into trouble, and I helped her.

Does he ask the artist's permission first? That is my only thing; if the artist is fine with it then awesome, but I personally wouldn't be okay with someone randomly using my work as an example of cringe if they hadn't asked me first -if they ask, I am always happy to say yes as let's be honest a lot of my old stuff sucks, but it's a matter of respect in asking first, you know?

As for poor behaviour on the site, if I see it I certainly don't condone it, especially as I used to be 'that person'. I notice that attitude tends to improve with age, which at least gives me some hope for a few members I've come across whose behaviour could use polishing.

I see. Um, Phil, who hosts Ratchet Video Weekly, doesn't ask permission that I know of to use videos of silly, stupid behaviour in his series. He's never gotten in trouble for it, but honestly, I wouldn't want to shut down a guy who uploads videos of people getting exposed for doing stuff like being racists or acting juvenile.

And as for "How NOT to Draw," I would often explain what makes the picture look so wrong. In a couple issues, I commented on some pictures that were eye-rapingly bad. Imagine the Teen Titans in large, swollen diapers. (those got taken down). I do tend to get snarky, but I did the "How NOT to Draw" series to have fun and teach people about the various mistakes artists make.

That's true. I wish that DeviantArt would be more like ConceptArt, because the people are more civil and most don't throw shit-fits over being critiqued, and the art quality is higher over there.

Oh hell no, if someone is being racist/homophobic/sexist/ableist/classist etc then by all means call them out on their shit, I was referring more to the art than the behaviour. I can't seem to find your videos - do you have a link? Maybe you should do a 'how to critique' video so people might learn how to say things with a little more tact, I think a lot of users would benefit from it xD

sanjouin-dacapo In reply to Cwenthryth [2015-06-16 23:16:52 +0000 UTC]

Oh no I don't make the Ratchet Video Weekly series, but I love watching it - just search for it on youtube. A guy named Phil makes the Ratchet Video Weekly series.

But yeah, sometimes I will search for art, and if I think it looks cringeworthy enough, I might put it in "How NOT To Draw". Haven't been doing that lately, what with school and ebay. It started out when some asshole was harassing one of my friends, and I linked to his traced pictures in my journal. I might make a 'How To Critique' video or just do a journal about it. Generally, I don't put a badly-done picture into "How NOT to Draw" unless it's something it's either "goggles do nothing" horrible or looks like it was done by a child but was actually done by an adult. I know that young teens love putting up their fanart and stuff, and adults like to upload stuff done by their kids (bluepuppy is one example), but if I see, for example, a picture that looks like it was done by a child but features lots of bloody violence, it does get kinda creepy. Some kids do draw pictures of violence and killing, but that's usually if they have gone through some horrible shit like physical and sexual abuse.

Also, there was a young woman who was tracing screenshots, and it was incredibly obvious. She was in her early twenties and pregnant at the time, and throwing bitch-fits over someone calling her out on her tracing - in the forums of all places. I went to her page and started critiquing her pics, and a couple of times got some notes that were riddled with misspelled words, bad grammar, profanity, and all-caps. Then, she got someone banned for a stupid reason, and I started yelling at her on AIM for that. Also tag-teamed her with a friend on her oekaki board because I really hate it when people upload traced art as their own work and keep lying about it. This was almost a decade ago though. These days, she's keeping a low profile and hopefully has learned to not steal art.

I also a couple years back got a note from someone that I think might be the infamous Kimberleigh Ann Keister, because whoever was writing the note kinda used KAK grammar and her writing style. If you wanna read more on KAK, google her and cringe. She stole art and stalked an underaged fan-artist back before the turn of the century, and accused people of stealing her art. She's the only one in history to ever be permanently banned from VCL.

Unfortunately, KAK is back in force. She has now moved on to a new industry, the animal welfare industry, and has been cyber bullying and also stalking animal control officers since at least 2010.  She creates fake profiles in which she slanders officers. The fake profile always depicts her as an animal control officer herself, either male or female.  She used Amie Broom as a fake profile and also Grant Spencer. When she stalks particular male officers, she sends them pictures of herself in lingerie, which is a very disturbing sight, as can all imagine. Various incident reports have been filed with PD. She will also send out hate mail to various animal control supervisor to complain about particular officers, this time posing as a genuine concerned citizen.

I had a feeling about that. I mean, I think she went through my deviantart journal just to find that entry about her... or maybe she googled it. The misspellings she used kinda smacked of KAK. So I wrote another entry, poking fun at her for being 'totally not obsessed with KAK' - so totally NOT obsessed that she had to write me a note about it with a profile that had no art uploaded or nothing. Very suspicious. She don't learn, do she?

Amazing!

I think the reason why Sarabi never got violent before Scar admitted he killed Mufasa is because it was her late husbands brother. So she tried not to disrespect him, he was royal by blood too. She could have left the pridelands but she was still seen as the lionesses queen.

I completely agree; she seems very in touch with etiquette and is polite enough to him even when he's rude and irrational. I just wish we'd seen her as angry as we get to see Nala/Zira, y'know? I'd love to see her tear into the hyenas, I really would xD
