personally I would say Xellos is my fave male character ever but I am a fan of Lina (Like I said though your oppinion of her doesnt effect how I feel about her) Amelia is also awesome (Her insane justice girl-ness... it's pure win)

To tell the truth, I don't like Lina, either. I find she's overrated.
However, it's a sin in Slayers fandom that certan characters (Lina, Xelloss and Zel) are very popular, as the other half (Amelia, Gourry and Sylfield) are despised.
It isn't the characters' fault, but fans'.

Maybe it's the question of charisma, but Lina's certainly overrated (or that's just me who's sick of trying-to-look-psychotic-and-thinking-it's-cool girls with issues

I think the same; but I also find her she's a clear sample of "Son Gokuh Syndrome".
Perhaps part of the problem is severe lack of strong female characters in Japanese animes... but any of Slayers female casts is a more developed character than Lina.

i totally agree, the female anime characters are either weak or such of low-quality cliches it hurt. well, eastern society always put men over women, maybe that's why.

Indeed. That would explain why Lina is so popular, at least among Japanese fans. And since western fans are too tired of seeing useless or just weak female characters, Lina is a change. However, even Sylfild, being as sweet as she's, is braver than Lina.
Hmmm? It's a fan term based on Son Goku, the main character of "DragonBall", one of the most popular animes ever. Son Goku happens to be a plain simple character that always wins, no matter how; and he's surrounded of an eclectic collection of secondary characters that are more interesting than him, but never get any glory. You know: typical shonen mangas. Due that fact, fans developed that term, meaning any "blah character that becomes an hero" or just the same circunstances than Goku's.
