I REALLY wish they had stuck with this design for Star Trek vessels. Carrying along one'sΒ own stargate makes a lot more sense for anΒ FTLΒ driveΒ than deploying two oblong electromagnets on antimatter steroids.

Now that all depends. Warp drive nacelles are essentially subspace solenoids. IIRC the idea was that the Vulcans were essentially "showing off", demonstrating that they were able to make giant warp coils of very high efficiency rather than having to rely on a series of much smaller, easier to manufacture coils. But the ringship designs have always been a great favourite of mine, and the Surak ships are amongst my favourite Trek ship designs of all.
