Description
Head close up of a Hummingbird Hawk Moth (Macroglossum stellatarum).A substantial crop and not the sharpest picture in the World but i thought others may like to see it.

I'm surprised by how much like a hummingbird it actually looks. It must be the color scheme and proboscis.

I think they are probably more prevalent along the east of the country.

It's a Moth so an Insect, have a look at -> Hummingbird Hawk Moth 2 <- to see a full shot of one to give you a better idea of what they look like.

Thanks, i used a EF 100 F2.8 USM Macro, find it ideal for this type of shot, pretty fast lens.

They are pretty fascinating first time i saw one was 3 or 4 years ago and i wondered what on earth it was, only saw a couple up until last year when i started getting one as a regular visitor and was determined to get some photos, this one was from this years spring before all the rain.

Maybe the best close-up I have seen of a Hawk Moth. They are VERY hard to shoot and you've done very well in this shot. Excellent sharpness (in my opinion), coulours and light.
